Artist : Violence

Label : Visage Musique

erlebnis / LP

When Ottawa's Violence released their debut ep last March, we declared them our spirit animal. Since it was one of our favourite ep from 2013, it's understandable that the arrival of their 1st full-length has turned our January blues into some happy dancing. The record's sound continues in the same vein as their previous release: artfully executed synth-pop with the exact dark flavour that we love. This is more proof that Visage Musique works with the best bands. The title is a German philosophical term for experience, and that's exactly what you should do with this record. Bring it with you as you go about, play it in all kinds of situations, really experience it. Retro-futuristic synth-laden complex electronic pop produced by Xavier Paradis (aka Automelodi) and limited to 250 copies..

Artist : Violence

Label : Visage Musique

untitled / 12"

Montreal's Visage Musique can seemingly do no wrong. Rarely do they add a new band to their roster, so it's a momentous occasion when they do. It's thrilling to discover a new act as good and fully formed as Violence, and it should be no surprise that Visage did the unearthing. Ottawa outfit Violence's beautiful take on minimal synth music expertly leads you through a range of emotions. It's equally appropriate for when being bombarded by snow as it is for sunny afternoons spent in the park. People will break up at the beginning of one song, then start making out at the chorus. That isn't to say the band is confused about what they're trying to do—this is a decidedly confident debut ep. These are masterfully arranged and intricate synth-pop songs that evoke goths dancing to Deux in a 80's Parisian basement, while simultaneously sounding utterly timeless.. Repress on black vinyl limited to 200 copies !

le théâtre

Artist : Violence

Label : Visage Musique

le théâtre / 12"

It's here! We break out our happy dances every time we get our hands on something new from Violence Musique. No surprises here: their new ep is excellent. We've already shared our love of the 1st 2 singles on this ep ("L'Invention Du Divertissement" and "Shaking Pictograms"), and they slot right in with the rest of the adventurous, slick songs on the ep. There's a lot of mostly instrumental songs to get lost in, like the decidedly space-y "Héliogabale" or "Gap Junctions", which brings back memories of high school biology (gap junctions are the passageways between animal cells that transport things back and forth). Actually, the latter could work really well as the soundtrack for colourful and crazy science animations. And then there's "Mycroft Mixeudeim", which has distant vocals that sound like they're coming from a low-volume megaphone, a great synth jab and the same style that defines the rest of the ep: quick forward motion, call-and-response between different synth tones and some seriously infectious melodies. Tip !!

Artist : Violence Conjugale

Label : Born Bad

untitled / LP

This is the debut release on Born Bad Records from Belgian synth-wave act Violence Conjugale. Hans & André met early in highschool. Their mutual love for Bowie and Kenneth Anger pushed them to flunk school and smoke in their tiny school movie room. There they dream of an ideal future, made of space travel and industrial music. Feeling the pressure from this private institution, they eventually decide to go to Berlin and see what taste has decadence there. They meet Marianne Katza, an eccentric woman who tells them to come to an artist squat in the Mitte district. Just like Warhol's Factory, the place is an indistinct magma of ideas, music and drugs. Here, as André begins to fiddle with a Korg MS20 synth and dreams of exquisite performances, in another room, Hans tries to write his wildest nightmares to exorcise them. Marianne decides to introduce the future band to one of her lovers: Marc Berron, a young, arrogant and rich kid blessed with a perfect ear. He helps them to slow down their drug issues and take a new direction: to play a cold and personal music in pop format but with a feeling of urgency which characterized young Berliners. So, he kidnaps them in his own studio for several weeks to experiment, eventually finding Violence Conjugale's definitive sound: 80's minimal synth-wave, the frostiest ever...!

vices et mensonges

Artist : Violence Conjugale

Label : Teenage Menopause Records

vices et mensonges / LP

Violence Conjugale is back after 4 years of almost vinyl silence vinyl. Almost because we should not forget the small gift for Xmas 2014 'In The Depths' which will set the tone of 'Vices Et Mensonges'. Less minimalist, but darker. 'Vices Et Mensonges' talks about all these grave diggers of hope, the counterfeiters, the organized but granted lie.. The 1st track "ACABM" show clearly its hand. A pessimistic view but sadly realistic too. 11 pieces reporting a decline totalitarianism in all its forms, declared or insidious. 11 songs that speak of the violence of life, intimate or collective. However a survival instinct remain among this. Amputated but not dead yet. As evidenced by the music structured around harsh rythm boxes, more elaborate than previously. The synthetic composition is far less minimalist too. No more kraut accents like in their 1st album. However be careful, Violence Conjugale do not stray from its line.. Here, it's uptempo, it turns, it's more dancing. As carried in a spiral. We are short-winded. A warmer synthetic frame but with darker voice. Cynicism at its best ;)

time is the traitor

Artist : Violet Tremors

Label : VT Records

time is the traitor / LP

Violet Tremors are an anomalous oscillation on the Seismometer. Jessica White & Lorene Simpson have been friends ever since they met as co-workers at Erotic Cabaret in Houston, selling sex-toys decades ago. Today they continue to create pleasurable vibrations of the musical variety. Based in Los Angeles, Jessica & Lorene currently work in multimedia art, photo, film, fashion and music. These 2 bring their love of the visual arts to their live shows. Really cool debut album ;)

...if I die, I die

Artist : Virgin Prunes

Label : Rough Trade

...if I die, I die / LP

The Virgin Prunes was an Irish gothic rock band formed in 1977 and disbanded in 1986. In november 1982, the band released this debut album which became soon a classic. The atmosphere here is gloomy & sick with harsh vocals and bloody guitars… For connoisseurs only !

hearts and knives

Artist : Visage

Label : Pylon Records

hearts and knives / LP

Founding fathers of the new romantics and pioneers of the 80's sound Visage, return with a new album 'Hearts And Knives'. "It has been 29 years since the last Visage album and during that period it often seems like we have all lived through several lifetimes" comments Steve Strange, the bands creative force and flamboyant leader singer. The sound of 'Hearts And Knives' is classic Visage but with modern songs and style. There is the odd tip of the hat to modern production values but the sound is 1980-1982 Visage. It's vintage keyboards and synthesizers all the way. There's not software synths on this record! Many tracks are instantly recognizable as Visage. This album may have been a long time in coming but it is a purposeful statement of just where Steve Strange and Visage are at present. The past has been full of highs and lows but musically & creatively they are at a point where they can confidently present an album containing all the strands of their unique mix of music, fashion and style.

