rosemary / sed knife

Artist : U.S. Girls

Label : Electric Voice Records

rosemary / sed knife / 7"

Here comes U.S. Girls resurrecting puzzled memories. Nostalgia to be unsure of, or maybe days lost behind thick shadow. Something is bubbling to the surface, but why is it happening? Strange, this is innocent melody at drift on waves of tape disintegration. She's a one woman call and responder dialing up minimalist lines and beats. A loner. And of course, these 2 jams are crooned so hard and with such ease that we fall deep within the emptiness on either side. This is music with plenty of space for being dissolved, and sure, it could even be the gift of an inner door that opens on and on.. Sensual slow-burner from the avant-soul chanteuse and the first lady noise-glam: Meghan Remy. Limited edition of 300 copies on black wax.

There are some records that speak for themselves, but others, bark and bawl as if something more than your simple satisfaction was at stake. With their 1st effort as Guilt, Halifax's Matthew Grimson & Craig Leonard have assembled an astonishingly unique cycle of robust industrial music from little more than synthesizer and electronics, drum machine, and Grimson's sputtered prose-poetry. By foregrounding this last element the album aligns itself with other records that similarly privilege the demented musings of their literate masterminds such as Stephen Jesse Bernstein's 'Prison' album. Guilt conjures a more mutant music through the stretched notes, plosive bursts, and maniac cadences of Grimson's unique delivery..

electric voice compilation

electric voice compilation / 2x12"

Over the past few years Electric Voice Records has established itself as one of Canada's most forward-thinking and ambitious new labels, releasing a mountain of innovative pop music from an eccentric roster of international bands and artists. The label's grand vision is quite simply to archive the current state of affairs in the underground world of pop music. Although a bold mission, this new compilation makes huge strides towards that aim. Culled from a hopelessly jammed inbox of submissions and requests, these 18 tracks represent some of the finest jams to ever grace the Electric Voice catalogue and offer a cross section of both up and coming and established artists. The label's obsessive attention to quality means that every track is an absolute highlight, but notable contributions include "Dutch Me", a collaboration between cult bedroom wizards R.Stevie Moore & Ariel Pink, and "The Stand", a minimal synth track by 80's no-wave trailblazers Jeff & Jane Hudson. The compilation also includes a chilling track by Australian protopunks HTRK (Hate Rock Trio) which features the band's late friend and producer Rowland S. Howard of The Birthday Party on guitar. But every cut on this double LP is a winner, with new projects like Femminielli, D'Eon, Rape Faction, Soft Metals, Automelodi, Innergaze, Grand Trine, Jef Barbara, and Catbag commanding as much attention as anything else on the album. And of course, the strange, zen-like art of Adam O'Rielly and mastering work of Evan Cardwell transform this collection of great songs into a coherent piece of art. All in all, the brilliance of this compilation testifies to the unstoppable growth and focus of Electric Voice Records.

in my car / computer jungle

Artist : Jeff & Jane Hudson

Label : Electric Voice Records

in my car / computer jungle / 12"

This 12" single features 2 brand new tracks backed with alternate club mixes from classic electro-pop husband & wife duo Jeff & Jane Hudson. In 2011 Captured Tracks and Dark Entries teamed up to re-release a deluxe version of their 1983 debut LP, 'Flesh'. The new record also contained rare singles material and select tracks from 'World Trade ep' (1980). This reissue re-established Jeff & Jane as one of the most innovative and compelling bands of the 80's synth movement in America. Featuring drum machines, synthesizers and the occasional slash of guitar, they created music with both emotion & complexity. Conceived from the remains of their late 70's punk band the Rentals, the duo left Boston, for exploration in the New-York no wave scene in 1980. They hold the honour of opening for bands like PIL, Suicide, Siouxie & the Banshees, Duran Duran, Fad Gadget, Lydia Lunch and Sonic Youth. After 30 years, the married artists are still together happily making music. They currently teach video at the Mass MoCA and manage a vintage art & deco store on campus. 1st pressing limited to 500 coloured vinyl. Original artwork by Jeff Hudson !

Artist : Martial Canterel

Label : Electric Voice Records

navigations / LP

Martial Canterel's Sean McBride began producing minimal dance music on analog synthezisers in 2002. His unique sound would go on to shape the cold wave/minimal-electronic movement of the last decade, but despite his influence, Sean’s work stands apart from the genres he has created. Instead of looking to any scene aesthetic, McBride has always turned inward, focusing on craft, process, and composition. 'Navigations Vol. 1' returns to those early days to chronicle sketches, unfinished works, and forgotten tracks. In this material we hear a pioneering artist draft the blueprint for what would become 21st century synth music. Excellent !

Artist : Philippe Laurent / HNN

Label : Electric Voice Records

split / 12"

Multi-media artist Philippe Laurent, well known for his 'Hot-Bip' project excavated by Minimal Wave in 2011, is paired with contemporary minimal electronic mastermind HNN on this maxi 12" split single. Laurent's side was originally released in 1982 on the rare K7 Kunstaustellung which has seen a meticulous remaster from our mastering house Polyphasic Studios. "Exposition 1" translates Laurent's precision with his design work into a symmetrical and well balanced sound for his time. Another French composer, Gregg Anthe, is featured on the flip side with a collaboration with Electric Voice artists' and friends Jeff & Jane Hudson. They offer an invaluable musical score to the politics of the world we live in. Limited to 500 copies..

surlendemains acides

Artist : Automelodi

Label : Electric Voice Records

surlendemains acides / LP

'Surlendemains Acides' is the 2nd full length from Xavier Paradis' project Automelodi. As with Automelodi's past efforts, this sophomore LP does offer a nod to obscure 80/90's European electronic music—artists such as Trisomie 21 and Grauzone among others—but the main focus of the arrangements, melodies and production on 'Surlendemains Acides' is to frame and carry the album's very dense and personal lyrical universe: a bittersweet, angular path, haunted by shades of anxiety and disenchantment. These themes translate especially well through Paradis' cold, yet shimmering French vocals, to create a listening experience with both unusual depth and levity. As Paradis clearly moves towards straightforward songcraft on this latest effort, the Automelodi project is elevated beyond a brilliant work of post modern electronic music to become a true stand-out within the broader context of popular music.
