tv scape

Artist : Kuruki

Label : OnderStroom Records

tv scape / LP

Kuruki was a Belgian minimal synth-pop band project spearheaded by Ghent based musician Gerry D'Haeyer and Alain Bureau. The band was founded early 80's and shortly after it's conception a 1st release was recorded. The single "Crocodile Tears" immediately hit the charts and became cult. Afterwards the band released 12" including maxi single "Such A Liar". After intensive touring a new single "Just A Cat" was spawned in 1983. As a live band at that time Alan Gevaert, from dEUS, and Chris Whitley joined them. Live, Kuruki put down a mysterious act, with a lot of colour & show elements. In 1984 the final release "TV Scape", a full lp, was released. On this record the last pieces of the puzzle fitted together. On an accurately crafted structure of frivolous minimal electronics Sally Joy & Monsieur Tic sang about an era wherein alienation & mass consumption are an everyday routine & television offers the ideal escape. The lp is remastered at the Equus masteringstudios & is pressed on 160gr quality vinyl. Essential..!

eddy merckz

Artist : The Misz

Label : OnderStroom Records

eddy merckz / LP

Beside the usual noise & experimental projects there were also great new-wave bands like The Misz. "Eddy Merckz" is a good example for the extreme high quality of the 80's cassette culture scene. Their very catchy sound is comparable to early Virgin Prunes with some more pop-appeal; fine harmonies and male/female singer made this band to remarkable milestone in european new-wave, although they unfortunately never reached a bigger audience. And "Eddy Merckz" is in our eyes their best work : politics and music found together... Limited to 300 copies pressed on high quality vinyl (160gr.) ;)

Artist : Aroma Di Amore

Label : OnderStroom Records

ongehoord / LP

Aroma Di Amore returns on vinyl. 10 previously unreleased tracks on a dark red LP. Elvis Peeters, Fred Angst & Lo Meulen have selected 9 tracks from their archives and added one new song. "Hartslag" was recorded at Trixx in February 2010 and is a cover of "Heartbeat" by the post-punk band Wire. Most of the unreleased tracks ("Snoep Voor Jou", "Bewegende Beelden",..) were recorded during rehearsels and are excellent examples of their potential as new wave band & songcrafters. There are also some alternate version of well-known Aroma songs on "Ongehoord". The track "Moeder Gaat Neer" is the version they played on the Rock Rally competition way before it was released on "De Sfeer Van Grote Dagen". Comes with a doublesided insert & limited to 550 copies...

half-unreleased madness

Artist : Bene Gesserit

Label : OnderStroom Records

half-unreleased madness / LP

Very cool compilation of partially released, partially unreleased Bene Gesserit tracks. The husband & wife duo of Alain Neffe and Nadine Bal counted as one of the most frivolous and surprising live acts around during the 80's. On top of a catchy but minimal synth basis created by B GHoLa (Alain Neffe) runs the strange, and playfull voice by BeNeDiCT G (Nadine Bal). This is Belgian minimal synth-pop for the crazy ones among us, but aren't we all a bit mad?

second hand emotions and half forgotten feelings

Artist : Human Flesh

Label : OnderStroom Records

second hand emotions and half forgotten feelings / LP

Human Flesh is a long lived project of Alain Neffe. The tracks presented here are all unreleased songs recorded in the mid 80's. With a wide range of unconventional instruments Neffe & his compadres create their own dark & twisted world. WIth a lot of improvisation & cracked up minimal synth going on this makes up a great album. Besides synths & rythm boxes we hear zither, bells, strings, tarang, ocarina, Yugoslavian voice, reel to reel tape scratch & more. Unique..!

