matter / LP+7"

Lassigue Bendthaus is the electro-industrial project of Uwe Schmidt (aka Atom or Seńor Coconut) from Germany. Uwe Schmidt began making music in the early 80's, 1st playing drums, then switching to programming a drum computer after he had heard a Linn Drum on the radio. In 1986 he co-founded the cassette label N.G. Medien, on which his 1st musical work under the name Lassigue Bendthaus, 'The Engineer's Love', was released. Soon after, he started to work on what would become his 1st official record release, the album 'Matter'. The recordings and production began in 1986 and took almost 4 years, until the album finally came out in 1991 on the German Parade Amoureuse label. Musically somewhere between late industrial and EBM, yet already anticipating acid and techno, this production managed to cause quite a stir, due to its advanced production techniques. Songs pay strong homage to Kraftwerk, approaching the early industrial dance scene with a softer sequential approach than most of his contemporaries. 'Matter' is a hermetic reflection about the relationship between perception, nature, science, technology and labor. This reissue comprises the entire 1991 'Matter' LP, as well a bonus 7" record containing 2 tracks never before released on vinyl. The vinyl is housed in a jacket featuring the photographic traces of a high-energy photon hitting a proton. Each LP includes a 2-sided insert with original album reviews, press clippings, liner notes by Atom and photos..

Re-issue of the debut album by Eleven Pond. Long sought after by collectors, the Rochester, NY band only released a single lp in their time together before dissolving into obscurity. Their sound (a merging of post punk’s dark dance and synthpop’s melodic arrangements), reflected the originality of gifted songwriters who met in art school with a shared interest in 4AD and Factory Records. The recordings on this release comprise the band’s entire recorded output and the lp includes an original insert including photos, lyrics and liner notes. Eleven Pond officially parted ways in 1987 but nearly a quarter-century later these recordings prove how vital they remain. Must Have Repress edition !!!

early tapes / LP

Dark Entries has dug deep into the early days of the Belgian cassette scene to release 2 tapes by The Neon Judgment in the form of a vinyl lp for the 1st time ever ! These pioneers of underground electronic music hail from the small town of Leuven near Brussels, and gave birth to the new-beat and EBM scenes worldwide in 1981-82 with the release of their 1st 2 cassettes–neatly compiled here as "Early Tapes". Always a consistent duo of Dirk Da Davo (synthesizers, vocals) and TB Frank (guitar, drum machine, vocals), The Neon Judgment worked in a parallel world alongside Suicide, Cabaret Voltaire.. Arriving just in time to celebrate The Neon Judgment’s 30th anniversary, "Early Tapes" showcases the band’s brash and seedy lyrics, with raw synth stabs and repetitive drum machine beats adding to this rhythmic discourse. The result is a combination of lo-fi technology and emotional sincerity to create a sound both warm yet alienating that has stood the test of time and 30 years later, still evokes the same magic. The 10 songs on this lp were remastered from the original cassette masters resulting in a cohesive, gritty, maniacal dance program that sounds more relevant today than ever. 2nd edition with different colored sleeve (neon blue instead of neon red) and 2nd edition on label, limited edition of 500 copies..

electromagnetic pulse / LP

Dark Entries celebrates its 1 year anniversary with this beautiful release. Those Attractive Magnets were created early 1980 in a town called Tamworth as a vehicle for Rikk Quay (keyboards) and Andy Baldwin (vocals). They self-released a super limited cassette ep, "Pictures On The Wall" in 1980 and the "Nightlife / Love Chimes" 7″ in 1983 and appeared on a futurist music compilation lp, "Synthetic Romance" in 1982. Their music travels beyond copycat synth-pop bands of the time into electronic realms of the 80's underground scene. There are some obvious parallels of the time (you can hear the commercial strains of The Human League, Soft Cell and Kraftwerk at times), but the band never wholly embraced commercialism as these tracks reveal. Although their sound takes a cue from the post-punk and early new romantic scenes, it still remains one step ahead in a unique futuristic world full of delicious dance beats ! "Electromagnetic Pulse" is the 1st ever compilation of a number of tapes produced during their 3 creative and prolific years of song writing, 1980-1983. Limited to 500 hand-numbered copies with poster & insert of lyrics, photos and liner notes. Simply Essential ;)

Death Domain (aka Adam Stroupe) is a science nerd from Baltimore and wears it as a badge of honor. His sound is undoubtedly one of the most bewildering, disorienting yet magnetic and infectious slices of downright bleak takes on synth-based dance music. A one man all-live-analogue electronic ice machine (who is also behind the likes of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). His sound is as cryptically raw as it gets; summoning the seminal industrial / EBM sounds of the likes of early Cabaret Voltaire, Skinny Puppy, and The Normal. Repress edition. Tip !!!

heute / 12"

Zwischenfall formed in 1982 with Michael Sass (synths), Martin Urban (bass/vocals) and Stephan Kraemer (guitar/drums); all of German descent. They were united by musical sensibilities that combined electronic and traditional instruments developing the basis for their 1982 demo recordings. By chance Patrick Codenys of the Belgian electro pioneers Front 242 heard 2 songs and decided to record a 4-song ep for the electro band’s newly formed label Mask. The "Heute" ep was released in 1983 after a week of recording in Front’s private studio under the direction of sound-whiz Daniel B. Bearing in mind Midi had not been invented at the time, the recording involved some extensive sound sculpting including the use of individual synths for separate drum sounds. To create an organic feel to the combination of acoustic and electric guitar, a trumpet and a bass were incorporated into the electronic arrangements. Sonically way ahead of their time, Zwischenfall have a distinct sound with hard rhythms and melancholic melodies that blend minimal yet catchy electronics to create a very danceable production. The ep also features 2 bonus tracks from the "Heute" sessions never before released on vinyl : the uptempo "Tausend Jahre" and "Katastrophe" the demo version of "Flucht". 2016 repress version including 11x11 cardstock lyrics/artwork sheet..

window / LP

Following the 1st few incarnations and various lineups of Dark Day; 1981 saw the direction of the project morphed into an electronic keyboard duo of Robin Crutchfield and Bill Sack with an album of 9 songs originally released on Plexus Records. Lyrics were inspired by various sources including occult texts by Colin Wilson and art by Leger, Bruegel, Malevich, Man Ray, Duchamp and Jean Cocteau. The mechanized sound of "Window" is less one of the man machine robots in charge of Kraftwerk than man at the mercy of his machines. The infectiously-engaging toy-like instruments captured the ears of fans worldwide with popcorn drum rhythms. A Synare borrowed from Jeff and Jane Hudson lent a "Bette Davis Eyes" homage and crack to the percussion on the percolating tracks. The instant polaroid images, an homage to Japanese recording artist Susan of "The Girl Can’t Help It" adorned the album sleeve in 2 stark headshots of musicians at work, haunted by the unseen. Is the window something you look out, or in? You must answer that question.. 3rd repress edition release!

years of struggle against the lies, the stupidity and the cowardice / LP

29-year old lost album now available for the first time on vinyl. "Years Of Struggle Against The Lies, The Stupidity And The Cowardice" was written, recorded and produced by a trio of Danish 18-year olds during a weekend in December 1981. Unable to pay for the recording session, the master tapes were confiscated and the album remained unreleased until the summer of 1985 where it was issued as a bonus cassette with the Danish art magazine Atlas. This is the 1st and only album from Pesteg Dred. The band combines dark rumbling basslines with austere guitar shrieks and the occasional cello/violin/autoharp to create the perfect tension of soft/loud synthesized post-punk. But what steals the spotlight of Martin Hall’s well-crafted production are the dynamic vocals of Inge Shannon who ranges from cold Teutonic monotone to shrill cacophony at times bringing to mind Nico, new romantic chanteuse Ronny or Simona Buja from Kirlian Camera. This landmark album could have fit perfectly on the 4AD or Factory Records roster alongside A Certain Ratio, Bauhaus or Joy Division. All tracks have been remastered from the original master tapes and include a printed interview with Martin Hall as well as a silk-screened image of the original reel to reel master tape. Limited to 500 hand-numbered copies, so grab one while you can...

sacred islands of the mad / LP

Highly limited 2nd cassette by British duo Nagamatzu for the first time ever on vinyl. "Sacred Islands Of The Mad" is a collection of 11 tracks recorded between december 1984 and march 1986 in London by Andrew Lagowski on synths, guitar, and drum machines & Stephen Jarvis on synths, bass and programming. Nagamatzu began in 1982 after messing around with old tape machines and drum boxes, making numerous contributions to international compilations and erratically releasing their own cassettes. Their music reflects his influence and incorporates carefully chosen samples from the Challenger shuttle disaster, Gregorian chants and films including "Dawn Of The Dead" and "The Omen". All the songs were recorded onto a Ferrograph reel to reel in a small room at their parent's house and some of the backing rhythms and sequencers were recorded 1st onto cassette and then the band played along live. Nagamatzu’s instrumentals combine stuttering bass, guitar bursts and funeral keyboards draped over a dragging drum machine beat, calling to mind Clock DVA, Cabaret Voltaire and early New Order or Cocteau Twins. "Sacred Islands Of The Mad" is a complex, textured tapestry of sound full of dark electronics, fresh harmonies and danceable rhythms. All songs have been remastered especially for vinyl from the original cassette masters. Limited to 500 hand-numbered copies and including a newsprint zine full of fliers, gig tickets, ads, and photos.. Essential archive ;)

split / LP

This split lp combines 2 7″s from the Danish bands End Of Your Garden and De Mĺ Vćre Belgiere originally released on the Replik Muzick record label in 1981/83. End Of Your Garden were a trio from Haderslev who took their name from the Joy Division song "Eternal". Inspired after reading an NME review of the 1st Young Marble Giants release, the band formed in late 1980. Using a Diy mentality, they employed a sparse, simple sound built around synthesizer, rhythm box, bass, guitar and violin, which set them apart from their contemporaries. The recording for the "Celebration" 7″ took place during one weekend in the summer of 1981 with producer Ingolf Brown of Danish synth-pop band Moral. The 4 songs on the "Celebration" 7″ showed the diverse range this band covered during their short life. After recording the "Test" 7″ in 1982 the band broke up and members went on to form Tristan T. De Mĺ Vćre Belgiere were a 4-piece from Aarhus formed in 1982. Their sole release was a 7″ recorded in february 1983 and the music was a product of the Factory Records post-punk sound conveying a melancholic and mournful mood. The band played guitar, bass, drums, sang in their native language of Danish and shared a love for Echo and the Bunnymen, Josef K., The Cure and Joy Division. Sadly the group broke up in 1984 after a handful of live shows. All songs were remastered from the original reel to reel tapes by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each lp includes a lyric sheet with unreleased photos of each band and is limited to 500 hand-numbered copies..!

ljubav je hladnija od smrti / LP

Borghesia is an electronic music group from Ljubljana (Slovenia), created in 1982 by Aldo Ivancic and Dario Seraval who were members of the alternative theater troupe FV-112/15. Along with Laibach, Borghesia is the most successful band from the territory of former Yugoslavia who launched the activist movement and managed to turn sexual freedom into an important political issue by creating the New Slovenian Art scene. After 2 cassette-only releases the band recorded their debut vinyl lp "Ljubav Je Hladnija Od Smrti" ("Love Is Colder Than Death") during the winter of 1983-84. The band was eager to use early sampling techniques to construct tracks from cut up radio noises and movie dialogue. They developed their own brand of EBM that combined symphonic synthesizers (Korg PolySix), funky basslines, military drum beats (Roland TR-808) and harsh, crisp sequenced rhythms that repeat in trance-like loops (Roland TB-303). All songs are sung/recited in Croatian and use the imagery of the prohibited, tabooed and repressed. Equal parts Chris & Cosey, Cabaret Voltaire, Art of Noise and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. All tracks have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studio in Berkeley. Pressed on blood red vinyl, each disc is manufactured with its own unique pattern: no 2 discs are identical. Each lp is housed in an exact replica of the original large 6-panel fold out poster with lyrics and photos. Limited to 1000 hand-numbered copies !

la ůltima emoción / LP

Europa was a short-lived synth-pop group from Valencia, Spain formed in 1980 by Julio 'Nexus' Pastor (synthesizers), Alfonso Aguado (vocals, guitar), Lino Oviańo (vocals, drum machine), and José Luis Macias (synthesizers). The quartet championed the use of synthesizers, drum machines and other polyphonic gadgets in a city that was stuck in the throws of progressive rock. They recorded and released their only album 'La Última Emoción' in 1981 on cassette, released by DAI (Division Avanzada Independiente) a label interested in bands "capable of building electronic sounds from drum machines, sequencers, synths and effects, rather than conventional instruments like guitars and basses". The original issue of 'La Última Emoción' was limited to 500 copies. As part of the Spanish techno-pop movement of the 80's, Europa's songs featured arpeggiated synthesizers and upbeat drum machines that flashback to the sound of Vince Clarke's Depeche Mode days. Comparisons could be made to other Spanish techno-pop bands like Aviador Dro, Vocoder or Metal y Ca but Europa weaved a unique style of driving, energetic rhythms, bouncy keyboards and soaring vocals perfect for dancing or speeding into outer space. In 2010 the original Europa line-up reformed to play a few select live shows celebrating the re-issue of their 1984 cassette 'Máquinas Románticas' on Turia Records. Their sound remains clean, rhythmic and futuristically strange, transporting crowds to another dimension. Each LP includes an 8-page booklet originally housed in the 1981 cassette long-box complete with bi-lingual liner notes, lyrics and photos. 30 years later the futuristic sounds of Europa are ready to usher in another new wave. Just thank you!