nice to meet insanity

Artist : Vision Factory

Label : NLW

nice to meet insanity / LP

Vision Factory was a late 80's solo project of musician Gregor Pichotka from the 'Ruhrpott' area of Germany, which released the heavily sought after 7" 'Bird From Fez / Tremendous Mates' in 1990. The song "Tremendous Mates" was also presented on the 1st 'Abby' CD compilation and became a small club hit. The music is influenced by acts like early The Klinik, Transparent Illusion, Throbbing Gristle and Die Form and can also be compared a bit to acts like File Not Found, Silent Signals and Nejet Nok. All songs are recorded between 1986 & 1989 and yet unreleased. The remastering of the original audiotapes was done by Matthias Schuster (Bal Pare, Im Namen des Volkes...). This record is a 2012-must-have for all fans of minimal-electro (even with some industrial influences) ;)

bird from fez / 7"

In a creepy vault we explored a few original pressings of this minimal electro classic from 1990, which is really scarce and expensive. The records are from the original pressing and unplayed, the cover is a reprint of the original artwork. So order quickly, if you want to get this rare masterpiece for a fair price..

Artist : Visonia

Label : Last Known Trajectory

opal's sunflowers / 2x12"

Chile's Nicolas Estany is back with another album of sublime darkwave electro following 2014's fabulous 'Impossible Romance'. There are all the hallmarks of Visonia's singular sound that are on offer once again, from the energetic devil's dance of the opening track "Beyond The Clouds" or the aptly titled "Melancholy" through to brooding gothic slow jams such as "The Owl" and title track "Opal's Sunflowers". All featuring the most razor sharp of arpeggios, haunting Carpenter-esque strings and truly epic vocal performances throughout. Limited pressing on dark blue marbled vinyl in in deluxe full colour picture sleeve.. It's all quite brilliant really !

die reisen

Artist : Visonia et Dopplereffekt

Label : Last Known Trajectory

die reisen / 12"

Jaw-dropping electro-pop debut from Chilean producer Nicolas Estany aka Visonia, including a stunning hook-up with Dopplereffekt. Boding very well for his imminent debut album, 'Impossible Romance', this single introduces a full fledged new artist paying dues to his influences: Depeche Mode, Detroit electro, classic synth-pop) with incredibly fine-tuned finesse and respect. Alongside Dopplereffekt on "Die Reisen" he plays out a beautifully poised and ice-cool electro-noir waltz that's just left us for 6, whilst flipside yields 2 solo productions: the sublime melancholy and palatial grandeur of "Antarctic Love" and the almost-too-perfect DM vibes of "Impossible Romance". Unmissable limited transparent vinyl !!

against the rule

Artist : Vita Noctis

Label : Dark Entries

against the rule / 2x12"

Vita Noctis were a trio formed in 1983 in Vilvoorde (Belgium), and inspired by the post-punk movement. More "arthouse" than "goth", Vita Noctis blend the sneering attitude of punk with the spartan structures of minimal electronics. The band had more in common with the early electronic Sheffield scene of Cabaret Voltaire, Vice Versa or early Human League than their Belgian contemporaries. Urgent vocals go from a whisper to a scream in seconds and sound restless, bored and irritated all at once. Fuzzy guitar, simple baselines and crude electronics take turns accompanying the dynamic vocal styling. While lyrics tackle weighty topics like death and religion, the landscape they paint is a playfully bratty as it is grim. Each double LP comes in a gatefold jacket with cover art. Spanning 3 years and 4 recording sessions 'Against The Rule' is the soundtrack to Armageddon, very fitting in the contemporary climate of dissatisfaction and social upheavel. Beware, this is abrasive, primal music made by irritated teenagers full of angst !!

aller simple

Artist : Vitor Hublot

Label : Psoria Discs

aller simple / 12"

Ultrarare minimal synth record from 1983. At the begining Vitor Hublot was a duo composed by Guy Clerbois & Guy Delhalle and coming from Soignies (Belgium). Victor Hublot became Vitor Hublot thanks to a mistake made by the graphist on their 1st concert poster in 1980. Despite a different approach of music they produced their 1st 12" (with guest singer Chantal Talbot) in 1983 by themselves on their Psoria Discs label. 'Aller Simple' remain a cult record for purists of early minimal crazy synth-pop.. Mint original copies. Be fast on this Must-Have !

To keep the spirit of real folk parties, each track is interpretated by a different singer and his version of 'La P'Tite Gayole' gave him recognition in the Belgian musical scene. Very rare mint original copies. Be fast on this Must-Have !

cuadro sinóptico

Artist : Vocoder

Label : Dark Entries

cuadro sinóptico / 12"

A 4-song compilation from one of the finest groups of the Spanish new-wave/techno-pop scene of the 80's: Vocoder. Keyboardists Antonio Laval, Alfonso Olarte, Antonio Tenas met while attending university, and were later joined by vocalist Pilar Pellicer. They recorded several demos with synthesizers, sequencers and drum machines, creating a soundtrack for the clubs and dancefloors. After sending demos to various record companies, they signed a deal with Aviador Dro's sublabel Neón Danza and released 2 ep's, 'What Happens Now / Radio' in 1984, "Mindanao / Amor de Robot' in 1985 and a self-titled lp which was produced by Michel Huygen (Neuronium) in 1987. 'Cuadro Sinóptico' compiles both 2-song 12" maxi singles as one 4-song ep. All 4 songs were recorded during 1984-85 using the most advanced and sophisticated techniques of time in digital recording and Direct Metal Mastering (DMM). Genuinely catchy, Vocoder combined soaring melodies with cybernetic coldness. A futuristic sound for the modern age topped with Pilar's charismatic vocals. Lyrically they address robotic love, disco dancing, and the tropical island of Mindanao, and sing in Spanish, English and French. Each LP includes a double-sided insert with photos, lyrics and liner notes by Flemming Dalum, a Danish Dj who introduced much of the world to Vocoder in 2008 on his 'French Spanish Italo Connection' mix. Vocoder want you to barricade yourself in the discotheques and dance away the depression !!!