Artist : Siglo XX

Artist : Tranquil Eyes

Label : OnderStroom Records

walks / LP

Much needed re-issue of this fantastic and unfortunately overlooked 1985 tape on Stichting Stopcontact. Lex Grauwen & Paul Oosterbaan had worked together for about 8 years before they formed Tranquil Eyes in 1982. They decided to turn their back to stage performances and started experimenting with home-taping. Using an array of electronics, Tranquil Eyes recorded a great amount of songs and made a fine selection on 'Walks'. Their 1st and only release. The wonderful produced tracks sound a lot like A Blaze Colour and Snowy Red. Minimal-synth at its best with a great feel for song structures, melody and occasionally aiming at the dancefloor. If you're at all attuned to the cassette culture of the early years don't miss out on this one. Limited edition of 500 copies, including a booklet with songtexts, photo's and liner notes. Magnificent !!

the ultimate edition 1980-1984

Artist : Snowy Red

Label : OnderStroom Records

the ultimate edition 1980-1984 / 5x12"

Tremendous 5xLP box by one of the highest acclaimed minimal synth bands from the 80's. The Snowy Red project started as a one-man band by Micky Mike. With a few synthesizers, a 12/2 mixing desk and a 2-track reel to reel recorder he created repetitive synth masterpieces in the vein of Suicide and Polyphonic Size. These black synthetic pearls were spread over 2 albums: the self-titled 'Snowy Red' and 'The Right To Die', both are included in this box, officially remastered, and with original artwork. Only a few months ago, when the project was nearing completion, Michael Thiel (the son of Micky) made a great discovery: demo tracks of the 1st album!! Besides proto-versions of "Blood Blood Blood", "Maud Is Dead" and Deep Desire", the main discovery is the 22 minutes version of The Wild Boys: an electronic trip you do not want to end! And there's more... Underground club hit "Breakdown" was released throughout the 80's in several different versions. Included in this box are the 12" & the 7" versions, both featuring the beautiful Carol on vocals. Further down the line on disc four we find Micky Mike's solo version of the track which was 1st released on "Walking After Midnight" in 1980. This is an absolutely raw and honest version. Also included are the unreleased tracks "Lies In Your Eyes" and "Red Skies", both excellent additions to the Snowy Red puzzle, and 3 stripped down demo's made for the 'Vision' album. Very different from the 1st two releases, the 'Vision' album was Micky's most ambitious effort. In short this 5xLP box is essential stuff for anyone interested in the history of the Belgian minimal synth god Snowy Red. Limted to 500 copies with a 24p booklet with unseen photos and extensive background information. Nice collector item ;)

the factory scream

Artist : Twilight Ritual

Label : OnderStroom Records

the factory scream / LP

Twilight Ritual was/is the main project by Geert Coppens and Peter Bonne. During the early 80's they were involved in many other bands including Autumn and Linear Movement, but Twilight Ritual is by far the most inspired project. The spirit of the band lingers on beneath the work of Autumn through A Split Second. The work of Twilight Ritual is diverse, yet consise. Their pioneering album 'Rituals' inspired other musicians and became an underground cult classic in the minimal synth genre. 'The Factory Scream' is a compilation of varied works recorded during 1984 and 1986. After finishing the tracks for the album 'Rituals' they went on discovering new areas of expression. And it shows "Visions Of Steel" and "L'Uomo Moderno" are 2 international sounding and wonderful analogue induced tracks, "Wired To The Machines" could have been a potential club hit, "Black Track" can stand next to the best Neon Judgement material and "She Told Me Lies" is a truly mesmerizing 80's synth-pop song. 'The Factory Scream' has many different facets, and it often sounds like there is more than one band playing on this album! Limited to 500 copies..

music for fireworks

Artist : Polar Praxis

Label : OnderStroom Records

music for fireworks / LP

In 1978, Philippe Genion started creating bands with all the friends that he was meeting in the train from Charleroi to Brussels, on the way to the rock concerts he went to several times per week. Many bands were created, among which Los Casios, The Presocratic Umbrellas, JTB, Confite Sonar... In the meantime, parallel to being involved in bands with other people, Genion, who had become S3 Evets, created 3 solo projects : A Finger Society, for pop electronic songs; The Penultimate Infinity, for arty projects, not only music but also painting, poems, writing and performances, and Polar Praxis for more serious and also industrial music. The only project that became prolific was Polar Praxis. In 1985, Polar Praxis released 'Musiques Pour Feux D'Artifice" on PIAS's Scarface sub-label, a 2 side/2 songs LP containing rythmic dance-like electronic music, which pre-figured the Dj's of the end of the 90's ! Later, Polar Praxis released a 2nd, and last, mini-album 'Fireworks', a collection of songs all titles "Music For Fireworks", repetitive music in the style and inspiration of Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Both were actually used as music for professional fireworks in Belgium and Europe. Fantastic re-issue limited to 500 copies..!