Group: Xex ultimately plays out like some strange cry from the distant past, or alternately, a document sent back to us from some very bizarre future. Alternating male and female vocals chant some of the most strangely humorous lyrics over the 12 tracks, as synthesizers buzz and twinkle over metronomic drumbeats. This is some of the most minimal of all minimal synth records (there's no dancefloor fillers here), yet fans of bands like Crash Course in Science, Ceramic Hello, Experimental Products, or even Devo enthusiasts wondering what all this minimal synth hubbub is about will find a lot to love here. The design is a fantastic reproduction of the original Lp, and the album comes with an awesome 'zine packed full of photos and information about Xex. A really stellar reissue!

exterminating angel / LP

Huge reissue of Dark Day's 1st album 'Exterminating Angel' originally released in 1980 on Lust/Unlust. Dark Day is the minimal electronics brainchild of Robin Crutchfield following his separation with no-wave band DNA. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, Crutchfield was fascinated with both performance art and the most esoteric edges of pop music. After making his escape to New York City in the mid-70's, he was inspired by Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band and Lydia Lunch's Teenage Jesus & The Jerks. He made the transition into the new music of downtown Manhattan and formed the no-wave band DNA with Arto Lindsay and Ikue Mori in 1977. In 1979 Crutchfield left DNA to pursue a series of musical projects under the name Dark Day. His 1st album, 'Exterminating Angel' is named after the Luis Bunuel film of the same name. All 13 songs on this LP use cheap synthesizers to create cyclical, machine-like keyboard riffs as a foundation for the moody, Teutonic music. Crutchfield sings like a lost member of Kraftwerk with a dry detachment creating a starker and chillier atmosphere. Lyrics were derived from cut-up methods similar to those used by the surrealists, fluxus artists, and William Burroughs and Bryon Gysin and pit the subjected against their torments and tormentors. All songs on 'Exterminating Angel' were originally recorded at Sorcerer Sound, NYC. 1979 and produced by Charles Ball. Each LP includes a two-sided fold out poster containing lyrics, photos and lyrical explanations by Robin Crutchfield. Dark Day continue to inspire the current wave of stark, eerie, processional synthesizer music more than 30 years later. Must-Have!

bay area retrograde (BART) vol 1 / LP

'Bay Area Retrograde (BART) Volume 1' is Dark Entries' 1st compilation of underground music from San Francisco (and the greater Bay Area) in the 80's. Towards the end of the 70's, San Francisco experimental music clashed with the aftermath of punk and gave birth to a vibrant underground scene. By the early to mid 80's the Diy music scene of the Bay Area was a hotbed for experimental and quirky new-wave, post-punk, and synth-pop, quite similar to New York's no-wave scene and Berlin's NDW. This compilation literally connects the (transit) lines between these varied musical offerings and tells the secret story of 11 forgotten Bay Area bands and contains four previously unreleased tracks on vinyl, until now! Superb..

demos vol. 1 / LP

Dark Entries digs deep into the UK goth underground to unearth The Danse Society 'Demos Vol. 1'. The band formed in Barnsley (England) in 1980 from the remnants of local post-punk bands Y? and Lips-X. Between 1980 and 1982 the band released a handful of 7" and 12" ep's and the debut album 'Seduction' on their own independent label, Society Records. 1983 was The Danse Society’s year. Playing sold out tours and the success of 'Seduction' won them a recording contract with Arista Records. Spending their advance on new equipment the band recorded an album's worth of demos in one day at Greenhouse Studios, London in May 1983. The line-up for this session was Steve Rawlings (vocals), Paul Nash (guitar), Lyndon Scarfe (keyboards), Tim Wright (bass) and Paul Gilmartin (drums). Doom laden guitar riffs, swirling synthesizers, crushing drums, driving and disembodied vocals, characterize the distinctive Society sound. 'Demos Vol. 1' is the closest you'll get to The Danse Society live experience. You can almost taste the dry ice, feel the power coming through the monitors, and become entranced by the strobe-induced madness this album embodies. The Danse Society operate in a raw, atmospheric realm less campy than many of their goth rock peers, unconcerned with pop charts or commercial appeal. These aren't songs, they are commands. This 11 track collection includes an early version of the single "Wake Up", 5 demos that would make the cut for "Heaven Is Waiting", 3 songs that would later become B-sides and 2 unreleased instrumentals. Each LP includes a fold-out, double-sided newsprint poster with photos, lyrics and liner notes. 28 years later these demos capture a band at the height of their confident, powerful and haunting glory. Raw ;)

against the rule / 2x12"

Vita Noctis were a trio formed in 1983 in Vilvoorde (Belgium), and inspired by the post-punk movement. More "arthouse" than "goth", Vita Noctis blend the sneering attitude of punk with the spartan structures of minimal electronics. The band had more in common with the early electronic Sheffield scene of Cabaret Voltaire, Vice Versa or early Human League than their Belgian contemporaries. Urgent vocals go from a whisper to a scream in seconds and sound restless, bored and irritated all at once. Fuzzy guitar, simple baselines and crude electronics take turns accompanying the dynamic vocal styling. While lyrics tackle weighty topics like death and religion, the landscape they paint is a playfully bratty as it is grim. Each double LP comes in a gatefold jacket with cover art. Spanning 3 years and 4 recording sessions 'Against The Rule' is the soundtrack to Armageddon, very fitting in the contemporary climate of dissatisfaction and social upheavel. Beware, this is abrasive, primal music made by irritated teenagers full of angst !!

flesh / 2x12"

Dark Entries & Captured Tracks have teamed up to re-issue this gold gem from the 80's, in a deluxe edition remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley directly from the original master tapes. Lp 1 is the 'Flesh' Lp and Lp 2 features the "No Clubs" and "Special World" singles plus the 'World Trade' ep. Jeff & Jane Hudson are a husband/wife duo from Boston who got their start in the art punk band The Rentals in 1977. The Rentals broke up in 1980 and Jeff & Jane relocated to Manhattan where they opened for Suicide and quickly signed with no-wave label Lust/Unlust. Their 1st single "No Clubs" was released in late 1980 and showcased a lo-fi avant garde all synthesizer band. The 'World Trade' ep came next in 1981, expanding their brand of post-nuclear electronic pop. Their vocals qualities were distinct; Jeff quivery and drug-addled while Jane more detached and icy. The duo reached their pinnacle with 1982′s seminal 'Flesh' Lp. Perhaps one of the US biggest achievements in the entire synth movement of the 80's. The music was electro-pop with Jeff's lyrics flirted with technology and politics, while Jane wrote about cultural and psychological situations. Completely self produced by the band, the record has since been oft-cited as a groundbreaking and pivotal Lp of the post-punk era, who's original copies are now heavily coveted by collectors. Completing the discography is the 'Special World' 7" released in 1983 before the band emigrated back to Boston and stopped recording and performing. Each double Lp set comes in a gatefold sleeve with unreleased photos, original artwork and a lyrics sheet. Masterpiece !!

System Liliputt was the solo project of Geir Vasseng from the Stavanger area of Norway in the early 80's. He released one cassette, 'Harpa' a mini-album of 6 songs in feburary 1984 on his own label Geva Tapes & Studio that was limited to 150 copies. 27 years later Dark Entries has baked and transferred the original master tapes, adding 5 bonus tracks, restoring this lost piece of Norsk diy dark post-punk. 'Harpa', in its entirety and all the demos were recorded in Geir's home studio from November 1982 to September 1983. All tracks were written, produced, recorded and performed by Geir without the involvement of any others. Influenced by the darker/melodic post-punk bands Young Marble Giants, Fra Lippo Lippi and Seventeen Seconds/Faith era Cure, System Liliputt created rich atmospheres with intricate guitar work, ethereal synths and sombre vocals. Whereas the original 6 'Harpa' songs capture a brooding and downbeat feel the demos showcase Vasseng’s ability to write a catchy, wistful pop song with minimally treated instruments. Phewww.. All tracks have been carefully remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley for the first time on vinyl. The original cassette included six inlay cards with lyrics which are re-printed here along with English translations by Geir’s son! Another piece of Norway’s rich post-punk past is ready for your ears.

Debut ep 'Vehicle' from San Francisco synth trio Inhalt. For the purposes of this recording, Inhalt are Matia Simovich, Bryan Gibbs & Philip Winiger. On this ep many of the analogue synthesizers and drum machines Inhalt collects were used: Juno 60, Roland Jupiter 6, Roland TR 808. The powerful synth leads are influenced by Moroder and Jarre. The A-side features 2 vocal tracks "Vehicle" and "Walking On Glass" while the B-side showcases the instrumental versions "Fahrzeug" and "Hart's Theme". The A-side is heavily indebted to 80's dark synth tracks and use very dense production, big snares and powerful German vocals. On the B-side both instrumental tracks also work as Belgian new-beat style jams when slowed down from 45rpm to 33rpm and pitched up +8. see you sioux / LP

'See You Sioux' cassette by Buzz for the 1st time ever on vinyl. Buzz began as the brainchild of J-C Van Thienen in Lille (France). He released 1 album in 1985, the highly limited demo cassette 'See You Sioux'. In the late 70's and early 80's J-C witnessed the punk explosion while studying and working abroad in England. He regularly attended concerts by Adam and the Antz, The Sound, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Ski Patrol, Spizzenergi, The Cure, interviewing the bands for a fanzine. Returning to France, and feeling inspired, J-C bought a Soundmaster drum machine and 2 2nd-hand synthesizers in 1983. He started composing songs applying the Diy punk ethos akin to Cabaret Voltaire and Fad Gadget, who like him were eccentrics in a pop-rock world. Borrowing a 4-track Portastudio from a friend, J-C recorded 7 songs that would become the skeletons for this album recorded in one take. Buzz combined new-wave dancefloor appeal with the abrasive textures and irreverent attitude of post-punk. The overall sound fits nicely beside their French contemporaries: Opera Multi Steel, Norma Loy, Little Nemo, Taxi Girl, but is more aligned with their Belgian neighbors the Neon Judgement and Trisomie 21. The success of 'See You Sioux' landed Buzz a deal with Danceteria Records, who would release 4 maxi 12" singles from 1986-1989. Around 1990 Buzz took a break, eventually restarting in 2005 with the release of a career spanning compilation and remix album. J-C continues to write and release music today with his project Vuduvox. Each Lp includes a fold-out, double-sided insert with photos, lyrics and liner notes by Anne Clark. 27 years later these demos provide a glimpse of the bleak post-industrial European wasteland as seen from the bedroom window during the French coldwave scene..

thought noises / LP

Here is the underground Belgian new-wave pioneers, Sic, with the career-spanning release 'Thought Noises'. Sic were a post-punk band from the industrial city of Charleroi (Belgium). They were formed by Francis Pourcel, Alain Neffe (aka Bene Gesserit), Micheline Dufert & Mario Berchicci in 1977. Francis and Alain had previously played with krautrock band Kosmose in the mid 70's. In 1978 Alain left the group to launch the cassette label Insane Music. The new trio released their debut 7" 'Voltage Control' in 1979 on Artibano Records. By 1980 Mario left and was replaced by a Korg KR-55 drum machine. As a duo, Sic self-released the "Cover Girls Smile / Between" 7" in 1980, which was played by John Peel on Radio 1 in London. In 1981 their final 7" single, "Free Radio Stations" was self-released and the band recorded a demo tape to help secure live gigs. Sic continued to play live over the next 2 year but eventually broke up in 1983. Sic stray from more conventional post-punk, mixing the affordable Korg MS-20 and Roland RS-09 synthesizers with jazz and funk elements. 'Thought Noises' compiles all 3 Sic 7" singles released from 1979 to 1981, plus 6 unreleased demos from a 1981 recording session. Each Lp includes a lyric sheet insert. More than 30 years later, Sic are a document of a mutant strain of new-wave ripe for discovery..

cuadro sinóptico / 12"

A 4-song compilation from one of the finest groups of the Spanish new-wave/techno-pop scene of the 80's: Vocoder. Keyboardists Antonio Laval, Alfonso Olarte, Antonio Tenas met while attending university, and were later joined by vocalist Pilar Pellicer. They recorded several demos with synthesizers, sequencers and drum machines, creating a soundtrack for the clubs and dancefloors. After sending demos to various record companies, they signed a deal with Aviador Dro's sublabel Neón Danza and released 2 ep's, 'What Happens Now / Radio' in 1984, "Mindanao / Amor de Robot' in 1985 and a self-titled lp which was produced by Michel Huygen (Neuronium) in 1987. 'Cuadro Sinóptico' compiles both 2-song 12" maxi singles as one 4-song ep. All 4 songs were recorded during 1984-85 using the most advanced and sophisticated techniques of time in digital recording and Direct Metal Mastering (DMM). Genuinely catchy, Vocoder combined soaring melodies with cybernetic coldness. A futuristic sound for the modern age topped with Pilar's charismatic vocals. Lyrically they address robotic love, disco dancing, and the tropical island of Mindanao, and sing in Spanish, English and French. Each LP includes a double-sided insert with photos, lyrics and liner notes by Flemming Dalum, a Danish Dj who introduced much of the world to Vocoder in 2008 on his 'French Spanish Italo Connection' mix. Vocoder want you to barricade yourself in the discotheques and dance away the depression !!!

jazz' mad / LP

ADN' Ckrystall is the moniker of synthesizer wizard Érick Moncollin from Tarbes, France. In 1977 Moncollin spent time in Paris experimenting with synthesizers, jamming alongside composers Vangelis and Tim Blake. It was here that he obtained a prototype of the Korg MS-20, a legendary synthesizer. While attending art school in Toulouse, Érick met Benoit Hutin, who offered a studio for the recording of the 'Jazz' Mad' album. The entire album was recorded over a 4 day period in 1980. The sound of 'Jazz' Mad' revolves around the synthesizer, utilizing the instrument to all its capacities. ADN was Influenced by new-wave bands that incorporated keyboards into their songs like Gary Numan/Tubeway Army, and Simple Minds, as well as prog-rock and krautrock bands such as Hawkwind, Heldon, Gong, and Neu!. The result is an unconventional and discordant conglomeration of synthesizers, drum machines, and vocals that cradle the edge of the brain. Most of the songs are long instrumental pieces but when Érick sings his lyrics favor love, drugs, and science fiction themes. Each LP comes in an exact replica of the original jacket with paintings and illustrations designed by the band. This 30th anniversary edition also includes a zine filled with unreleased photos, original artwork and lyrics. We all are made of ADN' Ckrystall ;)

X-Ray Pop are the synth-pop duo of Doc Pilot and Zouka Dzaza from Tours, France. They got their start in the no-wave art group Bocal 5 in 1981 and split off in 1984 to focus on their own brand of quirky synthesized electronics. Influenced by Erik Satie, Brigitte Bardot, Suicide and Young Marble Giants, they call their music 'minimum naive new-wave'. Armed with a Casio PT-20 keyboard and a rudimentary Yamaha MR10 drum machine they recorded their demo cassette and 1st 7" "Eurasienne / La Machine ŕ Ręver" in 1984. Upgrading their synthesizers and adding some saxophone and guitar, they recorded the "Alcool / Amazone" 7" in 1985 and the "DS / El Gato" 7" in 1986. "The Dream Machine" collects X-Ray Pop's 1st 3 7" singles plus 8 songs from their demo cassette, never released on vinyl before. Their songs are short, concise and well structured; richly textured, moving at a quick speed with hardly a pause. The demos show a sense of humor, vitality and carefree playfulness. Zouka's pouting, tongue-in-cheek vocals (sung in French) come together for a catchy, sensuous, danceable, eccentric psychedelic ride. Reminiscent of the Mo-dettes, early OMD or Algebra Suicide, X-Ray Pop could be the missing link to Stereolab. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley directly from the original master tapes. Each LP comes in a neon yellow jacket with an 8 page booklet full of unreleased photos, original artwork and lyrics. 28 years later, this is the first time since the original issue that the songs of X-Ray Pop are reappearing on vinyl again, but is the world ready ?