Artist : Vogue

Label : Anna Logue Records

sahara / 12"

Vogue was formed by American musician and multi-instrumentalist Aret Madilian, back then equipping himself with Moog and Roland synthesisers, plus a Boss DR-55 and a piano, and recording two of those ultimate dark minimal synth hits, "Sahara" and "Shattered Peace", think of Das Kabinette, Those Attractive Magnets, Inertia, Ceramic Hello, just to name a few. Aret added Julie Kubat (vocals and lyrics) and Teresa Kubat (vocals) to the line-up and self-released both tracks on their sole release, the "Sahara" 12" in 1983 (Aret Records, Ar 42266). Ultra rare and very expensive in its original form, Anna Logue Records now offers this gem for small money, with a beautifully remixed artwork, and carefully remastered. Dark analogue synth bliss, not to be missed! Limited edition of 325 copies on 140gr black vinyl, printed on the brown reversed side of the board (SUS), remastered by Martin Bowes (Attrition, The Cage Studios), artwork remixed by Steve Lippert. Tip !!

in 20 years

Artist : Void Vision

Label : Blind Prophet Records

in 20 years / 7"

This is the debut release by USA based synth band Void Vision. In a way the sound of Void Vision is typical for the new American wave of synth acts like Martial Canterel and Xeno & Oaklander but due to a more poppy touch and some excellent song writing this band is able to set themselves apart. A very nice debut release for sure that will please both fans of more cold wave sounds as synthpop addicts. Limited edition of 500 numbered copies..

sub rosa

Artist : Void Vision

Label : Mannequin

sub rosa / LP

Void Vision is a Philadelphia-based electronic project helmed by Shari Vari. Shari Vari formed Void Vision in 2009 originally as a duo, during the explosion of the new minimal synth and coldwave scene in United States. Sharing the same scene of the Wierd Records associates like Led Er Est, Martial Canterel, Xeno & Oaklander, Automelodi, in 2010 VV released 'In Twenty Years' on Blind Prophet (Sean Ragon's Cult Of Youth record label), receiving also the attention of the Rough Trade dudes, who asked to put out a track for one of their synth wave compilations. After other split vinyls, tapes and compilations, Mannequin approached Shari with the intention to continue what Wierd Records started, giving a proper shape to her beautiful and youthful dark electronic sound. The result is 10 hypnotic cold analog tracks dominated by the warm and fragile Shari's voice, some more "pop orientated" some others belonging to the original "cold wave" atmosphere. 'Sub Rosa' is an edition of 400 copies on 160gr black vinyl !

silent howl

Artist : Volkova

Label : Tacuara Records

silent howl / 12"

After their debut album 'Confusion Is A Good Weapon' released in mid 2013 and catalogued as one of the breakthrough recordings of the year, Vólkova begins 2014 presenting 'Silent Howl', a limited edition of 300 units in vinyl format. The record includes a password to download all the tracks plus some remixes and live recordings. Following the same line as the 1st album, but with a stronger sound, 'Silent Howl' faces 2 genres that confirm their post-industrial and coldwave influences (like the version of Monte Cazazzas's "Birds Of Prey"). Also, the album goes beyond the genres mentioned before. This vinyl edition of 'Silent Howl' incorporates the song "Pulsion", which serves as Volkova's 2nd video clip. "Pulsion" transmits certain landscape's rusticity and apathy, a metaphor of the different moods we sometimes succumb to. It manages to counterpose to such utopian aspirations that move us, and help keep active against the never ending search for that which we desire, that which we exteriorize through music, and the arts in general.

Artist : Voxzema

Label : Domestica

untitled / 10"

Appeared from the alternative Italian stage in the late 80's, Voxzema is one of the most unknown and peculiar bands in the european underground music scene. Despite not having launched any record before its early breakup, they did give a few concerts and, with some luck, you will be able to find 2 of their demos in the strange compilation in cassette format 'Ologenesi' from 1989. Thanks to an exhausting work of musical archaeology, Domestica found their original members and rescued their demos, most of them totally unpublished up to now. With a totally innovative sound, Voxzema is a mixture of electronic/coldwave with psychedelic touches, blunt bases and a deep male voice which may evoke a hybrid between Cassandra Complex and Kas Product, to name some of them... perhaps we're talking about 'cyberpunk'...? Judge yourself! Edition of 250 copies. Presented in a handmade silk-screened sleeve, here in gold version printed on a black textured sleeve (nº 175 to 250) !

the man from colours

Artist : Wanexa

Label : Dark Entries

the man from colours / 12"

Gianluigi 'Gigi' Farina and Francesco Rago are to be counted among italo-disco's true originators. Operating as a duo under many monikers, they brought us masterpieces such as Wanexa's "The Man From Colours", ‘Lectric Workers "Robot Is Systematic", and Decadance's "On And On". Their sound is propulsive and ethereal in equal measure; dense, psychedelic, and tinged with melancholy. "The Man From Colours" was recorded in Milan in 1982 and released on Discomagic Records the same year. The song's music was composed by Rago and Farina, with lyrics written by Xenia Monneret who was only 16 at the time. Mournful synth pads are buoyed by an 808 groove, while Lyana Galis provides haunting vocals, singing of a man who will bring color to this grey world. "The Man From Colours" was influential on early house and techno music thanks to support from WBMX in Chicago and and WJLB in Detroit. It was later a cornerstone in the 90's Hague electro scene, frequently appearing in Dj sets by I-f and Intergalactic Gary. On the B-side is the instrumental version with extended breaks, drum claps and additional vocoder verses. There is a slight warble in the beginning of each version that was due to the band re-recording multiple takes on the same reel of tape. The record comes housed in a newly designed die-cut jacket by Eloise Leigh, updating the pink and green color scheme of the original Discomagic Records label. Each copy includes a double-sided postcard insert with lyrics, notes, and a never seen before photo from a fashion show.