Artist : Twilight Ritual

Label : OnderStroom Records

rituals / LP

Twilight Ritual's 'Rituals' album is one of the best kept secrets of the synth-pop / coldwave movement. Sinister, dark and a bunch of touching melodies. Peter Bonne & Geert Coppens had already been playing for a few years in other projects such as Autumn, Linear Movement and in 1985 they managed to create this stunning album. Highlights on the album include "I Never Called You A Dream", "Rooms", "Amorphous Materials", "Closed Circuit" and.. well every other track. When the LP was originally released by some awkward mistake the artwork was printed in reverse (black became white and white became black). The artwork is now restored to its original form, how it was intended to be. This album was born at the height of the analogue era, when Geert and Peter collected as much synths and recording devices as they could get their hands on. Using the all-time favorite TR808 as rhythm provider, sequencers and synces effects formed the basics for a unique sounding album. Sounds were processed in every possible unintended way, recording layer over layer with voices, guitars and doubled keyboards and solos. Edition of 500 copies. Be fast on this one ;)

Artist : Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat

Label : OnderStroom Records

weltuntergangsstimmung / LP

After several albums on top labels Kraak and Conspiracy, KTAOABC releases their 5th album 'Weltuntergangsstimmung' on Zeal and OnderStroom Records. The new record isn't the drone folk album you might expect from the band. Their newest shows us a whole new and different side. Frontman Stef Heeren recorded the songs for 'Weltuntergangsstimmung' with an old drumm machine, analogue synthesizers and guitar. And An Pierlé adds wonderful backing vocals on a few songs. Kiss The Anus.. still is the hypnotising and apocalyptical band, but transformed overnight into a new new-wave band. Whaooo!!

dance remotion

Artist : Company Of State

Label : OnderStroom Records

dance remotion / LP

Belgian new wave & Diy minimal synth duo that started out experimenting with a rhythm box and post-punk guitars in the vein of early Cabaret Voltaire. Rudolf Hecke explains the origin of the band: “By the end of the 70's we were both living in small towns near Leuven. I had been playing in bands since 1973 and was still living with my parents in Veltem-Beisem where the garage was my rehearsal-room. One day he showed up, he was looking for a songwriter, he'd be the singer. He rode a bike.” The group debuted in 1983 on their own label with an incredible 7" (Dark/Discipline - Dance Remotion/Here as I Am). Rudolf Hecke provided screeching guitarplay with different forms of feedback and distortion, Paul Taes expressed his mood through his singing and the rhythm box did what it had to do, it rumbled along. It made sense for COS to join the Anything But Records label run by Ludo Camberlin (A Blaze Colour), where they shared the roster with bands like Neon Judgement, Poésie Noire, Aimless Device, Men 2nd.. On stage they always delivered a spectacle to the public. “Well, we very much liked to mess up things. Most of the time there was blood, I broke my nose once and ended up at the hospital when I cut my left arm with a razor blade on stage. We had some medieval weapons we'd like to throw around while the strobo's were lit.” On this retrospective LP release the emphasis lies on the 1st few years of the band including their first 7" and demo recordings from that period. When the experiments were still rough, the spirit high and the results chaotic and surprisingly dynamic. Edition of 500 copies !