Altres are a band from Dundee, Scotland who originally formed in 1983. They were playing mostly instrumental, improvised electronic music at a time when very few bands, if any, were making this type of music in the UK. The Altres' initial line-up was Jeremy Bryning (synths), Joseph Donnelly (synths), Kevin L. Guthrie (synths, sequencer, drum machine), Brian Hutton (synths, sequencer, vocoder), Mike Nelson (guitar) and Maurice Richardson (synths, sequencer, polysynth, drum machine). The band's influences included Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Philip Glass, Throbbing Gristle, Faust and many others, but their sound is clearly their own. After a few months of recording the band had a lot of material on tape, so they decided to release their 1st cassette 'Rise' in 1984. Within that year the band managed to release 4 more cassettes: 'Live At The Tayside Bar', 'Archive One', 'Archive 2' and 'Angel Chords & Devil Chords'. The 'best' tracks from each of the cassettes have been chosen for this special 7 song compilation album entitled 'Archives'. Most Altres compositions begin with a sequence and a drum pattern. These wrap around arpeggiated synth pulses, and are accompanied by shrill feedback. Instruments used on the recordings include Casio MT40 Moog Prodigy, EDP Wasp, Roland SH-101, Casio VL-Tone, Korg MS20, MS50, SQ10 Poly-61, Ibanez guitar and vocoder. All of the instruments are fed through various effects and echo units. Everything is played and recorded live – there are no overdubs. The vinyl comes housed in a neon green jacket featuring the original design from the 'Rise' cassette by Mike Nelson. Each LP includes a photocopied clear acetate with notes from the band for each song. Prepare to get lost in the majestic, melancholic and melodic world of Altres.

The Product were a duo from the small villages Kvistgaard and Espergaerde, in the north of Denmark. Dan Stielow Mortazavi wrote the lyrics and sang while Kenneth Neuhaus composed the music and played the instruments. They met in the autumn of 1982 and recorded their sole album 'Alive Again' over a weekend. It was self-released on cassette in 1983 and limited to 50 copies. 'Alive Again' features 11 songs recorded in 2 short live takes directly onto one cassette. The Product employed a basic set up of Micromoog, Roland JX-3P and TR-606 Drumatix. 9 of the songs employ only these 2 synthesizers and drum machine while 2 songs feature a guest bassist. With these 3 instruments they crafted melodic, icy electronic rhythms with detached vocals. They were influenced by UK post-punk bands Second Layer, This Heat, Wire, Gary Numan, Fad Gadget and most noticeably The Cure's 'Pornography' and 'Faith' albums. Lyrics revolve around growing up in broken homes, alienation and romance. The vinyl comes housed in a jacket with original cassette cover art by Jesper Rask as well as an insert with lyrics and photos. This the 1st time since the original cassette issues that the music of The Product is appearing on vinyl format . 'Alive Again' is a sneak peak into the world of Danish post punk bedroom cassettes.

cassette pets / 2x12"

Dark Entries has dug deep in the New Jersey basement of Smersh to release the 2xLP compilation 'Cassette Pets'. Smersh was the duo of Mike Mangino and Chris Shepard, who started writing music together in the late 70's. They were uninterested in traditional notions of songwriting or live performance. Everything they needed was in Piscataway NJ: a basement full of musical toys and instruments, novelty space microphones, a TR-606, a SH-09, and a couple of tape recorders. Most Monday nights, they would write a new song from scratch. A couple hours later, the song was recorded, never to be performed again. By 1981, this dedication to spontaneous creativity had already produced countless recordings, and the duo began releasing cassettes as Smersh via their own Atlas King label. A definitive Smersh discography may not even be possible, but one lists more than 30 Atlas King cassettes. As these tapes traded their way across continents, Smersh developed a devoted following in places far beyond Piscataway, leading to releases on dozens of other labels from around the globe. For 'Cassette Pets' 17 songs have been selected, featuring some of the many highlights from Smersh's vast discography, spanning 1981-1994. Smersh's sound is a lush hybrid of techno, industrial, dance, and experimental. Sometimes easy, sometime not. Most songs revolve around driving EBM style beats, intricate industrial noise manipulation and synth melodies. The Smersh sound has so many faces it doesn't fall into any one category. The vinyl comes housed in a deluxe gatefold jacket with original drawings by Mike Mangino, lyrics and photos. 'Cassette Pets' is a sneak peak into the subversive world of New Jersey's isolated, prolific legends of the cassette underground. Fat!!

school daze / 2x12"

Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem have teamed up to release the gay porn soundtrack work of San Francisco-based musician and producer, Patrick Cowley. Perhaps one of the most revolutionary and influential people in the cannon of disco music, Cowley created his own brand of hi-nrg dance music coined the San Francisco sound. Born in Buffalo, NY on october 19, 1950, Patrick moved to San Francisco at the age of 21. He studied at the City College of San Francisco where he founded the Electronic Music Lab. During this time Patrick would create radio jingles and electronic pieces using the school's equipment, 1st a Putney, then an E-MU System and finally a Serge synthesizer. He would make experimental instrumental songs by blending various types of music and adapting them to the synthesizer. By the mid-70's, Patrick's synthesizer skills landed him a job composing and producing songs for disco superstar Sylvester such as "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)", "Dance Disco Heat" and "Stars". This helped Patrick obtain more work as a remixer and producer. Of particular note was his 18-minute long remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" and production work with edgy new-wave band Indoor Life. By 1981 Patrick released a string of dance 12″ singles, like "Menergy" and "Megatron Man", creating the soundtrack for a generation. Also that year, he founded Megatone Records and released his debut album. Around this time Patrick was hospitalized and diagnosed with a then-unknown illness: that would later be called AIDS. Prior to his passing on november 12, 1982, he recorded 2 more hi-nrg hits, "Do You Wanna Funk" for Sylvester and "Right On Target" for Paul Parker. In 1981 Patrick was contacted by John Coletti, owner of famed gay porn company Fox Studio in Los Angeles. John had heard about Patrick's music from the legendary Sylvester and proposed he write music for his films. Patrick jumped on this offer and sent reels of his college compositions from the 70's to John in LA. Coletti then used a variable speed oscillator to adjust the pitch and speed of Patrick's songs in-sync with the film scene. 'School Daze' is a collection of Cowley's instrumental songs recorded between 1973 and 1981 found in the Fox Studio vaults. Influenced by Tomita, Wendy Carlos and Giorgio Moroder, Patrick forged an electronic sound from his collection of synthesizers, modified guitars and self-constructed equipment. The listener enters a world of dark forbidden vices, introspective and reflective of Patrick's time spent in the bathhouses of San Francisco. The songs on 'School Daze' range from sparse proto-techno to high octane funk to somber post-punk to musique concrete, revealing the depth of Cowley's unique talent. Featuring over 80 minutes of music, this compilation contains soundtrack music from 2 Fox Studio films, 'Muscle Up' and 'School Daze', never before released on vinyl. The tapes were restored and transferred using the same speed and pitch settings. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy dual pocket gatefold featuring classic gay porn imagery from the Fox Studio vaults plus an essay from Indoor Life vocalist, Jorge Soccarras. For Patrick's 63rd birthday, Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem present a glimpse into the instrumental world of a young genius. These recordings shine a new light on the experimental side of a disco legend who was taken too soon..

life after breakfast / LP+CD

Los Microwaves was a San Francisco-based synth-punk trio who formed in 1979. The main line-up included Meg Brazill (vocals, bass, synthesizers), David Javelosa (vocals, synthesizers), and Todd 'Rosa' Rosencrans (drums, bass). Their recorded output consisted of a handful of 45's and their lone LP, 'Life After Breakfast', released on the legendary Posh Boy records in 1981. Creating sound and music from the fusion of techno-punk, new-wave pop, and electronic music, Los Microwaves featured a quirky audio theater that was best experienced live and from the dance floor. Sporting a combination of earlier portable synthesizers, bass and processed percussion, the music continues to deliver a unique groove. 'Life After Breakfast' contains 13 songs full of teen angst, jerky rhythms, melodic chants, and punky shouts. Meg's vocals are cheeky and peppy, recalling the anti-pop sound of The B-52's, Devo and early XTC. The band also sings in Spanish occasionally, making them San Francisco's 1st bilingual nuevo wave group. Los Microwaves toured coast to coast for 3 years. Upon moving to New York City, Interview Magazine's Glenn O'Brien wrote that they were 'possibly the greatest rock band ever'. After 2 more national tours, the band played their last show at New York's Danceteria in March 1983. The vinyl comes housed in the original jacket featuring iconic photo by Jack Abraham. Each LP includes a 12-page booklet with lyrics, photos, liner notes, and clippings. Also included is a full length DVD featuring a 15-song Los Microwaves concert from 1981, recorded at the I-Beam in San Francisco, as well as in interview with the band and the official music video for 'Life After Breakfast'. More than 30 years after its release, we can finally answer the question: yes there is there life after breakfast ;)

Algebra Suicide was the married couple Lydia Tomkiw (lyrics/vocals) and Don Hedeker (guitars/keyboards). They formed in Chicago in 1982, and their 1st 4-song ep, 'True Romance At The World's Fair', was self-released that year. It featured a 60's Vox Guitar Organ, a precursor to the synthesizer guitar, and a Multivox Rhythm Ace drum machine. In 1984 they released a second 4-song ep, 'An Explanation For That Flock Of Crows', ditching the guitar organ but adding the Casiotone MT-40. The 'Big Skin' cassette was released in 1986 and featured 13 new compositions with more complex arrangements. A compilation album, 'The Secret Like Crazy', was released in 1988. It collected 20 tracks picked from the 1st 2 eps and the Big Skin cassette, plus unreleased songs. 'Feminine Squared' is an 18-track compilation that collects all 8 songs from the 1st 2 eps, 4 songs from the Big Skin cassette, 4 songs from 'The Secret Like Crazy', a song from the 'Pas De Deux' compilation, and a previously unreleased song. Lydia and Don call their approach 'avant-garage' citing inspiration from Patti Smith, Frank O'Hara, Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed. Don plays guitar in a hauntingly stark style like Glenn Branca, Tom Verlaine, or Vini Reilly. He then adds Casio keyboards and minimal electronic percussion, creating a moody, atmospheric backdrop for Lydia's poems. Lydia's words span a broad range of twisted real-life observations, and are delivered in a deadpan fashion with her distinct Midwestern accent. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy black and white jacket featuring the cut up faces of Don and Lydia from 'An Explanation For That Flock Of Crows' ep. Each LP includes a newsprint zine with lyrics, photos, liner notes, and clippings. Also included is a full length DVD featuring a 12-song Algebra Suicide concert from 1984, recorded at the Noise Factory in Chicago. Though Lydia passed away in 2007, her genius lives on in these recordings. Respect her decadence..!

Debut vinyl ep from Bézier entitled 'Ensconced'. Bézier is the moniker of all-live-analog electronic wizard Robert Yang from San Francisco. Enchanted by the Cybernetic Broadcasting System (CBS), Robert started Djing as Robot Hustle, joining the Honey Soundsystem collective in 2007. Robert writes hooks, patterns and melodies in an automatic, stream of consciousness fashion. Memory and nostalgia play a big part in constructing his music. 'Ensconced' is the follow up to Bezier's debut cassette, released in 2012 on Break-Up records. The tile relates to themes of comfort and safety as well as complacency and entrapment. Influences range from the futuristic landscape of Syd Mead to the melodic energy of Patrick Cowley and the subdued, hidden motifs of My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless". Bézier blends elements of hi-nrg and dark dance to drive the mysterious underwater instrumentals of 'Ensconced'. Bezier's studio set up includes a variety of vintage Roland and Korg synthesizers as well as the italo disco favorite LinnDrum. These 6 tracks were written, produced and mixed by Bézier at his home studio in San Francisco between 2009 and 2013. once upon a time / LP

Belaboris was born in 1982 as the brainchild of Finnish producer Kimmo Miettinen. What Malcolm McLaren had been to The Sex Pistols, Miettinen was to Belaboris. He would put together an all-girl band that looked great in photographs but were backed by professional musicians. The 1st line-up was Vilma Vainikainen on main vocals, Sisko Vainikainen and Rita on back-up plus Jake and Mari who did not sing at all. The backing band behind Belaboris was a local new-wave group called Tyhjät Patterit (which translates to Empty Batteries). The main songwriter was Esa Ijäs (guitar, synthesizer) along with his bandmates Ari Ijäs (bass) and Martti Jalonen (drums). Belaboris' debut 12" single 'Kuolleet Peilit' was released in November 1982. It was followed by the 'Odotus' 7″ single in February 1983. The B-side was a cover of the Serge Gainsbourg song "Baby Pop". The band broke up and posthumously released a mini-LP called 'Olipa Kerran' in 1984. Within a few months, an all new Belaboris line-up was put together. This version was a trio consisting of Saara Soisalo (lead vocals), Sallamaari Muhonen (backing vocals) and Minna Soisalo ('moral support'). They released a 7″ single 'Rakkauden Jälkeen', an atmospheric electronic version of 60's Scandinavian pop hit by Carola. Shortly thereafter this line-up was quietly shelved and no further efforts were made. 'Once Upon A Time' collects songs from all 3 ep releases and the 'Olipa Kerran' mini-LP as well as 2 unreleased demos never before on vinyl. In Finland the synthetic futurist/new romantic pop was simply called "futu". Belaboris were in their own peculiar, undefinable no-woman's-land, in between the Finnish futu and gothic scenes. Between 1982 and 1984 Belaboris crafted catchy, melodic synth-pop with the occasional guitar. Their lyrics were stylistically 'kitchen sink melodramas' with occasional gothic elements inspired by movies. The name Belaboris, is a combination of the horror actors Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. The vinyl comes housed in a full color jacket and includes an insert with liner notes, lyrics and photos. 3 decades on, Belaboris have grown a considerable posthumous cult reputation that has spread also outside their native country, even defying the language barrier. Maybe Miettinen's idea worked, after all.