regeneration / LP

'Regeneration' Weird Candles debut LP was made in frenzy of excitment begining with the tracks "Regeneration" and "Science". They had found their sound through months of co-producing and writing together, traditionaly with Blag begining with drum beats and lead synth, and katerwol on the bass synth and vocals. They drew inspiration from 80's industrial, and darkwave, as well as from playing with admired locals like //zoo, Koban and Animal Bodies. Katerwols lyrics are dark and abrasive, and are delivered through sharp rythmic bursts, rather than sung. He tells a story through his words, an intimate reveal of his own personal deaths and rebirths, ups and downs, it's a story of hardship, tragic love, and of ongoing mental turbulence in relation to the world around him. hoffnung / 10"

First release by this Hungarian-Austrian project on their own label. Hoffnung take us into a world of pessimistic heroism where forgotten poets ("Quand La Nuit Tombe") meet minimal-wave dancefloor anthem ("Hoffnung") or melancholic ballads ("Lucia’s Song", "Eli Eli"). From time to time folkloristic melodies and influences are used ("Sombres de Sang"), which gives Wermut their special distinctive sound. Superb ! Limited record to 297 copies.

together / away

Artist : Wermut

Label : Enfant Terrible

together / away / 7"

Wermut does not need much of an introduction. The duo has produced some of the finest and best electronic songs and sounds of the past few years. On this 7"" Wermut serves you two intense and melancholy songs. These songs are from the archive (recorded in 2003) but more then worthwhile to be made available at last. Both are addictive: one for the dancefloor and both for listening at home in good companion. This is all you might expect from Wermut at their best !

ether / 2x12"

After 4 years of intense cosmic labour, here comes full-length number five from the prog-electro duo, now turned trio with multi-instrumentalist Niedowierzanie joining forces, and assisted by guest drummer Falko Grau. The 4 long trance inducing Berlin-school influenced psychedelic pieces will take you on an 85 minutes long journey to the fountain of life. This new opus is without a doubt the band’s most traditionalist work to date, reflecting on the quintessence, the doctrine of the 5 elements, the cycles, the holy mountain, the world tree and what has been the bands most recurring symbolic interest: the heart of the world. Some "Tomhetian" melodies here, a hint of southern rock à la Earth and post-rock à la Gybe there, a soupcon of 80's minimal wave romanticism and a bit of cascadian feeling combined with loads of pulsating analogue sequencing in the style of Ash Ra Tempel, Tangerine Dream and Tim Blake, "Ether" is the logical continuation of works like "Anna" and "Les Nuits Dalmates", moving further away from the new-wave of the 80's and investigating the more obscure psychedelics of the 70's.. Enter the realm of metaphysical post-kraut-rock ! Limited to 310 hand-numbered copies.

Another great minimal release with Wermut (astonishing duo from Hamburg) on the A-side who play very fine synth combined with Frenchand German lyrics. The band also released a new 10" on the Italian post-industrial Old Europa Café label. On B-side, Rod Droid (a French robotman), sounds like computer games with synth machine... Absolutly great hammer record! You will see…

Artist : White Car

Label : Rainbow Body Records

untitled / 12"

White Car is an industrial space funk outfit based in Chicago. The duo is comprised of Elon Katz, who writes, records and produces the music and Orion Martin who plays live electronic percussion. The music utilizes classic heavy hitting EBM rhythms and early digital synthesis while integrating ideas of pop sensibility, post-punk funk and minimal synth music. Their debut self-titled ep is a record of eccentric paranoia and restrained emotion, characterized by a voice of hushed stammers and deep obsessive murmurs. The record's lyrical content explores ideas of hypothesized reality and the perceived nature of truth, instinctive desires in relation to the concept of love, and the apathetic guilt of other's mania and pain. The skeleton of the music is created by a solid rhythmic foundation of funk, vintage electro and proto-industrial references. Employing the empty spaces of these grooves is an assortment of spontaneously placed clamorous bursts, chugging analog arpeggios, faux brass sections and layered electronic percussion. Many of the record's sounds might be deemed "unusable" by contemporary production standards, yet White Car discovers ways to make sense of tones like electric piano, sampled turntable scratches, vocal scat and orchestra hits. The humor of the sound palette is deliberately used to identify a caricature of fear and darkness. Limited edition & highly recommended..!

Whodini were one of the true electro pioneers of the early 80's. A string of hits across the decade and well into the 90's has ensured their place in the genre's history books. "5 Minutes Of Funk" is without a doubt one of their classic tracks, and here it gets the remix treatment from none other than Dj Icee, who ups the tempo and adds his trademark breaks to create a contemporary dancefloor bomb...

orient express / last summer

Artist : Wish Key

Label : Dark Entries

orient express / last summer / 12"

Wish Key was an italo-disco group formed by the husband/wife duo of Manlio Cangelli & Lorella Ghilardi in Milan. Their 1st single "Orient Express" was released in 1983 by Discomagic Records. The song was arranged, composed and recorded by Manlio, with the lyrics by Lorella. It was supposed to be the new single for Blue Russell, but on the insistence of Severo Lombardoni of Discomagic Records, the group was persuaded to use a male vocalist. A demo of the song was given to Dj Massimo Berti, who contributed lead vocals, while the backing vocals were done by Blue Russell. The subsequent promotion of the song demanded finding an alternate female vocalist because Blue Russell was already committed to the promotion of her own single, 'I Wanna Fly Away'. Silvia Merelli, Berti's wife, was brought in for TV appearances and future recordings. In 1985 Massimo Berti began recording another single for the Wish Key project. "Last Summer" was recorded with help from italo producer Sandy Dian. "Orient Express" begins with a rolling bassline, bright synthesizer stabs, and a sampled train siren. The double-tracked male/female vocals compliment each other perfectly, heightening the dramatic tension. Massimo sings about taking a train ride as a metaphor for traveling through life's adventures. The song is accompanied by a shorter instrumental edit with an extended intro. On the flip is "Last Summer", a slower paced affair with Silvia recalling a dream of lying on the beach and having a good time. The breakdown introduces synthesized steel drums and Spanish guitar, for a touch of tropical melancholia. The vinyl comes housed in a jacket with original artwork of a train shuffling through the desert by Adriano Merigo. Each copy includes 2-sided postcard with lyrics, photos and notes designed by Eloise Leigh.

