Police Des Moeurs may be Alphaville's greatest export since Lemmy Caution and Anna Karina. The duo intuitively know when to let sequencers speak for themselves, when to chime in, and when to command their drum machines to play another remorseless fill. Best experienced while observing brutalist architecture, a worn existential paperback in your pocket. Limited edition of 200 on white vinyl ;)

Label : Visage Musique

split / 7"

3rd in a serie of 4 split 7" releases featuring a Visage Musique artist alongside a guest of their choice. For this installment, Montreal's Brusque Twins is pairing with Toronto's Kontravoid. Brusque Twins have been producing dark minimal synth music in the vein of bands like Linear Movement for some time now. Their latest endeavour is a more modern nod to the sublimely repetitious but infectiously danceable factory floor. In "Game Of Desire", Derek George's hypnotic groove is partnered beautifully with Hollie Hensman's airy, ethereal vocals increases that hypnotism ten-fold. Despite making music that sounds like the musings of teenage vampire bat that's crazy into Bauhaus, Kontravoid stoic grimness is quite human, which makes tracks like "Impurities" so unsettling. It starts up flickering like the electronics in an abandoned mall, and gets even more funereal, the bassy synths glugging away through muttering vocals and horrified choirs, like a tour of burnt-out night clubs that are somehow still being used. Despite the bleakness, it's hard not to dance ;)

When Ottawa's Violence released their debut ep last March, we declared them our spirit animal. Since it was one of our favourite ep from 2013, it's understandable that the arrival of their 1st full-length has turned our January blues into some happy dancing. The record's sound continues in the same vein as their previous release: artfully executed synth-pop with the exact dark flavour that we love. This is more proof that Visage Musique works with the best bands. The title is a German philosophical term for experience, and that's exactly what you should do with this record. Bring it with you as you go about, play it in all kinds of situations, really experience it. Retro-futuristic synth-laden complex electronic pop produced by Xavier Paradis (aka Automelodi) and limited to 250 copies..

Montreal's Visage Musique can seemingly do no wrong. Rarely do they add a new band to their roster, so it's a momentous occasion when they do. It's thrilling to discover a new act as good and fully formed as Violence, and it should be no surprise that Visage did the unearthing. Ottawa outfit Violence's beautiful take on minimal synth music expertly leads you through a range of emotions. It's equally appropriate for when being bombarded by snow as it is for sunny afternoons spent in the park. People will break up at the beginning of one song, then start making out at the chorus. That isn't to say the band is confused about what they're trying to do—this is a decidedly confident debut ep. These are masterfully arranged and intricate synth-pop songs that evoke goths dancing to Deux in a 80's Parisian basement, while simultaneously sounding utterly timeless.. Repress on black vinyl limited to 200 copies !

Montreal's Ambrose released their debut single "Hourglass Sands" back in October 2013, and now it's finally time for a debut ep from the duo. It's fitting that some time has passed, as the ep deals with seasons, the passing of time, and the inevitable change of interpersonal relationships, all to the sound of beautifully executed keyboard electronics. It starts with "Hourglass Sands", which expresses the ephemeral nature of time in a staircase melody. 'Sifting through my hands, the hourglass sands on the distant beach', sings Sonia Thomson, voice warm and full. 'I thought my grip was firm and I held it in my palm, but I woke and the dream was gone'. You might think that you have a control of time, but it never fails to get away. The summery beach imagery transitions into some more weather imagery. "Winters" has a slower driving pace, and is set in the stark cold of February, and depicts a cold and distant love. "Citadel Passage" represents June, though the kind of early summer month where winter's cold breath lingers. The mood is mournful as the narrator realizes that her partner was more in love with the feeling of being loved than with her as a person, resulting in a sound like the wistful hope of spring compromised by an icy lack of compassion. The album does end on a sunny note with "End Of The Cold Days", light and heartfelt like the 1st appearance of the sun from some heavy clouds. Ambrose seem to have perfected the art of emotional synth pop: accessible, well-executed, and emotionally relatable..

trashbag / 12"

Formed in 2010, Brusque Twins is Hollie Hensman & Derek Evan George. 'Trashbag' (their 3rd ep) is a statement of personal anxiety, sexual tension, crude emotions, frustration and loss of love. Abandoning their prior creative process of writing in the studio, these tracks developed primarily through live performances, failing and succeeding on stage for everyone to see. It's experimental. It's analog and digital. It's industrial. It's techno. It's their most realized artistic statement to date. Pressed on clear with black smoke vinyl in PVC sleeve with 12x12 full color insert. Limited edition of 300

It's here! We break out our happy dances every time we get our hands on something new from Violence Musique. No surprises here: their new ep is excellent. We've already shared our love of the 1st 2 singles on this ep ("L'Invention Du Divertissement" and "Shaking Pictograms"), and they slot right in with the rest of the adventurous, slick songs on the ep. There's a lot of mostly instrumental songs to get lost in, like the decidedly space-y "Héliogabale" or "Gap Junctions", which brings back memories of high school biology (gap junctions are the passageways between animal cells that transport things back and forth). Actually, the latter could work really well as the soundtrack for colourful and crazy science animations. And then there's "Mycroft Mixeudeim", which has distant vocals that sound like they're coming from a low-volume megaphone, a great synth jab and the same style that defines the rest of the ep: quick forward motion, call-and-response between different synth tones and some seriously infectious melodies. Tip !!

Montreal dark disco duo Gold Zebra impressed us a couple of years back with their appearance on a label compilation, and now the group have finally lined up their debut album. The self-titled album consists of 10 songs, including an "Intro", "Outro" and "Interlude". A couple of the tracks from the aforementioned sampler compilation re-emerge here. The material was recorded in Montreal over a period of more than 2 and a half years from April 2011 to December 2013. Production was handled by the band's own guitarist/synth player JP Richard, who mixed along with JB Valiquette. Pressed on white vinyl. Gold foil stamped back cover. Includes digital download ;)

Xarah Dion has composed and produced electronic music on the Montreal stage for over 10 years. You may have met her at La Brique or heard duo with Marie Davidson in "Les Momies De Palerme" and their album 'Brűlez Ce Coeur' (2010), published on Constellation. While Davidson & Pierre Guerineau developed a more rock sound with Essaie Pas, Dion took the lead wave with her ep New Zodiac (2013), followed by his debut album 'Le Mal Necessaire' (2014). The musical 80's structure was clear from the beginning and serves very well to Dion's poetry; The slow and dramatic movements contrast well with the more rhythmic and cold passages, the angelic voice hovers and sometimes descends to earth to murmur its pain. No need to change the recipe when it rocks; 'Fugitive' (2016), released on Visage Musique, marks a step forward by further detailing the various forms of wave, and bringing out a sound that has remained subtle until now: EBM, or even a little Belgian new-beat. One of our favorite album from 2016 !!!