hands in the dark / 12"

Dark Day is the minimal electronics brainchild of Robin Crutchfield following his separation with no-wave band DNA. For the 1st incarnation of Dark Day, Robin recruited Nina Canal from The Gynecologists and later UT on guitar and Nancy Arlen from Mars on drums. They recorded 2 songs for a 7″ single, released in 1979 on Charles Ball's Lust/Unlust label. Off-kilter jerk-like guitar and energetic acrobatic tom-tom tumbling fuse with queasy lurching keyboards and 'cold medicine' vocals. This single stepped away from no wave towards what was going on in the U.K. with The Normal, Robert Rental and Throbbing Gristle. After this single Dark Day would regroup with Robin on synthesizers and vocals, Phil Kline on guitar, Barry Friar on drums and guest Steven Brown of Tuxedomoon on saxophone to record the 'Exterminating Angel' album. In 1981, the song "Trapped" was released as a 12" ep backed with "The Exterminations (1 Thru 6)". For these 6 instrumental tracks, Robin went back into the studio with the master tapes, flipped them over and played them backwards. Altering track assignments, speed and reverb effects, he rode the faders in and out, creating short "Exterminations" of the original songs. The result is Crutchfield's favorite Dark Day release. The vinyl comes housed in jacket featuring a self-made cartoon of Robin Crutchfield to announce the release of the 7" in 1979. Each LP includes a double sided 11×17 fold-out poster with lyrics and photos and song notes by Robin and Nina Canal. Dark Day continue to inspire the current wave of stark, eerie, processional synthesizer music more than 30 years later ;)

assemblage / LP

Here is the long lost sophomore album by Eleven Pond. The band formed during the mid-80's in Rochester, NY, while attending art school, and were brought together by their shared love of 4AD and Factory Records. They released their debut LP 'Bas Relief' in 1986. Before breaking up in October 1987, the band recorded 8 songs that would sit in abandoned storage containers for over 25 years. 'Assemblege' collects these multi-track recordings, which were originally made between march 1987 and july 1987. The lineup for this period was James Tabbi (vocals, acoustic guitar), Jeff Gallea (bass, drum programs, vocals, synthesizer), Jack Schaefer (electric guitar), Dan Brumley (sequences, samples, vocoder) and new member Tim Masick (electronic drums). 'Assemblage' is a logical progression from "Bas Relief" and will satisfy listeners who were left wanting more. The songs are driven by strong melodic basslines, atmospheric synth washes, and textural guitars. James' signature new-wave vocals sound more British than American, recalling the best of New Order or Depeche Mode. Tim Masick's drum programs add an electro element to Eleven Pond's Diy sound. Their primary influences were Joy Division, Fad Gadget and Echo & The Bunnymen, as well another obscure American college rock band, For Against. The vinyl comes housed in silk-screened jacket designed by Jeff Gallea. Each LP includes a double sided 11x11 cardstock insert with lyrics and photos. 25 years later we can finally enjoy this set of songs rescued from obscurity.

The band was born in 1981 when Florence Berthon (Vocals), Pascal Comelade (Organ, Synthesizer) and Thierry Den (Guitar, Vocals) met at a concert in Montpellier, France. They chose to the name the project Fall Of Saigon after a song by UK post-punk act This Heat. They self-released their debut ep in 1983 citing Nico & The Velvet Underground, Suicide and James Joyce as influences. At the time the band formed, Pascal Comelade was an accomplished musician with instrumental sketches composed for the trio. The 6 songs on the ep were recorded in 2 stages. "She Leaves Me All Alone" and "On The Beach At Fontana" were sung by Thierry and recorded at Pascal's home on a Revox 2-track in one shot. The 4 songs sung by Florence ("Visions", "Blue Eyes", "So Long" and "The Swimmer") were recorded and mixed at the Montpellier Languedoc Video Animation Center by Jean Alain Sidi on 2 ReVox A77 reel to reels and a small mixer. On "Visions", "Blue Eyes" and "So Long", the group employed a drum machine that could only play 4 or 5 rhythms with a single slider to increase or decrease the tempo. The songs were minimal: verse, chorus, no bridge, no intro. Built on a simple spine, they create a feeling of space with just a voice and an organ or synthesizer melody. Full of class and inventiveness, Fall Of Saigon are often compared to Young Marble Giants due to the fragile, ephemeral quality of the songs. The vinyl comes housed in a full color jacket using the original artwork from the ep and includes an insert with lyrics and photos. Through 2 years of existence, Fall Of Saigon only released one ep and 30 years later their subtle sound is an essential guidepost in post-punk history.

dance to a dangerous beat / LP

Informatics were a post-punk electronic band from Melbourne, Australia formed in 1981. Michael Trudgeon, Valek Sadovchikoff, Steve Adam and Ramesh Ayyar met in the experimental sound studio while attending the same art school. Philip McKellar later joined the band in 1983. Between 1981 and 1985, Informatics recorded numerous tracks, mainly in a garage, using a 4-track tape machine and any electronic gear they could get their hands on. The band held a fascination for contemporary visual art and moving images and videos would accompany their live performances. The production elements in the videos reflected Informatics' philosophy on sound composition: the footage was entirely pirated from television ads, manipulated and then collaged to create new narratives that reinforced the music. Informatics came to work together through a shared fascination in electronic music and the capabilities of analogue synthesizers. In early performances, long before the advent of samplers, the Informatics used a collection of synthesizers and other analogue and hand built equipment. These were patched together to create a unique battery of sounds. Between january and november 1981 Informatics recorded their debut 4 song 'Dezinformatzia' ep but it was not released until 1983 . The track "Proximity Switch", later renamed "Accidents In Paradise" became popular in parts of Europe and was re-released in 1985. 'Dance To A Dangerous Beat' collects all 4 songs from the 1st ep, 2 songs from compilation appearances as well as 6 unreleased tracks on vinyl for the 1st time. Informatics early songs have a brittle, cold, disconnected feel made by a Roland SH-101, Korg MS-20 and a lot of processed guitar. The later songs utilize newer technology and ambient, synthesized melodies closer to their country mates Severed Heads. The vinyl comes housed in a full color printed jacket using the original magenta and grey artwork from 'Dezinformatzia' ep. Each LP includes a double sized 11x11 insert with photographs and liner notes by the band. 'Dance To A Dangerous Beat' recounts the history of these synth-punk pioneers a world away from their contemporaries in America.

occupations / 12"

Sophomore ep 'Occupations' from San Francisco based synth trio Inhalt. Consisting of European and East Coast natives– Matia Simovich, Bryan Gibbs, and Philip Winiger. Inhalt's core operative strategy is of sonic fidelity and integrity rather than nostalgia. Living through the rise of a surveillance society, neo-liberal agendas, and the permeation of the ephemeral into popular culture, Inhalt return with a focused commentary in the form of the 'Occupations' ep. The record was produced over a year and a half, and mixed in both Austria and California, employing the best of modern and vintage techniques and technology. The sound is Inhalt's interpretation of the border between the voice driven song form and the expansive, extended 12″ arrangement. It is informed equally by the soundtracks of John Carpenter, as much as the vastness and sheen of Trevor Horn. Inhalt wrote and produced the ep in their own Bunker Studio in San Francisco. The A side was mixed by Inhalt in San Francisco, while Side B was mixed with the help of Werner Freistätter in Türnitz, Austria. Each EP is housed in a specially designed jacket by Leo Merz and includes a lyric sheet.

screams to god / LP

Kitchen And The Plastic Spoons formed at a basement rehearsal studio in Stockholm, Sweden during the spring of 1980. The band consisted of Anne Taivan (vocals), Helena Lönnqvist (synthesizer), Iggo Karlsson (synthesizer), Jackie Pazda (bass), and Mats Wigerdal (drums). After a few concerts, Kitchen booked some free studio time and recorded their 1st single "Serve You!" in 2 days. 6 months later Patrik Lindvall (guitar) joined the group and the band recorded their 2nd single "Ice Cream To God" in early 1981. Kitchen's sound was getting darker and heavier and so was the mood in the band. Anne shortly left and was replaced by Iodine Jupiter on vocals. This new line up recorded a few songs for local compilations. The band broke up in november 1981 before recording their debut LP. 'Screams To God' collects Kitchen And The Plastic Spoons 2 7" eps, 2 compilation tracks as well as 3 demos from 1980 never before released on vinyl. Kitchen were part of the new Diy generation starting bands, making self-produced singles and rapidly breaking up. Their sound echoes the speedy chaotic energy with the synthesizer as its driving pulse. Anne's vocals are barely understandable but they have a sense of urgency. They didn't sound like any other band in Sweden at the time, having more in common with American bands, Devo, The Screamers and Pere Ubu. The vinyl comes housed in a full color spot gloss jacket with a photo of Anne with bright magenta hair. Each LP includes an insert with liner notes, song descriptions and photos. Although the group burned out after a year, this compilation shows their energy and attitude to be just as liberating and unusual today. Nice one ;)

teenage demos / LP

Lećther Strip is the solo-project of Danish electronic industrial artist Claus Larsen. Discovered by the German techno artist and producer Talla 2XLC, Leaether Strip quickly built a buzz as one of the most exciting emerging acts in Europe in the early 90's. 'Teenage Demos' is a collection of Claus Larsen's earliest recordings. 9 demo songs recorded between 1982 and 1986 never before released on vinyl. Influenced by Fad Gadget, Depeche Mode and Jean Michel Jarre, Claus began creating synth-pop melodies at age 14. Though the melodies were catchy and upbeat they had a hidden melancholy because Claus knew that he was different than others. "Dreaming" was his 1st attempt to come out to himself as a queer kid. Lyrically the songs reflected what was going on in his head: youth, hope and dreams. Claus used a simple set up: Moog Prodigy, Yamaha drum machine, delay pedal and spring reverb. He would record the bass and drums on a double cassette recorder, without midi, sequencers or preset sounds. By 1985, Claus composed instrumental songs as the final 3 tracks on this album illustrate. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy jacket with original photograph of a 15-year old Claus as well as an insert with lyrics, photos and an interview. 'Teenage Demos' is a sneak peak into the world of early, emotionally intense foundations of Lećther Strip. Wonderful !!

shatter days / LP

Re-issue of the debut cassette by British duo Nagamatzu for the 1st time ever on vinyl. Expanded with 5 bonus tracks, 'Shatter Days' is a collection of 9 songs recorded between 1983 and 1988. Featuring Andrew Lagowski (SETI, Legion, Terror Against Terror) on synths, guitar, and programming and Stephen Jarvis (Pure Motorised Instinct, Terraform) on synths and bass with Andrew Fleck (synths, occasional vocals). Nagamatzu self-released their debut cassette 'Shatter Days' in 1983 after messing around with old tape machines, drum boxes and effects. They cite their early influences as SPK, Cabaret Voltaire and Joy Division. All the songs were recorded onto a TEAC reel to reel in the dining room at Andrew's parents' house. Some of the backing rhythms and sequencers were recorded 1st and then the band played along live during overdubs. These instrumentals combine stuttering bass, guitar bursts and funeral keyboards draped over a dragging drum machine beat, calling to mind Clock DVA, early New Order or Cocteau Twins. Their sound is full of complex rhythm patterns and dark electronics. On the flip side of this reissue are 5 tracks featuring contributions to international compilations ('If God Had Meant Us To Dance He'd Have Given Us Legs', 'Three Minute Symphony, Life At The Top' and 'Total Recess 3') plus a previously unreleased song. The vinyl comes housed in jacket silver and black offset printed jacket featuring the Nagamatzu symbol from the 'Shatter Days' cassette. Each LP includes a 8-page booklet full of photos, reviews and an interview with the band from 1983. Finally rescued from the UK Diy cassette underground and restored, 'Shatter Days' presents a band at their productive beginnings..

q1 deluxe edition 1980-1983 / LP

Q4U was born the winter of 1980-1981 in Reykjavík, inspired by the British punk movement. It's original members were Elínborg Halldórsdóttir (Ellý) (vocals), Berglind Garđarsdóttir (Linda) (vocals), Steinţór Stefánsson (guitar), Gunnţór Sigurđsson (bass), Helgi (drums) and Már (synthesizer). Helgi and Már soon left the band and Helgi was replaced by Kormákur Geirharđsson (Kommi) on the drums. By early 1982 they self-released a full length cassette, 'Skaf Í Dag' and appeared in the documentary Rokk í Reykjavík, which showcased the Icelandic punk scene. This version of the band ended and only 2 members continued on. In the summer of 1982 Ellý and Gunnţór recruited Óđinn Guđbrandsson (guitar) and Árni Daníel (synthesizer) from the band Taugadeildin. Their drummer was replaced by a Roland TR-808 drum machine they named Elísabet II, signaling a change in the group's sound toward synthesizer-driven post punk. In august 1983 Q4U reinstated Kormákur to record a final set of demos and then called it quits. This compilation collects 16 songs from 1980-1983. Side A features the original 6 songs from the 'Q1' ep, plus 2 songs from the 'Rokk Í Reykjavík' soundtrack. Side B collects 4 demos from 1982 and 4 demos from 1983, all presented on vinyl for the 1st time ever. Q4U began with a stylish, aggressive punk image before experimenting with drum machines and synthesizers, which almost nobody did in Reykjavík at the time. The later sound had gothic leanings, often compared with Siouxsie and the Banshees and Xmal Deutschland. Their body of work is united by the powerful vocals of Ellý, who mostly sings in Icelandic about controversial, political experiences, much like Ari Up of The Slits. The vinyl comes housed in a full color jacket using the original artwork from the 'Q1' ep. Each LP includes a double sized fold-out poster with lyrics, photos and drawings by the band plus a Q4U sticker! 30 years after their break-up Q4U are finally getting the vinyl reissue treatment they deserve, shedding a light on this pre-Riot grrrl act, more relevant today than ever..