levitation / the colour and the form

levitation / the colour and the form / 2x7"

Following incubation there lays conception.. Non-intimate terms relayed within their intimate musical setting, a setting recommended only for the coexistence of self-contradictory creative antitheses. From plain sound-wanderings to weird figurations offered by the group known as Χωρίς Περιδέραιο (Without Necklace). This special act that released its works in the 1st half of the 80's, actually played a mixture of new-wave and minimal synth (punkish at times) in an exceptionally inspired manner. Following the rerelease of sole full album, their 1st ever release in 1983 by Art Nouveau Records (now rare and sought after), the single “Άνωση / Το χρώμα και το Σχήμα” ("Levitation / The Color And The Form"), is finally rereleased as well. However, 3 decades after its 1st edition, along with the original tracks, their alternative versions are also presented. In sequence to the fast and eruptive minimal electronic sounds exemplified by the original versions, these alternative ones move along similar lines. However, they are clearly differentiated such that they finally sound even more punchy and powerful. This double 7" single set comes in a strong gatefold cover and in 500 hand-numbered copies. Magical !

Artist : Wolfsheim

Label : Dark Entries

the sparrows and the nightingales / 12"

Wolfsheim are a synth-pop duo from Hamburg, Germany consisting of Markus Reinhardt (music) & Peter Heppner (lyrics and vocals). The band was founded in 1987 by Markus Reinhardt & Pompejo Ricciardi and was named after Meyer Wolfsheim, a fictional character from F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel 'The Great Gatsby'. Ricciardi soon left the band and was replaced by Peter Heppner, a childhood friend of Reinhardt's. Together they produced their 1st demo tape, 'Ken Manage', in 1988. After making a 2nd demo tape, 'Any But Pretty', in 1989, Wolfsheim applied at various labels until they caught the attention of independent record label Strange Ways Records. They are best known for their debut breakthrough single, "The Sparrows And The Nightingales", the 1st single to be released on Strange Ways in 1991. The band's musical style takes cues from the 80's new romantics, new-wave, synth-pop, and darkwave. The track's sombre synths were produced by Carlos Peron of Yello. Reinhardt says the lyric was inspired by 'The Great Gatsby', "in the 'onomatopoeic tension' between predator and security". Over 6 minutes, the narrator describes being lost, unsure of where his life is heading, using highly metaphorical language. On the flip is a brand new remix by German producer Ancient Methods, a pseudonym of Michael 'Trias' Wollenhaupt, who provides a driving, EBM-leaning, amphetamine-laced club ready cut. Designer Eloise Leigh has updated the record's original design with 2 sparrows enclosed in a blood moon circle against a deep black purple backdrop. Each copy comes with a black and white photo postcard notes by Carlos Peron and the song's lyrics. This release comes in time to celebrate the single's 25th anniversary.

The 80's are back. We are not talking about cool radio stations broadcasting old Spandau Ballet ballads (although it can be fun as well), but passionate enthusiasts looking for lost gems in the dark underground of the past. You find such people everywhere, in Belgium too. Onderstroom Records and Walhalla Records are the best-known examples. Die Blinden Records, an initiative of the organisator of the Belgian minimal festival Waveteef, is a new label with the same objectives. So far, label boss Mat Zwart released both Deathly Quiet! and the sublime debut LP by Luminance. Here is now an old release of a German quartet that was founded in 1982. People pay craziest prices for the X-Quadrat record on the Internet (up to 300€ !!). The band is hardly known and has only one release, but this is the sound that 80's freaks like to hear! This maxi contains 4 songs. "Kauf Dir Die Freiheit" is pure Neue Deutsche Welle. Think of what Malaria! or Fehlfarben did and you are on the right path. Indeed, such tracks were made in large amounts in Germany during the 80's. We can not get enough of it. The most interesting song is "Immer Und Ewig": dark minimal with doomy keyboards and a chorus with words like 'Verloren in die Dunkelheit', what more do you want? "Der Digitaltanz" has a very different style. The EBM beats remind us of DAF. And if that is not so, Die Gedanken sind frei ! "Information" is NDW with a tasty punk beat. We already said it before... this is material for 80's fans who really know what the period was about! Limited to 300 copies on colored vinyl !

the dream machine

Artist : X-Ray Pop

the dream machine / LP

X-Ray Pop are the synth-pop duo of Doc Pilot and Zouka Dzaza from Tours, France. They got their start in the no-wave art group Bocal 5 in 1981 and split off in 1984 to focus on their own brand of quirky synthesized electronics. Influenced by Erik Satie, Brigitte Bardot, Suicide and Young Marble Giants, they call their music 'minimum naive new-wave'. Armed with a Casio PT-20 keyboard and a rudimentary Yamaha MR10 drum machine they recorded their demo cassette and 1st 7" "Eurasienne / La Machine à Rêver" in 1984. Upgrading their synthesizers and adding some saxophone and guitar, they recorded the "Alcool / Amazone" 7" in 1985 and the "DS / El Gato" 7" in 1986. "The Dream Machine" collects X-Ray Pop's 1st 3 7" singles plus 8 songs from their demo cassette, never released on vinyl before. Their songs are short, concise and well structured; richly textured, moving at a quick speed with hardly a pause. The demos show a sense of humor, vitality and carefree playfulness. Zouka's pouting, tongue-in-cheek vocals (sung in French) come together for a catchy, sensuous, danceable, eccentric psychedelic ride. Reminiscent of the Mo-dettes, early OMD or Algebra Suicide, X-Ray Pop could be the missing link to Stereolab. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley directly from the original master tapes. Each LP comes in a neon yellow jacket with an 8 page booklet full of unreleased photos, original artwork and lyrics. 28 years later, this is the first time since the original issue that the songs of X-Ray Pop are reappearing on vinyl again, but is the world ready ?