Artist : Frozen Ducks

Label : OnderStroom Records

untitled / LP

Frozen Ducks were the 2 brothers Hans & Lex Grauwen. The short-lived duo had Hans doing vocals, and Lex playing synths and doing the production of the tracks. The 9 electro / new wave songs sound a lot like the Tranquil Eyes 'Walks' album and this release can in many ways be seen as the accompanying release to the 'Walks' album. In fact: the Tranquil Eyes song "Television" started out as a Frozen Ducks track. The line-up of the bands is almost the same, the bass and the overall production is just as deep, rich and poignant; only this time the drum patterns are more apparent and the atmosphere is much darker with lyrics about a troubling childhood and a vague view on what the future will bring. During the mid-80's Hans & Lex recorded well over 50 tracks of early electro / new wave for Frozen Ducks, about 15 could be rescued and remastered. "Beginnings" and "Lost Freedom" were released on the legendary Dutch experimental compilations Contactdisc 4 and Contactdisc 5. Which included bands like X-Ray Pop, Twilight Ritual, Tranquil Eyes, Kapotte Muziek, De Fabriek. All other tracks on this album are previously unreleased and come from the vaults of Lex Grauwen. With much dedication and joy these tracks have been unearthed and compiled into this posthumous album. A true pleasure to listen to and a must for every minimal synth, new wave and lo-fi Italo disco fan. Limited edition of 500 copies with double-sided insert..

Artist : Martial Canterel

Label : OnderStroom Records

austerton / LP

Much-needed re-issue of this privately released 2007 album. Martial Canterel's Sean McBride is the progenitor of American cold synth sounds of the 21st Century. He began under the moniker Moravagine before he started releasing limited edition cassettes and playing Brooklyn dives as Martial Canterel in 2002. Since then, McBride's bleak intellectual exercises in the dark and danceable have flooded North America and Europe through the frosty fairwaves paved by Pieter Schoolwerth's Wierd Records. With an inimitable minimal style merging bright, urgent melodies ornamented and punctuated by the noises of industry and McBride's sonorous, stern vocals, Martial Canterel's earlier releases (You Today, Refuge Underneath) have garnered both critical acclaim and a rapidly growing rabid fan base. Sean is also one half of the duo Xeno & Oaklander together with Miss Liz Wendelbo. The album 'Austerton' consists of some of his earliest work recorded in 2003. The 10 minimal synth songs on the LP are reminiscent of music by bands like Dark Day, Snowy Red, A Blaze Colour, League Of Nations. Through the collision of a uniquely humanistic means of production via live analogue synthcraft expertly paired with vocals and lyrics that reflect the pitfalls and pleasures of our age, Martial Canterel provides a visceral kick best felt on the dancefloor, amidst a flurry of flesh in motion. Limited edition of 1000 copies with double-sided insert !!

Artist : Ssleeping Desiress

Label : OnderStroom Records

untitled / LP

Debut album by San Francisco based producer Gabriel Ramos. While the band has gone through some lineup changes Ssleeping Desiress has essentially remained the sole recorded output of Gabriel Ramos, who has been the only constant member. The album runs the boundaries between minimal synth, coldwave, and electro with lyrical themes spanning gentrification to coping with loss. Ssleeping Desiress has certainly become a gem in the electronic underground with the only official release so far being the great 'A Voice / Sister' 7" on FlexiWave in 2012 and a handful of other songs appearing on numerous new wave compilations. The self-titled album presented here takes the project to the next level, kicking off with an echoing caterwauling drone over repetitive drums and outbursts of synths & guitars, and slowly moving towards a more darkwave sound on the 2nd half. Gabriel Ramos started making solo recordings while living in Portland, Oregon around 2005. He was inspired by the Diy drive of the city, hosting live shows at his house, (which frequently would consist of friends' bands from San Francisco) and his growing fascination and voracious consumption of music: "I can trace it back to the 1st time Spector Protector played at my house and getting a tour cassette afterwards from one of the two members, Eric Davis. That and being freshly exposed to groups like Suicide and Arthur Russell were very inspirational to begin recording music on my own, which was something I had been doing, though fairly aimlessly up to that point. In terms of sonic influences, I try and change my process as much as I can (usually through collaboration) and vary the instrumentation. My visions of songs usually end up as a clunky homage to late 70's punk rock, a marriage of dub and krautrock repetition and cavernous space". Limited to 300 copies !