'The Thing From The Crypt', is a 16-track compilation of UK Diy/synth/new-wave/post-punk originally released in 1981. Showcasing the thriving post punk sound of Watford, a town in Hertfordshire, England, located 20 minutes northwest of central London. 'The Thing From The Crypt' neither attempts to sell a Wotford sound nor claims to be a comprehensive guide to the area's best beat bands. Like all good compilations, its essence is variety: some tracks will make you come whilst other will make you vomit. This compilation features 8 bands with 2 songs included by each group. Exhibit A were a quartet featuring Mat and Dan from Solid Space and Paul and Andrew from Twelve Cubic Feet. Legendary post-punk act Sad Lovers & Giants make their 1st appearance here as a 5-piece. Mex was the solo project of Paul Mex, the man responsible for this compilation, who went on to produce songs for Wham and George Michael. Gambit Of Shame deliver driving carnival pop and would later work with ex-Soft Machine member, Robert Wyatt on their debut single. Flying Beechcraft serve a slice of wistful Flying Nun indie pop. Image In Ruin bounce between off-kilter NY no-wave skronk and angst. Soft Drinks were a short-lived synth-punk trio featuring the Jon Greville of Rudimentary Peni and Martin Drooper of The Magits who released a 3 song ep on Outer Himmylayan Productions. S-Haters were a deathrock quartet also on the Outer Himmylayan roster who channeled the gothic punk of Pil's "Metal Box" and Joy Division. The vinyl comes housed in a full color printed jacket using the original silk screened artwork. Each LP includes a copy of the 12 page booklet that came with the original pressing. 'The Thing From The Crypt' is more than a local compilation, its the stuff John Peel shows were made of.

Xex were an all-synthesizer band from South River, New Jersey in the late 70's. The band formed when a trio of high school misfits with funny names (Waw Pierogi, Thumbalina Gugielmo and Alex Zander) teamed up with some friends from Rutgers College. They released their debut album 'Group: Xex' in 1980. Dark Entries were lucky to discover the master tapes of their unreleased 2nd album “xex:change” in Waw's basement. 'Xex: Change' takes a leap from where the band left off at the end of 1980. David Anderson left the group making Xex a quartet. Recorded during the summer of 1981 and produced with Ziggy Rodberg, Xex further developed the aesthetic of the 1st album. The 7 songs here are more complex and hypnotic than the synth-punk outbursts of 'Group: Xex'. Their new synthesizers, a sequential Circuits Prophet 5 and a Minimoog, evoke the high-tech utopia of Patrick Cowley and proto-techno of Afrika Bambaataa. Thumbalina's vocals have a detached, icy quality. Lyrics revolve around Xex' melange of oeuvres, pop, kitsch and New Jersey mall culture; offering commentary on species-specific adaptations for copulation, technophilia/phobia and the Jersey shore. 'Xex: Change', a multiple entendre that refers to the evolution of the group since its 1st album, group interaction in the creative process, and underlying sexual ambiguity. The group did not have the funds to release the album and it sat in obscurity for over 30 years. The vinyl comes housed in jacket created by Alex Zander for his senior art project in college in 1980. Each LP includes a double sided 11x11 cardstock insert with lyrics and photos. Also included is a full length DVD featuring a 9-song Xex concert from 1981, recorded at Hurrah in New York. With the bonus DVD included in the new LP, more people will see Xex perform than ever saw them play live. More than 30 years later 'Xex: Change' finally sees the light of day and fits in today's world all too perfectly.

Figure Study's sound includes influences from such early underground artists as Kirlian Camera, Nine Circles, and The Actor. Max is based in Oakland and has been a part of various projects most notably Brotman and Short and his current solo work as Business Etiquette. Mara is based in San Francisco and is known for her solo work as Group Rhoda. On 'Less Ness' they worked with a hardware set up: 808 and Elektron drum machine, Moog, MAM, and Sequential Circuits synth with splashes of Mono/Poly and collage elements, vocoder lines and dubbed out vocals. They step away from the the computer as much as possible and prefer that their ideas can be traced back to the tools so that a sense of physicality remains. They find inspiration from all kinds of far out sounds, most notably dub, industrial, and various drug culture tangents. Lyrically the songs revolve around topics such as escapism, looking though cultural windows, and character role development. Some songs are a bit more surrealist in content with elements of hard realism and critical commentary. Each LP is housed in a jacket featuring a painting by Shana Why. maritime tatami / 12"

Duo of Antonio 'Eze' Cuscinŕ and Carlo Smeriglio from Italy. The band formed in Messina, but later relocated to Florence to join the rich musical scene there with Neon, Pankow, Alexander Robotnick and Diaframma. Beginning as a 4-piece combo (2 guitarists, bassist, drummer) in 1979, they slimmed down to a synthesizer and guitar-based duo a few years later. Their sole release was the 'Maritime Tatami / A Game Of Despair' ep, from 1983. Using an array of now-classic Roland synthesizers (TR 606, TR 303 Bassline, Juno 6) plus a Korg Polysix and Fender Stratocaster, they crafted 2 darkwave ballads. "Maritime Tatami" engulfs the listener with trance-inducing synth lines and melancholic vocals over its epic 8 minutes. Oblique minor-key bass lines provide an anchor while snappy, brittle 606 rhythms propel the track along. The lyrics tell the story of Tatami, a boy from a fishing town who yearns for a new life in the big city. "A Game Of Despair", on the flipside, is a haunting crawl through the eyes of a woman left by her lover. An angular guitar riff repeats hypnotically, as fragile icy synth lines chime emptily above it. The vinyl comes housed in an exact replication of the original jacket, and includes an insert with lyrics and never-before-seen photos. Victrola's only release is a truly singular and timeless masterpiece—it's from a dimension of its own. Tip !!

erring and errant / LP

Lč Travo is the brainchild of Patrick Bollen from Tienen, Belgium. As a teenager in the early 80's, Patrick would visit DeAtelier, the infamous coldwave/gothic club in Leuven. He would be inspired by Joy Division and other Factory releases, The Danse Society and Cocteau Twins. He gathered a some session musicians and a female backup vocalist. They recorded with live drums, TR-808 drum machine, Roland JX3P synthesizer, electric guitar and bass. Eventually Patrick bought a Greengate DE-3 sampler, using the brains of an Apple 2E with a keyboard bolted onto it. He crafted loops made from a deconstructed upright piano, hitting the strings directly with a drum stick. Lč Travo made their 1st appearance on a split LP with Fred A in 1984. 'Erring And Errant' is their debut 7 song LP originally released in 1985. For the reissue 3 bonus songs from the split LP have been added. The songs are coldwave in the vein of Weimar Gesang, Opera Multi Steel, and Clan of Xymox. Guitar, bass and sample interplay with piano and synthesizers with dark and forbidding crescendos in the fast numbers, and elegaic melancholy in the slow tracks. The vocals are delivered with a sense of urgency, while the lyrics are inspired by avant-garde movements such as futurism and constructivism, as well as science fiction and existentialism. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy jacket with original artwork as well as a fold-out poster with lyrics and photos. Lč Travo is derived from French word 'les travaux', which means : the works, a fitting name for this compilation of lost music from the Belgian underground..

re-membering dwayne / LP

At the end of 1981, brothers Darrin and Stephen Huss and schoolmate Dwayne Goettel performed for the 1st time as Psyche in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Their live show was a combination of horror and electronics that was completely unprecedented in Western Canada. Although Goettel and the Huss brothers parted ways before Psyche was to release any material, the masters containing Dwayne Goettel's performances were preserved in the band's vaults. Now, 19 years after Goettel's untimely passing in 1995, Dark Entries Records presents 'Re-Membering Dwayne', the original Psyche-Dwayne Goettel sessions. All tracks were recorded and mixed on 4-track during a single day in march of 1983. Psyche's early material is visceral and abrasive, a far cry from the sleek, dark synthpop they'd later become known for. Like the body horror films of fellow Canadian David Cronenberg, Psyche disquietingly conflate the organic and the mechanical, calling into question the limits of the human form. Dwayne, who would join Skinny Puppy a few years later, contributes heavily to this more aggressive, disturbing sound. Each LP includes a 12-page booklet with excerpts from Darrin Huss' diary, unpublished photos of Psyche with Dwayne, and an essay by Darrin reflecting on Psyche's past and the Goettel legacy as well as lyrics. This collection is a glimpse at the early Canadian industrial scene and the roots of Skinny Puppy. Go take a walk in the past with an ear for the future; you just might learn something ;D

signals from pier thirteen / 12"

Crash Course In Science are a post-punk band that formed in 1979 in Philadelphia. The band members, Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago and Michael Zodorozny, met while attending art school. They began to experiment with crude electronics and off-beat writing. CCIS avoids conventional instrumentation by using toy instruments and kitchen appliances to augment the distorted guitar, drums and synthesized beats. Their 1st single, "Cakes In The Home" was released in 1979 and their 4-song 12" ep 'Signals From Pier Thirteen' in 1981. Pier 13 was an abandoned coal-loading pier along the Delaware River near where CCIS rehearsed. The band went there often and was inspired by the huge silent machinery, shapes, shadows, ghosts and debris. The songs 'Cardboard Lamb' and 'Flying Turns' quickly became club favorites during the early 80's. This ep's raw, percussive sound influenced both techno and industrial music in later years. CCIS feel a strong connection to Throbbing Gristle, although they consider themselves as working in a parallel universe rather than being influenced by them. The vinyl is housed in the original jacket featuring stark black and white photos of Pier 13. Each LP includes a double sided 11x11 insert with lyrics, photos of the band and the atmospheric pier. Crash Course In Science go above and beyond what is considered 'new-wave' in attitude and sound..

versions of a life (recordings 1979-1981) / LP

'Versions Of A Life' is a collection of recorded works by London post-punk band Ski Patrol. Formed in 1979 by singer Ian Lowery and guitarist Nick Clift, the band played moody, epic, angular music. Active until late 1981, Ski Patrol's musical and lyrical output mirrored the dub-reggae influences of their Brixton and Ladbroke Grove home-bases, the civil unrest of post-punk Britain and the freedom to push aside the rock rulebook as had been done by their peers PiL and Gang Of Four. They self-released their 1st single in early 1980 with the help of Rough Trade and came to the attention of Malicious Damage, a label & management operation, formed to release the early works of Killing Joke. This association produced the band's biggest success, the 1980 indie chart hit "Agent Orange" (featuring Killing Joke's Jaz Coleman on synth). 'Versions Of A Life' collects Ski Patrol's recorded output in one place for the 1st time. This anthology also shines a light on the darkly comic, paranoid, often elegiac gutter poetry of the late Ian Lowery, who passed away in 2001. Including the band's 1st 2 singles, previously unreleased mixes of their third single and three unreleased songs from their last studio session. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy jacket with an unreleased photo of the band. Each copy includes a reproduction of a promotional poster with lyrics from 1981 designed by Mike Coles, the Malicious Damage house artist responsible for the label's iconic album and single covers.

Robin (vocals, percussion) and Catherine M. Marie (keyboards, vocals). They began to record demos utilizing a Elex Keyboard, Casio VL-Tone, Roland TR-606 drum machine, guitars and pedals. Layering organ-like keyboards over drum machine snares and a woodwind recorder, they created a unique style of medieval or baroque synth-pop. The result was a 4-song debut, eponymous ep, released in 1984 on their own label Orcadia Machina. The songs range from fast and bright, new-wave influenced by O.M.D.'s "Electricity" and slower, brooding darkwave ballads like "17 Seconds", 'Faith' era Cure. All songs were sung in French with lyrics about feeling of nihilism, disgust with life and escaping to a botanical garden in search of redemption. It was a pre-cursor to their darker and classic French coldwave sounds of their debut album 'Cathedrale' released the following year. The jacket is die-cut replica of the original sleeve using master templates the band created in 1984 and offset printed on heavy French off-white card stock. Each copy includes an inner sleeve printed with lyrics and perspective line drawings by Jean Vredeman de Vries from the 17th century.

'Uno' is a collection of early recordings from seminal Italian electronic act Kirlian Camera. Keyboardist/vocalist Angelo Bergamini founded the project in Parma in 1979, initially naming it Suicide Commando, before discovering another project using the same name. By 1980, Angelo had recruited singer Simona Buja, keyboardist Fabrizio Chiari and bassist Mauro Montacchini. Their demo cassette, 'Dawn', attracted the attention of Italian Records, a popular independent label. The following year, Mauro left the band and was replaced by Giorgio Vecchi, and the band recorded their first mini-LP, 'Kirlian Camera'. 'Uno' compiles the 4 songs from the mini-LP on Side A and the 6 songs from the demo cassette on Side B. Also included is the bonus track "Minitech", originally recorded in 1981, presented for the 1st time on vinyl as a gold-stamped flexi-disc. Kirlian Camera's clean, minimalist new wave is marked by strong haunting melodies, slow moving synth washes, and stark, dramatic vocals. Housed in the original jacket featuring a painting of a royal Italian noble on the front and black and white photos of the band on the back. Each copy includes a 2-sided postcard with a never before seen photo of Angelo and Simona taken from an early concert. Must-Have ;)

holland tunel dive / 12"

impLOG was the solo project of Don Christensen after leaving New York no-wave group The Contortions in 1979. He began making music using found sounds, a Univox drum machine, guitar stomp boxes, Casio keyboards and percussion instruments. Eventually Don gave a demo tape to Charles Ball at Lust/Unlust Records, who loved it, and released the 'Holland Tunnel Dive' b/w 'On B'way' 12" in 1980. "Holland Tunnel Dive" is a monotone lament, with a narrator reciting a list of all that is missing in his life along to a sparse, mechanical beat. A variable speed Milwaukee drill creeps its way into the song, eventually reaching cacophonous levels. After 4 minutes of industrial motorik, an upbeat saxophone riff breaks out unexpectedly, unsettling the listener even further. On the B-side is a deranged version of the Lieber and Stoller show tune "On Broadway", featuring lead guitar by Jody Harris of the Contortions. The record perfectly captures the dark and seedy vibe of downtown New York in the early 80's. The jacket is an exact replica of the original. On the front cover is an illustration of a hydraulic pump against a taxi-cab yellow background. Each copy includes a double sided insert with lyrics, never before seen photos and liner notes by Don Christensen. Strong record !