fugitive / LP

Xarah Dion has composed and produced electronic music on the Montreal stage for over 10 years. You may have met her at La Brique or heard duo with Marie Davidson in "Les Momies De Palerme" and their album 'Brûlez Ce Coeur' (2010), published on Constellation. While Davidson & Pierre Guerineau developed a more rock sound with Essaie Pas, Dion took the lead wave with her ep New Zodiac (2013), followed by his debut album 'Le Mal Necessaire' (2014). The musical 80's structure was clear from the beginning and serves very well to Dion's poetry; The slow and dramatic movements contrast well with the more rhythmic and cold passages, the angelic voice hovers and sometimes descends to earth to murmur its pain. No need to change the recipe when it rocks; 'Fugitive' (2016), released on Visage Musique, marks a step forward by further detailing the various forms of wave, and bringing out a sound that has remained subtle until now: EBM, or even a little Belgian new-beat. One of our favorite album from 2016 !!!

vigils / LP

Originally self-released by the band as a limited edition CD-r in 2006, here is the remastered LP version with a previously unavailable bonus track. Merging the cold, cinematic aesthetics of artist Liz Wendelbo with the architectural exactitude of Sean McBride (aka Martial Canterel), Xeno & Oaklander have been the sharpest spearheads of 21th century minimal-synth since their formation in 2004. Using analogue synthesizers and instruments exclusively, the duo record all of their songs live in the studio, a challenge to the common practice of cut and paste recording where immediacy is often sacrificed in favor of a far-removed drag and drop electronic pop. Recorded in one continuous take on October 1st 2006, and played to loving death by all of the Dj's at the weekly Wierd party for the past 4 years, "Vigils" has long been a cornerstone and inspiration to a new young generation of electronic bands in the Brooklyn synth scene and beyond. Uptempo, echo-laden synthesizers and drum machines provide a spacious backdrop for Miss Liz's ephemeral vocal presence. Their melodic, mournful oeuvre is an invocation of a lost future that was abandoned years ago in favor of something less human. These 8 tracks are both fragile and psychedelic, suggesting an electronic equivalent of the British shoegaze bands while maintaining the wildly aggressive stripped-down, raw and unmediated spirit of punk and the seminal industrial noise groups that informed the ideals of the original wave of European minimal electronic bands. Whaoo !!

sets & lights

sets & lights / CD

Xeno & Oaklander create a universe where technology is beautifully timeless, where electricity pulses with vigor and effortless finesse. The standard meaning of 'ghosts of technology', with its equally standard images of looming architecture and lifeless shells of machines, is rendered obsolete. Nimble electronic melodies sing, stretch and glow like elegant apparitions. Grandiosity and restraint live harmoniously side-by-side, just as the dual vocals of McBride and Wendelbo weave in and out of one another, sometimes an isolated croon and sometimes a layered texture. From the title track, with its thumping robotic heartbeat to the orchestral (yet still danceable), transportive instrumental, 'Sets & Lights' is a record that invites the listener to become fully immersed. Tracks like "Blue" and "The Staircase" are punchy sing-a-long industrial pop songs while "Desert Rose" uses lush synthesizer textures to rival the most forlorn folk balladeer. The interplay between McBride and Wendelbo yields very little that is conventional, but quite a lot that's alluring. There's an enigmatic combination of various sensibilities that nevertheless produces a singularly focused vision. McBride sings, 'the theater, the stage, the sets the lights, masking some grand delight'. This is a record that makes the most of the power of electronic instruments to set a scene, to evoke intrigue, and to invite the mind to wander into those shadowy places where grand delights hide..

par avion / LP

Xeno & Oaklander are a minimal electronics girl/boy duo from Brooklyn, NY. They began writing music and soundtracks in 2004. Liz Wendelbo is French / Norwegian and Sean McBride is from Maryland. They record their songs live in their Brooklyn studio and play analogue synthesizers and instruments exclusively. This summer, Xeno & Oaklander bring their minimal electronic sounds to Ghostly International with new album 'Par Avion', their 1st for the label. The album's title is a reference to postcards and was used to mark airmail sent from exotic places. The songs are postcards of love for a cold age — shimmering moments from the present, romantic messages from the past, and love mementos for the future. Together, they make up an album of contrasts. The songs move from upbeat to downbeat, slow to fast, light to dark. 'Par Avion's rich diversity of sounds comes at least in part from the fact that it's an album-long ode to synesthesia. As singer Liz Wendelbo explains, 'sound makes me think of a scent, which makes me think of an image, which makes me think of a certain kind of light'. The sensory experiences are palpable: "Jasmine" calls to mind the intoxicating scent of jasmine flowers that bloom at night, "Nuage D'Ivoire" sweats under a tropical sky full of clouds that hold the key to the past and the future, "Sheen" glistens with reflections dancing in the water and with inner visions of romance, where light and dark meet in the pupil of the eye. Adding to the sense of exoticism, Wendelbo's whispery vocals are sung in both French and English, calling to mind Jane Birkin and Françoise Hardy. Again, there's a contrast between dark and light, tropical warmth of Wendelbo's vocals is juxtaposed against duo's signature icy cold, ultra-modern synth sounds. Those sounds have a new component for 'Par Avion'; synth wizard Sean McBride uses an analogue Serge modular synth to create washes of sound that recall 90's shoegaze. The result is an album that stimulates and fascinates throughout, a rich feast for all the senses, a world to get lost in again and again. Includes 11x11 paper art insert with lyrics and credits. Download card included ;)

Group: Xex ultimately plays out like some strange cry from the distant past, or alternately, a document sent back to us from some very bizarre future. Alternating male and female vocals chant some of the most strangely humorous lyrics over the 12 tracks, as synthesizers buzz and twinkle over metronomic drumbeats. This is some of the most minimal of all minimal synth records (there's no dancefloor fillers here), yet fans of bands like Crash Course in Science, Ceramic Hello, Experimental Products, or even Devo enthusiasts wondering what all this minimal synth hubbub is about will find a lot to love here. The design is a fantastic reproduction of the original Lp, and the album comes with an awesome 'zine packed full of photos and information about Xex. A really stellar reissue!