the ritual

Artist : Twilight Ritual

Label : OnderStroom Records

the ritual / LP

Re-release of the 1st ever recordings by Belgian minimal synth masters Twilight Ritual. Released in 1982 in a tiny cassette edition, this album has not been heard by many people. 'The Ritual' includes some of their best work, from mysterious dark synthpopsongs "Elegy" to club music "Webb-Men" and the epic 14-minute track "Up To Now". Twilight Ritual was/is the main project by Geert Coppens and Peter Bonne. During the early 80's they were involved in many other bands including Autumn and Linear Movement (both re-released on Minimal Wave), but Twilight Ritual is by far the most inspired project. The spirit of the band lingers on beneath the work of Autumn through A Split Second and stands besides the best tracks of bands such as Oppenheimer Analysis and League Of Nations. Including double-sided insert with lyrics & photo's ;)

in the grassfield

Artist : Palais Des Bauzards

Label : OnderStroom Records

in the grassfield / LP

Palais Des Bauzards persued an industrial and electronic variant of the sound that swept into vogue during the 1st half of the 80's. This compilation digs into the original material provided by the band and offers an amazing selection from start to finish. The sometimes rudimentary though gripping tracks on the 1st side are emblematic for their early period, for example "Money" a song driven by a screeching rhythm box, distant guitar lines and a nonchalant voice. Cabaret Voltaire comes to mind. They're not afraid to experiment and to explore new horizons (the track "Lies"). The 2nd side shows a more developed darkwave sound with "In The Grassfield" and "Knowing Too Much" both produced by legendary Belgian producer Ludo Camberlin. On top of this there are 2 dark goth rock stomper hidden in the selection, they hide by the names "My Life Is A Sin" & "Eat Out Of My Hands". Overall it's a broad selection of tracks which show the capability of the band to do something different with the new wave genre. Initially the band was formed in 1983 in the Belgian city of Leuven by Danny Jacobs, Dirk Van Regenmortel, Chris Serré, Frank De Wit and Rudy Stuyckens. In 1983 they released 2 tracks on the Mask Live LP together with Front 242. In the 3 following years many of their home recorded tracks were published on a bunch of cassette labels. Since the beginning of the 21st century, many Palais Des Bauzards tracks can be found on playlists around Europe and the USA and are being reissued on LPs. Most recently on the compilation albums 'Underground Wave Vol. 4' and 'Distant Waves'. Limited edition of 500 copies

land after life

Artist : Cheiron

Label : OnderStroom Records

land after life / LP

Does the treasure chest of Lex Grauwen have a bottomless pit? After the re-discovery of Tranquil Eyes 'Walks' cassette a few years back and more recently the Frozen Ducks legacy, it's time for another dazzling project originating from the man's brain. Cheiron is Lex Grauwen, he plays all the instruments & produced all the music and José Van Waveren, who sings distinctively. The album 'Land After Life' aims for the dancefloor with it's high energy minimal synth and electro stylings. In the mid-80's Lex Grauwen was asked to participate in the 'Pas de Deux’ compilation album, a legendary new-wave compilation album featuring Bene Gesserit, Algebra Suicide & Psyclones. Lex asked high school sweetheart José Van Waveren to join up for a few songs. 'Land After Life' was chosen for the vinyl and began to lead it's own life for many years on the internet. "Serenity World", recorded during the same sessions is of an equal spellbinding beauty. It got released on the Top Tape label cassette called 'L'Embrasse' in an edited mix. The 3rd song recorded "Finally Free Four" is a José only composition, previously unreleased till now. José and Lex had been making music before though, one of those older tracks is "No Trace", from 81-82. Shortly after 'Pas de Deux', they tried to record some more tracks, but the demo's were never really finished. A while later Lex asked Paul Oosterbaan of Tranquil Eyes and Ruud Braumuller of Beatnik Love Affair to help finish these tracks. The results are "Your Life Your Body", also a José solo-piece and "Ping Pong", the last recorded track. Today José is a singer-songwriter, performing in French.. Limited to 500 copies !