80's cheesceake / LP

Tom Ellard is the creative force behind Australian post-punk band Severed Heads. In 1982 he self-released 2 cassettes of solo material, '80s Cheesecake' and 'Snappy Carrion'. These cassettes document the transitional period between the early experimental Severed Heads' albums 'Clean' and 'Blubberknife' before the start of something new with 'Since The Accident'. With the advent of the then new Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer, a machine synonymous with the acid house sound, Tom began to write more beat driven material. The rhythms are made by a TR-808 drum machine, Kawai S100F and SH-1 synthesizers, plus various televisions, radios, cassette decks and pedals. 2 songs from these cassettes would later appear on the B-side of the 'Dead Eyes Opened' single. Fast forward 30 years, Tom was horrified to find that a copy of the '80s Cheesecake' cassette was listed for an absurd amount of money on eBay. He immediately made all of the material available on CD and eventually digitally as well. There was much discussion over how to best sequence this LP. Most of the tracks from the original 2 c60 cassettes have been included, as well as some previously unreleased material, finally completed after having been left abandoned back in 1982. This has only become possible with recent digital tools, but every element you hear is from 30 years ago, trimmed, re-aligned, and assembled in the fashion that was originally intended. The jacket artwork incorporates the original '80s Cheesecake' cassette. Each copy includes a fold-out poster with a large photo of Tom Ellard on one side and liner notes and press clippings on the other. A long lost ancestor to the sounds of Boards Of Canada, Aphex Twin and other Warp Records artists, '80's Cheesecake' is ripe for rediscovery. Tip !!

Sumerian Fleet is the supergroup of Dutch producers Alden Tyrell and Mr Pauli with vocalist Zarkoff. Their debut eponymous ep was released on Clone's West Coast series in 2010 and the 'Sturm Bricht Los' ep came out in 2012 on the Crčme Eclipse branch of Crčme Organization. Sumerian Fleet is ready to release their 1st full length album 'Just Pressure' all new material recorded between 2013 and 2014 as well as a remixed version of the title track from the 'Sturm Bricht Los' ep. 'Just Pressure' contains 80’s darkwave/EBM inspired tracks with an industrial tinge. Citing inspiration from Fad Gadget, Front 242, Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy, Sumerian Fleet deliver 9 songs of vintage dark electro. Their sound brings to mind rough 80's/90's industrial dance with a gothic tinge and a touch of bass guitar as the lead instrument. The band utilizes vintage analog gear like the Linn Drum, Roland TR-808, MiniMoog, Korg MS-20, and Roland Jupiter 8. All songs were recorded at Mr Pauli’s studio in Den Haag and Alden Tyrell’s studio in Rotterdam. Each LP is packaged in a custom-made jacket by our in-house designer Eloise Leigh, incorporating Mesopotamian pyramids and occult symbols, offset printed with gold ink at Stumptown Printers in Portland. Debut album by RedRedRed, a contemporary artist from San Francisco. Michael Wood, formerly of duo Primary Colors, began this project in 2012, taking inspiration from Front 242, Einsturzende Neubauten, Throbbing Gristle, Nietzsche and Sartre. Wood utilizes a simple setup of vintage analog synthesizers and drum machines, and records them on reel-to-reel. 'Pattern Completion' was originally planned as a 4 song cassette ep that was only released digitally. The A-side features remixed and remastered versions of the tracks from the ep. The B-side consists of 4 unreleased tracks, 2 of which are instrumental. The material on 'Pattern Completion' is strongly influenced by Michael's former live/work studio space in the Bayview District of San Francisco, an area surrounded by recycling facilities and water treatment plants. The songs reflect this industrial atmosphere, stacking treated rhythm box patterns, quivering synthesizers, and mechanical vocals. Each LP is housed in a jacket featuring photography by Melissa Joy Bernier and contains a double sided insert 11x11 with lyrics. 'Pattern Completion' develops the strain of futuristic, mutant industrial pioneered by San Francisco groups like Tuxedomoon and Factrix, with RedRedRed adding his own brand of damaged angular rhythms..

Dark Entries Editions reissue series continues with a double A-side of the 1st 2 Helen maxi singles, "Witch" and "Zanzibar", as a 4-song ep. Helen was an italo-disco studio project that consisted of various producers, songwriters, and vocalists from Italy in the 80's. The 1st line-up included popular italo producers Piero Cairo and Massimo Noe, known for their work with Joe Yellow, Den Harrow, Pink Project, and Dharma to name a few. They were joined by prolific italo session vocalist Elena Ferretti. "Witch" was originally released in 1983 on Out Records, a label distributed by Discomagic Records. Signature Linndrum and Simmons drums create the driving rhythm track while Elena's powerful vocals tell the haunted tale of a witch and her magic. In 1985 the 2nd incarnation of Helen recorded the song "Zanzibar". The vocal version was written by Ennio Ronchelli (keyboards) and Roberto Barocelli (guitar, bass), with singer Daniela Paratici. This line-up was heavily influenced by the 'Afro' movement made popular by Dj Beppe Loda. 'Afro' refers to the Cosmic musical trend of slower disco records featuring African drums and rhythms. The 'Afro mix' of "Zanzibar" was produced by Dj Daniele Losi and Roberto Lodola, with additional live hand drums and sticks by Nigerian percussionist George Aghedo. The vinyl is housed in the original jacket from the "Witch" maxi single, featuring artwork by Elena Feretti. Each ep includes a fold out poster with the nude female model. Hmmm..

They met in art school and became friends, inspired by new-wave, dance and electronic music. They recorded their only single "Dark Silence" in november of 1984, which was released by Discomagic in 1985. Fabrice programmed the electronic drums using SCI Drumtraks and added extra tracks on the Simmons SDSV. Rush played electric guitar and the Yamaha piano notes at the start of the song. Guest musicians Silvano Borgatta and Riccardo Rosa do the 'da da da da da' voice effect was done by engineer Gigi Guerrieri, who cut and spliced a tape rather than using a sampler, which was too expensive at the time. "Dark Silence" tells the love story of beautiful girl who Fabrice saw many times but could not reach. He called her 'Dark Silence', for her dark hair and eyes and the silence unwanted between them. The B-side features a remixed version with extended breaks and dubbed out bass lines and vocals. 30th anniversary of the italo-disco club hit "Walking In The Neon". Peter Richard was the alias 1st adopted in 1979 by producer and vocalist Walter Beinat. His best known song was "Walking In The Neon", released as a maxi-single on Italian label Good Vibes in 1985. For this single Richard teamed up with the production duo of Gigi Farina and Franco Rago, best known for their projects Lectric Workers, Decadance, Expansives, and Wanexa. "Walking In The Neon" was written by Rago & Farina with help from Chuck Rolando, member of Italian disco group Passengers. The track's arrangement was done by Italian disco pioneer Celso Valli who wrote club classics for Macho, Azoto, Passengers and Tantra, to name a few. On the A-side is the 'Club' version, an uptempo classic that sounds like a dream encounter between mid-80's New Order and hi-NRG legends Patrick Cowley and Bobby Orlando. Clocking in at nearly 9 minutes, it is purely dancefloor oriented on an epic scale, with evolving hooks and melodies. The B-side features a shorter 'Dub' version with extended breaks and bass lines. dead eyes opened / 12"

Severed Heads are one of the longest surviving bands to emerge from the Australian post-punk independent music scene. They began in Sydney in 1979, incorporating elements of industrial noise-generation, tape cutting & looping and electronic sound synthesis. As the project developed song-structures and vocals were employed in a more-or-less recognizable mutant electro pop style. After many line-up changes featuring Gary Bradbury and psychedelic guitarist Simon Knuckey, Severed Heads was the vehicle for composer Tom Ellard. By 1983 they released a C-60 cassette called 'Since The Accident' that grabbed the attention of Ink Records, a subsidiary of Virgin in the UK. Ellard added a throwaway track at the last minute to fill out the cassette, not wanting to leave an unseemly gap on a C60 tape. This track, "Dead Eyes Opened" was catchy enough to get a lot of airplay on the main non-commercial radio station in Sydney. The band was asked to make this song into a 12" single. For this extended version, Tom Ellard and producer Patrick Gibson went to M Squared studio and passed the multitrack through various EQ and delays. "Dead Eyes Opened" features lyrics from a radio program narrated by Edgar Lustgarten, a crime journalist from England. They reference an actual double murder case that occurred in 1924 calling to mind the gruesome imagery of Hannibal Lecter. The rhythms are made by a TR-808 drum machine and an SH-1 synthesizer. A KORG PolySix did the rising wafty sound and strings. The load solo was a Casiotone run through an Octaver foot pedal. On the B-side are 2 solo compositions "Bullet" and "Mount" that Ellard recorded at Terse Tapes in 1982. Housed in the original jacket featuring the iconic photograph of a girl with a painted face wrapped in some cloth by Juilee Pryor. Each copy includes a fold-out newsprint poster with a large photo of the band wearing Art Unit skull shirts on one side and liner notes and press clippings on the other. 30 years later Severed Heads are still paving the way for powerful imaginative challenging music far and wide.

Executive Slacks was spawned in Philadelphia by 3 restless art students : Matt Marello, John Young & Albert Ganss in the early 80's. Starting out with performance art in subways, they soon took their angst-ridden act to galleries and night clubs. They recorded 4 songs in the fall of 1982 that became their self-titled ep released by local independent label Red Records in 1983. On their debut ep Matt Marello roars and churns out white-hot shards of guitar while John Young's short-circuited noise machines and Albert Ganss's industrial metal drums create dramatic body rhythms. The Slacks drew their influences from contemporaries like Cabaret Voltaire and Tuxedomoon, as well as disco and dadaism. The tracks were created with the use of heavily modified synthesizers and noisemakers, industrial steel drums, metal rods and plates. Dripping in nihilism, the song's lyrics tackle the existential dread of the late 20th century. Executive Slacks' unique brew of primitive electronics, harsh guitars and aggressive vocals inspired many bands like Ministry, Front 242 and Skinny Puppy. Housed in the original jacket featuring a painting by Albert Ganss. Each copy includes an 8-page booklet on industrial gray and blood red paper with lyrics, photos and press clippings from the band's archives. As James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem said of "The Bus", 'I always wanted to make a song that sounded like that'.

Xymox, later known as Clan of Xymox, was founded in Nijmegen, a city in the east of the Netherlands, in 1983 by Ronny Moorings (vocals, guitars, synthesizers) and Anka Wolbert (vocals, bass). Ronny saved up to buy a TEAC 144 4-track tape recorder and the duo relocated to Amsterdam in april of 1983. They began to record songs utilizing a Yamaha CS-15, Korg MS-10 and MS-20, a BOSS Dr. Rhythm DR-55, guitar and effects pedals. Layering drone-like tones of monophonic synthesizers over tape loops, rhythm tracks, guitar, and bass, they created a unique fusion of lush psychedelia and dark, angular atmospherics. The result was a 5-song ep, 'Subsequent Pleasures', was released in 1984 and limited to 500 vinyl copies. It was a precursor to the darkwave sounds of their self-titled debut LP on 4AD Records, which was released the following year. At the time, Anka was designing silk-screened posters for a music venue called Oktopus. She based the sleeve design on a drawing she had done of Ronny lying in the grass that summer and used some cutouts and details of other photos. Today, the record is highly sought after by collectors. One song from the ep, "Muscoviet Musquito", was later re-recorded for the compilation album 'Lonely Is An Eyesore' released by 4AD in 1987. All jackets have been silk-screened with pink and grey paint, using the original plates Anka created in 1984. 30th anniversary of "Dancing Therapy" by International Music System, often abbreviated as I.M.S. In 1983 Maurizio Cavalieri and Giorgio Stefani, the same musicians who brought you "Spacer Woman" by Charlie, created International Music System in Vicenza, Italy. Under this moniker, the 2 would release a pair of albums of stylized and syncopated electronic dance songs showcasing the still-evolving advancement of computer and keyboard-generated music. "Dancing Therapy" was released as a 12" single in 1984 on the Cavalieri's own Mr Disc Records. It utilized the Roland TR-808, Yamaha DX7 and Linn drum as the main percussion. Giorgio would hit the 2 sides of a metal triangle with a drum stick, creating the high pitched tone break throughout the song. Guest vocalist Rebecca McLain, an American ballet dancer, sings about getting lost in music as a means to escape from your troubles. The single anticipated the beats and sounds of Freestyle music as well as influencing the early house scene due to radio airplay on Chicago's WBMX. On the B-side is "Love Games", an electro dance song with breakbeats in the vein of Afrika Bambaataa that features Giorgio on vocals. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy jacket with original artwork featuring an iconic photo with each band member in side profile view. catholic / 2x12"

'Catholic', the lost opus of disco pioneer Patrick Cowley & Indoor Life vocalist Jorge Socarras. Perhaps one of the most revolutionary and influential people in the canon of disco music, Cowley created his own brand of hi-nrg dance music, 'The San Francisco Sound'. Born in Buffalo, NY on October 19, 1950, Patrick moved to San Francisco at the age of 21. He studied at the City College of San Francisco and met Jorge Socarras in 1973 through mutual friends. The duo's 1st collaboration was a ten-minute trance-inducing epic that Cowley composed for a performance piece by Socarras in 1975. Patrick, who played drums, guitar and keyboards, provided the perfect match for Jorge's vocal talents. Between 1975 and 1977 they recorded an album's worth of material before Socarras moved to London and Cowley started playing synthesizers for Sylvester. Upon Jorge's return to San Francisco in 1979, the duo would re-record some of the 'Catholic' songs with Patrick's newly acquired equipment. Meanwhile, Socarras met the musicians with whom he would form Indoor Life, and in 1980 Patrick co-produced their 1st album. The 'Catholic' album was offered to San Francisco's Megatone Records who passed on it. Fast forward to 2007 when Honey Soundsystem was contacted by John Hedges, former co-owner of Megatone Records. Hedges' was moving to Palm Springs and invited the crew over to his basement to collect over 2000 records from his collection. Among the archives were three moldy boxes of quarter inch reel to reel tapes featuring unreleased music by Cowley, including the 'Catholic' material. The reel was passed on to Stefan Goldmann of Macro Recordings in Berlin who was able to track down Jorge Socarras and clear the rights. 'Catholic' was finally released on CD in 2009. 'Catholic' is a genre-bending concept album that ranges from minimalistic proto-techno to synth-driven post-punk, pre-dating the dance punk acts LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture by almost 30 years. It shows a much broader range than any Cowley or Socarras material available and gives a totally new perspective to one of the most inspiring eras in music history. Influenced by Tomita, Wendy Carlos, the Velvet Underground, and Roxy Music, 'Catholic' prefigures acts like Talking Heads, Units, The Human League or Chris & Cosey. Patrick forges a unique electronic sound from his collection of synthesizers, modified guitars, and self-constructed equipment while Jorge's vocals go from hypnotic to camp, singing about gay love juju and tackling classics by Donovan and Stoller & Leiber. Featuring over 80 minutes of music never before released on vinyl, this compilation contains 2 bonus tracks not featured on the CD release. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy dual pocket gatefold featuring the intended album cover from the original 'Catholic' photo shoot in 1979, and the original hand-lettering by Arch Connelly aka A. Style intended for the 1st 45rpm single. Inside the gatefold sleeve contains lyrics and an essay from Jorge Socarras. For the 32nd anniversary of Patrick's death, Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem present a glimpse into the minds of these 2 geniuses. These recordings shine a new light on the experimental side of a disco legend who was taken too soon..