change / LP+CD

Xex were an all-synthesizer band from South River, New Jersey in the late 70's. The band formed when a trio of high school misfits with funny names (Waw Pierogi, Thumbalina Gugielmo and Alex Zander) teamed up with some friends from Rutgers College. They released their debut album 'Group: Xex' in 1980. Dark Entries were lucky to discover the master tapes of their unreleased 2nd album “xex:change” in Waw's basement. 'Xex: Change' takes a leap from where the band left off at the end of 1980. David Anderson left the group making Xex a quartet. Recorded during the summer of 1981 and produced with Ziggy Rodberg, Xex further developed the aesthetic of the 1st album. The 7 songs here are more complex and hypnotic than the synth-punk outbursts of 'Group: Xex'. Their new synthesizers, a sequential Circuits Prophet 5 and a Minimoog, evoke the high-tech utopia of Patrick Cowley and proto-techno of Afrika Bambaataa. Thumbalina's vocals have a detached, icy quality. Lyrics revolve around Xex' melange of oeuvres, pop, kitsch and New Jersey mall culture; offering commentary on species-specific adaptations for copulation, technophilia/phobia and the Jersey shore. 'Xex: Change', a multiple entendre that refers to the evolution of the group since its 1st album, group interaction in the creative process, and underlying sexual ambiguity. The group did not have the funds to release the album and it sat in obscurity for over 30 years. The vinyl comes housed in jacket created by Alex Zander for his senior art project in college in 1980. Each LP includes a double sided 11x11 cardstock insert with lyrics and photos. Also included is a full length DVD featuring a 9-song Xex concert from 1981, recorded at Hurrah in New York. With the bonus DVD included in the new LP, more people will see Xex perform than ever saw them play live. More than 30 years later 'Xex: Change' finally sees the light of day and fits in today's world all too perfectly.

Xymox, later known as Clan of Xymox, was founded in Nijmegen, a city in the east of the Netherlands, in 1983 by Ronny Moorings (vocals, guitars, synthesizers) and Anka Wolbert (vocals, bass). Ronny saved up to buy a TEAC 144 4-track tape recorder and the duo relocated to Amsterdam in april of 1983. They began to record songs utilizing a Yamaha CS-15, Korg MS-10 and MS-20, a BOSS Dr. Rhythm DR-55, guitar and effects pedals. Layering drone-like tones of monophonic synthesizers over tape loops, rhythm tracks, guitar, and bass, they created a unique fusion of lush psychedelia and dark, angular atmospherics. The result was a 5-song ep, 'Subsequent Pleasures', was released in 1984 and limited to 500 vinyl copies. It was a precursor to the darkwave sounds of their self-titled debut LP on 4AD Records, which was released the following year. At the time, Anka was designing silk-screened posters for a music venue called Oktopus. She based the sleeve design on a drawing she had done of Ronny lying in the grass that summer and used some cutouts and details of other photos. Today, the record is highly sought after by collectors. One song from the ep, "Muscoviet Musquito", was later re-recorded for the compilation album 'Lonely Is An Eyesore' released by 4AD in 1987. All jackets have been silk-screened with pink and grey paint, using the original plates Anka created in 1984. Each copy includes a fold-out pink newsprint poster with never before seen photos of the band, lyrics and liner notes by Anka and Ronny. Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) is an influential Japanese electro-pop band, formed in 1978. They are renowned as a major influence in popular music, and for pioneering the electropop music genre. The principal members were Haruomi Hosono (bass), Yukihiro Takahashi (drums) and Ryuichi Sakamoto (keyboards). The band was originally conceived as a one-off studio project by Hosono, the other 2 members being recruited session musicians. Their 8th album here (with its cutting-edge production) was very popular and probably one their best albums. Making abundant use of new synthesizers, samplers, digital and computer recording technology as it became available, their popularity and influence extended beyond Japan. Generally the band were highly regarded as electronic pioneers, and continue to be remixed and sampled by modern artists... Original copies ;)

As the follow-up to his "Neuromantic" Lp from 1981, "What, Me Worry?" shows Takahashi relinquishing the controls and handing some of the vocal jobs to Zaine Griff (ex Gary Numan band) and the guitars to Bill Nelson (ex Be Bop Deluxe, then solo). There are not as many catchy songs here as on the earlier album, but there is a rather sprightly cover of "It's All Too Much," which sounds like it was written for Takahashi's rather strange voice. The addition of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Harry Hosono to the song "Flashback" doesn't exactly make it stand out among the rest (but it's nice to know they're there), but the multi-vocaled "This Strange Obsession" has a propulsive beat and melody. Nice original album from 1982 ;)

Considered by many to be the first full length house record ever produced (tracks from this 1984 album have been bootlegged and re-edited over the years but here is the full in it’s official repress glory) made at a time when electronic instruments were exciting the hell out of young musicians, enabling them to release their own tracks in a raw and personal form. The album full of brilliant musical ideas that are accompanied with some often very amusing commentary and songs. you should have this in your life !!!

I am the dj

Artist : Z-Factor

Label : Booton Records

I am the dj / 12"

One of the very first Chicago house records. A classic, and a totally overlooked moment in dance music history from a music pioneer, Jesse Saunders, originally released on Mitchbal. Originally the alias of Vince Lawrence who used the Z-Factor name to put out "(I like to do it in) Fast Cars" also on Mitchball, Jesse used the name to release this classic. Whereas his other releases from that era were straight up house (i.e. Fantasy, Funk U Up, On & On), this is acid electro with vocal touches. Classic...