progress through research

Artist : Occidental White

Label : OnderStroom Records

progress through research / 7"

2 minimal synth-pop pearls 1st released on the compilation 'Walkin' After Midnight' in 1982. They're in the same vein as early 80's singles by Carol (Breakdown) and Rive Gauche (Friends Are Friends). Both tracks on the 7" are a delightful proof of the lively and creative music scene in Brussels during the early 80's, supported by labels such as Factory Benelux and Les Disques Crépuscule and the famous venue Plan K. Occidental White was founded at same time as Kaa Antilope, the extraordinary new wave band founded by Bernard Vranckx and Frédéric Walheer. Bernadette was the additional member and took care of the vocal part. The idea was to do 'pop' songs inspired by occidental white culture, which was the opposite to Kaa Antilope which was more focused on outside inspiration. Edition of 300 copies !

fact & fiction

Artist : Tranquil Eyes

Label : OnderStroom Records

fact & fiction / LP

Tranquil Eyes is a Dutch minimal synth band formed in 1982. Lex Grauwen and Paul Oosterbaan had worked together for about 8 years before they formed the band. They decided to turn their back to stage performances and started experimenting with home-taping. Using an array of electronics, they recorded a great amount of songs and made a fine selection on 'Walks', their 1st and only release. Today, after digging into the archives, a lot of restoring, recording & re-mastering, there's 'Fact & Fiction'. The album is an extension to the 'Walks' album both in genre and in spirit. Comprising a selection of lost tracks, compilation only releases, unreleased songs and even 2 newly recorded songs, 'Fact & Fiction' gives a great view on the bands musical abilities & influences over the years. For fans of League Of Nations, Oppenheimer Analysis and Ensemble Pittoresque. Poignant & exciting synthwave songs. Drenched in an eternal 80's feel, well crafted & complete.

in silence

Artist : Fra Lippo Lippi

Label : OnderStroom Records

in silence / LP

Reissue of 'In Silence' the gloomy 1981 debut LP from this Norwegian gothic post-punk band founded in 1978. Band members were Rune Kristoffersen (guitar, bass, keyboards, piano), Per Oystein Sorensen (vocals, synthesizer, keyboards) and Morten Sjoberg (drums, keyboards). Their sound was heavily influenced by bands such as Joy Division and The Cure. In 1981 the band recorded and released 'In Silence', a hard to grasp, dark album with ominous bass lines, death-march percussion, pensive keyboards, and sinister, indecipherable vocals. The band had installed a semi-professional 4-track recording studio in a small basement. The recording of the album started in june 1981 and was not completed until 4 months later. Rune Kristoffersen: "It took a long time. Our compositions were based on the drums and the bass, which we coloured with guitars, voices and keyboards. The sound was completely natural, both concrete and abstract". On the record it was difficult to hear the vocals, as it was mixed far behind the instruments. So it was made impossible to understand the lyrics. 'In Silence' has a more unrefined sound and should have any fan of Joy Division wishing they'd heard of this band sooner. If I were to review Closer or Unknown Pleasures today, they'd obviously receive 5/5. Therefore, since Fra Lippo Lippi is so strangely similar, and 'In Silence' is almost like having a new Joy Division/New Order album, I'd be hard pressed to give it a anything less than a near perfect score. Find out for yourself what you've missed out on for the past 20 years. Wow! Released in an edition of 500.

drilling backwards

Artist : Martial Canterel

Label : OnderStroom Records

drilling backwards / LP

With the staccato surge and somber vocalizing of DAF, the distorted synthetic soundscapes of Dirk Ivens' eeriest work, and the industrial strength of The Young Gods, Martial Canterel's earliest outings are a bleak intellectual exercise in the dark and danceable. His music creates a cold atmosphere, and has an ominous melancholy feel to it. The emotional, and sometimes dark feel of the album is everything electronic new wave music should be. It's futuristic, robotic, and at the same time, nostalgic. Essential recordings by the minimal synth master of our age. Deluxe edition of 500 copies.