Italo-disco dance classic "Spacer Woman" by Charlie. Formed in 1983 as an experiment to break the mold of the classic disco dance sound, Charlie was the vehicle for musician and producer Maurizio Cavalieri who had found fame with Italian disco group Firefly. Cavalieri had been listening to the new crop of UK synth-pop and new-wave like Depeche Mode and Heaven 17 and wanted to create a more electronic, futuristic sound. He recruited his friend Giorgio Stefani to help write the song and compose lyrics. "Spacer Woman" was recorded in Vicenza, Italy and released by Cavalieri's own Mr. Disc Organization in 1983. The track features the signature italo Linn drum machine as well as the Roland TR-808 and a Yamaha DX7 for the arpeggiated synthesizer melody. "Spacer Woman" spans over 7-minutes and features the spaced-out vocals of Stefani's wife, who sings through a vocoder. The single has become a cult revival track since its appearance on the legendary I-f mix CD 'Mixed Up In The Hague' in 2001. bay area retrograde (BART) vol 2 / LP

'Bay Area Retrograde (BART) Volume 2' is Dark Entries' 2nd compilation of underground music from San Francisco (and the greater Bay Area) made between 1978-1983. Towards the end of the 70's, San Francisco's experimental music scene clashed with the aftermath of punk and gave birth to a vibrant underground. By the early to mid 80's the Diy music scene of the Bay Area was a hotbed for experimental and quirky new-wave, post punk, and synthpop, quite similar to New York's no-wave scene and Berlin's Neue Deutsche Welle. This compilation connects the (transit) lines between these varied musical offerings and tells the secret story of eleven forgotten Bay Area bands. 'BART Volume 2' features slow, dystopian horror from pioneering industrial group Factrix; crushing, motorik noise from acid punks Chrome; amphetamine-driven synth punk from Red Asphalt; an early demo, never released on vinyl, from legendary post punk band Tuxedoomon; chilling atmospheric drone from Ki Di Me; leftfield new wave from Indoor Life featuring Patrick Cowley on synths; Los Microwaves more sinister side project Baby Buddha; gay drag icon Timmy Spence delivering an unknown camp classic, a pure instrumental electro-pop workout from Human Being Men; TR-808 fueled synth pop from Menlo Park duo Wonders of Science, and a poetic yet somber and haunting song from the mysterious Zru Vogue. Each LP is housed in a large 6-panel, 2-sided fold out poster designed by Eloise Leigh, featuring original photos and fliers from each band's personal archive plus a 36"x24" print of a photograph by Ruby Ray from 1978. BART is the acronym for Bay Area Rapid Transit, the main rail transportation system for the San Francisco Bay Area. This LP is by no means a definitive compilation but merely opens the tunnel to the underground of the Bay!

In 1982 Die Form released their debut vinyl album, 'Die Puppe' in a limited edition of 1000 copies. These are the 1st esoteric electronic experiments, often improvised, from what would become the sound of the project. Underlying themes of eroticism, death and other taboo subjects are apparent in both the music and the album artwork, which Philippe also produces. The album was recorded with entirely analog equipment (Roland MC4 Micro-Composer, TR-808 Rhythm Composer, ARP 2600, Kawai 60F, Revox B77). split / 12"

Reissue split ep of rare and out of print Detroit electro jams from Nu-Sound II Crew & Magnus II. Both were projects of mastermind Sam Anderson (aka Dj Maestro). Growing up on the westside of Detroit, Maestro joined the Marine Corps in 1979 and was turned on to electronic music. One of his fellow Marines was a Dj from Brooklyn who schooled Maestro on how to mix records, blending dance songs seamlessly. While stationed on base in california, he set up a Dj crew called Nu-Sounds and perfected his technical skills. He returned to Detroit in 1984 and auditioned for the electrifying Mojo on WJLB. It was there that he met the godfather of Techno, Juan Atkins, who introduced him to emerging new sounds of dance & party music. Juan showed him how to make and record music using a Roland 808 and 909, Linn Drum and a Boss DR-55 drum machine. In 1986 Maestro created a new alias for himself, Nu-Sound II Crew, by adding a roman numeral II to his former Dj crew name. That year he self-released his 1st 12" single 'The Speed Of Light' on Sound Wave Records. Only 500 copies were made and distributed by Juan Atkins' Metroplex Records. Influenced by Kraftwerk & Cybotron, Nu-Sound II Crew created fresh, fast, dark electro beats with tough drum machines and lyrics about traveling through outer space. A 2nd single was released that same year, "1001 Beats", a slower, deep and heavy vocoder track with guitar by Jerome Blackwell that riffs the 'Batman Theme' during the break. By the late 80's, Maestro was using different alias such as Sam a& Dave, Zetta, and Magnus II to make it look like a lot of artists were on his new label Steppin' Forward Records. Magnus II was named after guitarist Jeff Magnus who plays on the sole 12″ single from the project 'Roctronic / Space Age' released in 1993. For this EP reissue, all 3 original mixes of "Space Age" are included: LP version, dub, and remix. "Space Age" blends EBM rhythms with tough drum machine beats to create an electro hybrid somewhere between Belgium and Detroit. Each copy includes a post card with a photo of the Nu Sounds crew DJing in 1984..

alien be-in remix / 12"

Remix ep of Psychic TV's classic acid house song "Alien Be-In". Psychic TV was formed by Genesis P-Orridge & Peter Christopherson after the breakup of Throbbing Gristle in 1981. After various line up changes, the band shifted direction to dance oriented songs influenced by the Acid House scene in America. By 1988 experimental electronic musician Fred Giannelli, of Turning Shrines, joined the band and over the next 2 years started to record songs for 'Toward The Infinite Beat'. The album was a mix of deep, multilayered tracks full of bright and hypnotic dance numbers, providing the soundtrack to the rave culture that sprung up in the UK in the 90's. "Alien Be-In" was written in early 1989 on an E-mu Emax Sampler and an Alesis MMT-8 sequencer. Vocal samples were taken from a tape Germs drummer Don Bolles sent to Genesis. A didgeridoo rides throughout the song, heavily modulated by a Gristleizer creating a hypnotic effect. Near the end of the song the breakbeat slides out of time yet the band chose to leave this in because it sounded strange and fit the concept of the track. Genesis played a spaced out Echo Violin and the band used 360 degree panning rotation devices. For this reissue Fred Giannelli takes a stab at remixing the mono mix of the original sequence sourced from the Emax floppy discs. On the flip are 2 brand new mixes, the 1st from Los Angeles based producer, Silent Servant, who updates the classic with his modern brand of driving EBM techno. The 2nd remix is a team effort from Silent Servant and veteran producer John Tejada, that re-creates the original melody using a Roland TR-808 and TB-303, paying homage to early Chicago Acid House artists like Lil Louis and Robert Owens. The 12" is housed in a mind-alerting, metallic silver die-cut sleeve and a neon green label that pops through, featuring the psychic skull transformed into an alien cone head label all designed by Eloise Leigh. Each copy includes a 2-sided 11×11 square insert with black and white photo of the band from 1988 and liner notes by Fred Giannelli.

a slight delay / 2x12"

Van Kaye + Ignit is the Dutch duo of Ed Van Kasteren (Van Kaye) and Ignatine Bekken (Ignit), who joined forces in the city of Arnhem during early 80's. While at university, Van Kaye was the singer of The MoNoMeN, a local new-wave band. By the end of 1979 he had become more interested in the use of electronics and rhythmic industrial patterns. In April 1980 he released a demo cassette with 30 minutes of his own work titled 'A Slight Delay'. While experimenting with synthesizers and developing extreme sounds, he met Ignit, who had previously worked in the fields of art and performance. Together they recorded their 1st 4 songs with guest musician Williem Wisselink (Wizzkopf) in the summer of 1981, and released the 'Picassos On The Wall' 7" later that year on their own Ding Dong label. Van Kaye + Ignit then began work on their debut 60 minute cassette album, 'A Slight Delay'. Like the 7", all songs were recorded and mixed by Van Kaye at his home studio on a TEAC A-3440 4-track recorder. Self-released in 1981, the album pairs conceptual sophistication with disarming naďveté in a way that has been difficult to replicate since the formative years of 'bedroom' electronic music. Both members handle vocals (or non-vocals), and songs feature everything from new wave riffs to slowly shifting oscillator buzzes and eerie electronics over mechanical rhythms. This reissue includes the entire 11-track original c-60 cassette 'A Slight Delay', as well as all 4 tracks from the 'Picassos On The Wall' 7" spread across 2 vinyl discs. The jacket is a replica based on the original 'A Slight Delay' cassette artwork, which was designed by the Van Kaye, with a hand-colored textured photograph resized and laid out by Eloise Leigh. Each album includes an 8x14 double sided insert with photos, lyrics, liner notes by the band, and a fold-out poster.. Tip !!

and life is / LP

Moral was the trio of Marco Andreis (guitars, bass), Hanne Winterberg (vocals) and Ingolf Brown (synthesizers, rhythm box, sequencer) from Aarhus, Denmark formed in 1981. They released their debut mini-album 'Dance Of The Dolls' on cassette in 1981 and the album 'Whispering Sons' on cassette in 1982. The group played very few concerts, but supported both Monochrome Set & Nico. In May 1983, they contributed 3 songs to the Irmgardz Records sampler 'Somewhere Outside', a compilation featuring groups from outside of Copenhagen. During the summer of 1983, Moral recorded and produced their debut LP, 'And Life Is...' at Ingolf Brown's home studio. It was the 1st release on Ingolf's label ARP Gramophone in August 1984. Influenced by early 4AD Records, Joy Division, Brian Eno and Wire, the band crafted their own brand of Nordic melancholic post-punk. The album develops the band's signature sound of airy, glacial synthesizers with crepuscular guitar and serpentine melodies. The main synthesizers used are the primitive Roland TR-606 Drumatix, the percussion side-kick to the TB-303, plus the BOSS DR-55 Dr. Rhythm drum machine. Hanne's hauntingly beautiful vocals walk the line between germanic chill of Nico & Alison Statton of Young Marble Giants. Lyrical themes of cold nights and blossoming relationships paint a detailed picture of youthful life in Scandinavia. This deluxe edition contains 3 bonus tracks that originally appeared on the 'Somewhere Outside' compilation. The jacket is an exact replica of the original 1984 edition featuring a photo by Per Wiklund of a wave crashing into the sea. Each copy includes a double sided 11"x11" insert containing lyrics for each song and photos of the band. This reissue is dedicated to Ingolf Brown who passed away in 2012..

Λένα Πλάτωνος (Lena Platonos) is a Greek musician, pianist and music composer. One of the pioneers in the Greek electronic music scene of the 80's, she remains active until today. Lena was born on the island of Crete and grew up in Athens. She began learning how to play the piano at the age of 2 and became a professional pianist before turning 18. Soon afterwards, she received a scholarship and studied in Vienna and Berlin where she was exposed to jazz, rock and Middle Eastern music. She permanently returned to Greece in the late 70's and began working with the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation. Her debut album was released in 1981 and marked a innovative change in Greek music by featuring the strong use of synthesizers, which Platonos had begun to experiment with."Γκάλοπ" ("Gallop") was Lena Platonos' 2nd record that she solely composed, produced and sang. The record was released in 1985 and had a profound effect on the contemporary Greek music scene. "Gallop" was composed in the wake of a painful separation and took several months to complete. Lena says, 'It's a study in the mythology of urban population of the contemporary metropolis and also a gaze into the future life of it'. The album is made exclusively of analog synthesizers and heavily features the iconic Roland TR-808 drum machine. Lena's narrates each song, reciting her own surreal Greek poetry with unique skill. Lyrics deal with heartbreak, dreams, desires and the foresight of society's obsession with computers in our daily lives. "Gallop" is an album ahead of its time and Lena has an exceptional talent for conceiving issues that were to conquer Greek TV screens and newspapers many years later. The jacket is an exact replica of the 1985 edition featuring Lena's original collage. Each copy includes a 2-sided lavender 11"x11" insert with lyrics, photos and liner notes by Lena, filmmaker Antonis Boskoitis and fellow Greek musician Vassilikos. Prepare to become fully enveloped and entranced by this haunting masterpiece ;)

I staggered mentally / LP

Portion Control is a British electronic and industrial band from south London. The trio of John Whybrew, Ian Sharp & Dean Piavani started out experimenting with electronics in 1980. Linking up with In Phaze Records, they released a number of cassettes and records before signing with Illuminated Records in 1983. There followed a series of classic 12" singles: 'Raise The Pulse', 'Rough Justice' and 'Go-Talk', which have become underground dancefloor hits. The band classifies their music style as Hard Rhythmic Electronics and were a major influence on Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly and Depeche Mode. Going back a few years, the band released their first official vinyl album 'I Staggered Mentally' on In Phaze Records in 1982. This album laid the template for the harder edged rhythmic industrial sound of the 80's and 90's. 'I Staggered Mentally' is as raw as electronic music gets. Dean Piavani's anguished vocals are the lone human element amidst electric drones, metallic beats and alien analog flickers. Lead synths and effects were created with the Roland SH-09 and RS-09. The rhythm section was provided by the Roland TR-606 and then brand new TB-303 Bassline. Pulsing rhythmic tones were generated using the sample and hold feature of the Moog Rogue. This album documents the band's transition from Cabaret Voltaire-inspired experimentalists into proto-EBM and electro-industrial pioneers. It remains a shockingly brutal and viscerally exciting statement. The jacket is an exact replica of the original 1982 edition featuring a pixelated man screaming. Each copy includes a 8 page, stapled pamphlet that contains press releases, concert flyers and photos circa the recording of 'I Staggered Mentally'. The perfect soundtrack for the harsh, even malignant, urban-industrial nightmare..