Artist : Zenamon

Label : Private Records

untitled / LP

Jaime Zenamon's debut album from 1984 available now! Zenamon studied guitar and composition in Israel, Spain, Portugal and in various South American countries and was student of Abel Carlevaro. He worked as teacher at the Berlin music university (HdK) from 1980 until 1992. The album was recorded at Christopher Franke's (Tangerine Dream) studio and features Udo Hanten from the cult Krautrock project YOU. Similar sound compared to Cluster, Neu!, Kraftwerk but with stronger esoteric world music influences. Nandu Muley playing the Santoor, a 100 string music instrument which was already used by Syrian musicians for the production of their hits some thousand years ago :) Originally released on Polydor in 1984 the album get's re-released for the 1st time by Private Records in 2015. Remastered from the original master tapes at 24-bit. Really rare recordings; one of the most valuable and sought after German electronic records of the 80's..

sinusoids / 12"

Zero DB is better known as one half of the Deflektorz who did the first release on Black Label. Again 4 very strong dark, funky, Detroit inspired electro tracks. Three of them are dancefloor aimed, while the last is more one to listen to. If you like Drexciya at all, you will love this too. No Joke !

ep 3

Artist : Zeta Reticula

ep 3 / 12"

Massive selection produced by Umek. 4 cuts, 2 of which are wickedly produced 4/4 techno cuts, but flip to the electro orientated side. Oh mama ! Truly huge...

sandy eyes / flucht

Artist : Zwischenfall

Label : Fuzz Dance

sandy eyes / flucht / 12"

Italo track from 1984 with a nice instrumental bass-line and woman voice. Very melodic song with a little "oriental" flavour due to sithar chord. B-side is a pure space-italo track, more evolutive than the first one. Just let take off !!!

Artist : Zwischenfall

Label : Dark Entries

heute / 12"

Zwischenfall formed in 1982 with Michael Sass (synths), Martin Urban (bass/vocals) and Stephan Kraemer (guitar/drums); all of German descent. They were united by musical sensibilities that combined electronic and traditional instruments developing the basis for their 1982 demo recordings. By chance Patrick Codenys of the Belgian electro pioneers Front 242 heard 2 songs and decided to record a 4-song ep for the electro band’s newly formed label Mask. The "Heute" ep was released in 1983 after a week of recording in Front’s private studio under the direction of sound-whiz Daniel B. Bearing in mind Midi had not been invented at the time, the recording involved some extensive sound sculpting including the use of individual synths for separate drum sounds. To create an organic feel to the combination of acoustic and electric guitar, a trumpet and a bass were incorporated into the electronic arrangements. Sonically way ahead of their time, Zwischenfall have a distinct sound with hard rhythms and melancholic melodies that blend minimal yet catchy electronics to create a very danceable production. The ep also features 2 bonus tracks from the "Heute" sessions never before released on vinyl : the uptempo "Tausend Jahre" and "Katastrophe" the demo version of "Flucht". 2016 repress version including 11x11 cardstock lyrics/artwork sheet..

sandy eyes / 12"

Zwischenfall formed in Belgium in 1982 with Michael Sass (synths), Martin Urban (bass/vocals) and Stephan Kraemer (guitar/drums). They were united by their interest in combining electronic and traditional instruments, which developed the basis for 1982 demo recordings. By chance Patrick Codenys of the Belgian electro pioneers Front 242, heard 2 songs and decided to record a 4-song ep. The 'Heute' ep was released in 1983 after a week of recording in Front 242's private studio under the direction of sound-whiz Daniel B. In 1984 Martin Urban left the band and was replaced by vocalist Iben Larssen and bassist Thomas Kürsten. They recorded their 2nd 12" single, "Sandy Eyes", which contained a remake of their song "Flucht", sung in the English this time. Some fairly revolutionary techniques were used, including the introduction of sampling (with an Emulator I and Ensoniq Mirage), and 'gated reverb', in which the sound of a large reverb room was processed through a Yamaha CS15's envelope follower. This record was originally released in 1984 on both Les Disques du Crépuscule and Fuzz Dance, packaged in 3 different covers. Our reissue ep features 2 bonus tracks from the 1984 recording sessions previously unreleased on vinyl: the saxophone drenched instrumental "Polar Magazine" and street beat dance track "Sacred Time". The record comes housed in a newly designed die-cut jacket by Eloise Leigh, updating the magenta and yellow color scheme of the Fuzz Dance release. Each copy includes a double-sided insert with lyrics, notes, and never seen before photos.

paranormale aktivität

Artist : Zwischenwelt

Label : Clone Aqualung Series

paranormale aktivität / 2x12"

Zwischenwelt is the paranormal audio/visual concern of Susana Correira, Beta Evers & Penelope Martin alongside esteemed ex-Drexciya producer, Heinrich Mueller (aka Dopplereffekt / Arpanet / Der Zyklus). Zwischenwelt is similar in style and sound to Mueller's almost indivisible Black Replica and Zerkalo projects of the last few years, which were coincidentally coordinated with a strong female presence. Originally CD only release on Rephlex Records. One of the best record album from 2016 !!

trust no woman

Artist : ZYX

Label : Dark Entries

trust no woman / LP

ZYX are the duo of Inge Graf and Walter Zyx. They formed in Vienna, Austria in 1977. Committing themselves to the "aestheticisation of everyday life" in all fields of art, their works with video, photography, graphic design, and music are visually influenced by Pop art, Constructivism, Futurism, Dadaism, Beat culture, and the electronic rock of the 60's and 70's. They are considered pioneers of multimedia art worldwide, and continue to remain active to this day. 'Trust No Woman' is the debut album from ZYX, and was released in 1981 on the label RCA Music. It was recorded, mixed and mastered from march to august 1981 at their own Sun Moon & Stars Studio Vienna. They designed short, punchy songs around a barrage of analogue synths, rock-solid electro beats and tempered, low-key vocals. Cold and claustrophobic atmospheres collide with mechanical rhythms The songs are sung in English with a heavy German accent, and lyrics channel obscure existentialist dialogues. Despite the sombre tone, there lingers a touch of the enthusiasm that accompanied the influx of affordable technologies and new media of the era. It is a album that advances on the ideas set forth by The Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, Tuxedomoon and Yello. The vinyl comes housed in replica of the original jacket design, which features a photograph from a video still by ZYX. Each LP includes a copy of the double sided 11x11 full color insert that was included with the original pressing, which features photos and lyrics. Faced with the increasingly blurry line between human and machine, they approach their art with a still-potent blend of ambivalence, optimism, and melancholy.