bryllyant / 12"

Boytronic is a synth-pop group from Hamburg, Germany founded by Holger Wobker & Peter Sawatzki in 1982. The duo began composing music as the soundtrack to sex shows on Hamburg's famous 'Mile Of Sin'. Soon after, Holger started working in a local record shop where he played early Boytronic demos during his shifts. A representative from Mercury Records came to the shop, heard the songs and gave the band a contract. They would go to release many singles and 2 albums 'The Working Model' in 1983 and 'The Continental' in 1985. By 1986 the record company claimed rights to the band name and put together a completely different line-up fronted by Hayo Lewerentz. This new incarnation continued to record under the Boytronic name until the mid-90's. Influenced by Kraftwerk, The Human League, Visage and Depeche Mode, the band crafted their own brand of synth-pop. Their 1st single "You" was released by Mercury Records in 1983 and became a Top 10 club hit in many European charts. Inspired by New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle", the song in an openly gay love song, where the singer expresses his loneliness waiting the return of his adoration for another man. "Trigger Track" was released in 1984 as a B-side of the 2nd Boytronic single "Diamonds And Loving Arms". It was originally planned as an A-side, but was declined by the record company. "Bryllyant" was originally released as a B-side to the 86 remix of "You" on JDC Records, a label aimed at dancefloors and club Djs. A Belgian Dj played the song at 33rpm and convinced the band to release this slower speed version in 1988. It became the band's 2nd most successful release and a hit across Europe. This ep features both the 1986 US remix and 1988 33 1/3 plus 8 remix of "Bryllyant", as well as the original 1983 extended 12" version of "You" and a special edit of "Trigger Track" never before released on vinyl. Each ep comes in an jacket featuring neon green spot gloss lettering based on the 1988 "Bryllyant" single, and includes an 8.5x11 glossy press photo with liner notes, credits and lyrics, designed by Eloise Leigh. lost tracks vol. 1 / 12"

Miss Kittin & The Hacker are the electro duo of Caroline Hervé & Michel Amato from Grenoble, France. The pair met during the early 90's at a rave and soon after bought turntables and began Djing. In 1996, they began writing music heavily influenced by 80's synth and post-punk bands like Fad Gadget, DAF, Liaisons Dangeuresues, and Yazoo, as well as italo-disco. Bored by the techno scene at the time, they set out out to lighten the serious tone and bring a campy sexiness to the dour musical landscape. Upon hearing their demos Dj Hell signed them to his Munich-based International DJ Gigolo label and released their first 2 eps in 1998 and 1999. Their debut album 'First Album' was released in 2001. 'Lost Tracks Vol. 1' contains 4 previously unreleased demos recorded between 1997 and 1999. The duo fused 80's European new-wave/italo-disco with 90's Detroit electro acts like Le Car and Dopplereffekt. By utilizing verse-chorus structures, they playfully shook up the loop based hard techno and electro that was popular at the time. Their studio set up at the time was a Korg MS-20, Roland SH-101, TR-606, TR-808, Siel DK80, and Boss DR-660 drum machine. The songs are direct, spontaneous, seemingly improvised in places. Miss Kittin sings about falling in love with an alien, sexy nightlife in Berlin, and explicit S&M leather play, all in her cheekily derisive French accent. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy jacket featuring a black and white photo of the duo taken in 1996. Each ep includes a postcard with liner notes from Miss Kittin and The Hacker designed by Eloise Leigh. As Miss Kittin says of these demos, “We were naive, innocent, adventurous and we didn't expect anything in return”.. Their best work to date..

orient express / last summer / 12"

Wish Key was an italo-disco group formed by the husband/wife duo of Manlio Cangelli & Lorella Ghilardi in Milan. Their 1st single "Orient Express" was released in 1983 by Discomagic Records. The song was arranged, composed and recorded by Manlio, with the lyrics by Lorella. It was supposed to be the new single for Blue Russell, but on the insistence of Severo Lombardoni of Discomagic Records, the group was persuaded to use a male vocalist. A demo of the song was given to Dj Massimo Berti, who contributed lead vocals, while the backing vocals were done by Blue Russell. The subsequent promotion of the song demanded finding an alternate female vocalist because Blue Russell was already committed to the promotion of her own single, 'I Wanna Fly Away'. Silvia Merelli, Berti's wife, was brought in for TV appearances and future recordings. In 1985 Massimo Berti began recording another single for the Wish Key project. "Last Summer" was recorded with help from italo producer Sandy Dian. "Orient Express" begins with a rolling bassline, bright synthesizer stabs, and a sampled train siren. The double-tracked male/female vocals compliment each other perfectly, heightening the dramatic tension. Massimo sings about taking a train ride as a metaphor for traveling through life's adventures. The song is accompanied by a shorter instrumental edit with an extended intro. On the flip is "Last Summer", a slower paced affair with Silvia recalling a dream of lying on the beach and having a good time. The breakdown introduces synthesized steel drums and Spanish guitar, for a touch of tropical melancholia. The vinyl comes housed in a jacket with original artwork of a train shuffling through the desert by Adriano Merigo. Each copy includes 2-sided postcard with lyrics, photos and notes designed by Eloise Leigh.

new dream / 12"

Clay Pedrini is a musician and singer from Milan. He released his only single, "New Dream" in 1984 on Sensation Records. Despite his limited output, Pedrini proved himself to be a shining star of the italo scene. Unfortunately, his career was cut short by a severe case of whiplash, but his fusion of analog keyboards and electronic trickery has stood the test of time. Clay had the idea for "New Dream" during a summer vacation. When he returned home and met up with his friend and fellow musician Manlio Cangelli, things began to develop. Influenced by Giorgio Moroder and Kraftwerk, together they wrote and recorded "New Dream" at B3 Studio in Milan in 1983. Arpeggios soar amidst cutting edge electronic percussion, but Clay's strong vocals take the lead on this tale of lost love and summer's end. The E-mu Drumulator, a sample-based drum-machine similar to the famous Linn Drum, was featured prominently. Additional electronic drums and keyboards were played by Massimo Costa, and backing vocals were done by Fulvio Monieri. The infectious chorus was sung by Lorella Ghilardi, the vocalist for Blue Russell, B. Rose, and Ella Morris. On the B-side there is an instrumental version with a mid-song breakdown and dubbed out chorus. The vinyl comes housed in a jacket with original photo of Clay playing a synthesizer framed by a television screen with block typography by Filippo Maniscalco of a female model lying on the floor grabbing the leg of a mannequin. Each copy includes 2-sided postcard with lyrics, photos and notes designed by Eloise Leigh. TIP !!

I wanna fly away / 12"

Blue Russell was the husband/wife duo of Manlio Cangelli & Lorella Ghilardi from Milan. Cangelli was a session musician and composer for many Italian singers, making music for commercial TV and working long days in the studio. He had a strong passion for the analog synthesizers of the time and discovered the latest drum machines. After appreciating a healthy dose of Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer, he set out to make dance music similar to the disco sounds of the late 70's. The duo would go on to write and produce many italo classics for artists such as B. Rose, Wish Key, Clay Pedrini, Jerry Moon, Scotch and more. "I Wanna Fly Away" was recorded in Milan in the spring of 1984 and released later that year on Disco Magic Records. The band created their signature sound using an Oberheim OB-X, Elka Synthex and Roland JX-3P as well as a cache of drum machines like the Oberheim DMX, Roland TR-808 and E-mu Drumulator. Cangelli uses double octaves, a technique where one hand plays the high notes of the chords on one synthesizer and at the same time another hand plays the bass notes of the same chords in a shorter time. This skillful alternation creates the unique arpeggios signature to Cangelli's stylized sound. Lorella's vocals are haunting and powerful. She oozes charisma as she sings about the loss of a lover and the sadness she feels, wishing she could escape this world. The B-side features an instrumental version with monolithic synth lines and throbbing drums. The vinyl comes housed in a jacket with original artwork of a Lorella standing in the cockpit of a plane, ready to fly away at any moment. Each copy includes 2-sided postcard with lyrics, photos and notes designed by Eloise Leigh.

Sophomore ep from Bézier entitled 'Telomeres'. Bézier is the moniker of San Francisco musician Robert Yang, who also is part of the illustrious Honey Soundsystem crew. 'Telomeres' is the follow up to Bézier's debut ep 'Ensconced', released in 2013. The title relates to themes of time, science, analytics and procedures. Bézier integrates the refrains of Spanish new-wave and italo-disco with the attitude and aggression of underground styles like synth-punk and industrial. These 6 tracks were written, produced and mixed by Bézier at his home studio in San Francisco between 2014 and 2015, and feature the debut of his own vocals. The vinyl comes housed in a jacket featuring an illustration by in-house designer Eloise Leigh riffing on early 80's computer graphics. The matted sleeve is meant to resemble the side panels of early computing instruments like Macintoshes or the Commodore 64. Each ep includes a postcard with a photograph of actual telomeres captured by a microscope camera by the Blackburn Lab at UCSF. 'Telomeres' are life's building blocks, changing the lengths of chromosomes to determine lifespan. This music is an investigation of a future in which time elongates as well as contracts. a rose is a rose / LP+7"

No More are a band from Kiel, Germany, founded in the summer of 1979. Their music is rooted in early post-punk / no-wave. No More began as a quartet with Andy A. Schwarz (vocals, guitar, bass), Tina Sanudakura (synthesizers), Christian Darc (drums, vocals) and Thomas Welz (bass, vocals). They self-released their debut 7" 4 song ep 'Too Late' in 1980. The ep was reviewed in the German 'Sounds' magazine as "strangely, archaic music, a brute sound that seems to be recorded with a purposely damaged 4-track”. After the departure of Thomas Welz at the end of 1980, No More worked as a trio until the end of 1983. As a trio the band explored musical minimalism and experimented with sequencers, drum synthesizers and rhythm boxes. There were no studios involved in the recording process. All recordings were made in bunkers, laundry rooms, cellars and rehearsal rooms. In 1981 the band released their 2nd single "Suicide Commando". The song spread internationally over the following years and became the band's biggest success. In 1982 No More released the mini-album 'A Rose Is A Rose' on 10", described by NME as "made by a trio of young Germans who appear to have fallen out of Lou Reed's 'Berlin' album". Songs on this mini-LP convey the desolate and bleak attitude of German youth in the early 80's. This reissue compiles all 8 tracks from the mini-LP, both tracks from the 'Suicide Commando' 7" plus 3 demos from 1982. As a bonus each LP includes the original 'Too Late' 7" ep remastered and housed in an exact copy of the original jacket. The jacket is a replica of the original 'A Rose Is A Rose' 10" artwork designed by Stefan Brose, resized for a 12" LP and laid out by Eloise Leigh. Each album includes an 11x14 double-sided, foldout poster insert with photos and lyrics. As Dj duo Optimo said of "Suicide Commando": 'A song that refuses to die. A couple of years after these Germans recorded this; it spread like a virus to become a cult classic. The virus is still spreading to this day".

world of rubber / 2x12"

Second Layer was a side project of Adrian Borland & Graham Bailey, members of post-punk band The Sound. The project was born from early punk band The Outsiders, which had both Graham and Adrian as members. Second Layer featured the voice and guitars of Adrian mixed with the bass and pioneering electronics of Graham. The music was bleak, detached, and desolate, but very beautiful. Honest songwriting and a harsh sonic backdrop set them apart from their peers. The band's 1st 2 singles were released by Tortch label. The 1st was 'Flesh As Property' ep in 1979 and the 2nd 'State Of Emergency' ep in 1980. By 1981 Second Layer had found a home on London-based label Cherry Red and released their debut album 'World Of Rubber' in november of that year. Full of hard mechanical sounds produced by Adrian's guitars and Graham's homemade drum machines, the album actively engages the listener. Songs are manic and twisted, pervaded with haunting subterranean atmospheres. Adrian's anguished voice tackles lyrics that are politically charged and morbidly fixated. Metallic guitar riffs, moody basslines, and Wasp synthesizer beeps are set to the band's cache of processed tape loops. They are a homegrown electronic garage band that sit alongside their contemporaries Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire and Public Image Limited. This deluxe 2xLP edition features the complete recorded output of Second Layer plus 5 unreleased demos from 1978-80. Each LP comes in an exact replica of the original metallic sliver and black jacket from the 1981 issue with a never seen before fold out poster made by the band in 1980 with liner notes, photos and press clippings. Though Adrian passed away in 1999, his genius lives on in these recordings. Clap the headphones on, squeeze the volume up..!

compulsion / 12"

Joe Crow is a post-punk musician from Birmingham, England. He was a member of legendary Brum band The Prefects, and hung on long enough after the name-change to appear on a couple of early Nightingales singles. In 1981 Joe began his solo career and recorded a 2-song demo "Compulsion" and "Absent Friends". Joe sent copies of the finished recordings to Cherry Red, who thanks to Lawrence of Felt, ended up releasing the single in 1982. An edited version of the single would later appear on the compilation 'Pillows & Prayers' that collected songs which originated as 45s or eps. Martin Gore of Depeche Mode subsequently covered "Compulsion" on his 'Counterfeit' ep in 1989 forever solidifying its status in the cannon of UK melancholic synth-pop. "Compulsion" and "Absent Friends" were originally intended as a double A-side. Composed, performed and recorded by Joe on an 8-track reel-to-reel at Sinewave Studio, Moseley Village in February 1981. Joe plays everything: guitar, bass, Boss Dr. Rhythm, Bee Gees Rhythm Machine, Wasp synthesizer, bongos stuffed with towels and an old tin tray for a snare drum. Everything was borrowed. "Compulsion" is an imaginary suicide note, a meditation on loss and grief. Its dark twin "Absent Friends" is an anti-song: no verses, choruses or middle-eight, some willfully odd chord progressions and plaintive yet melodic keyboard motif. Both songs are a spectral hybrid of alternating childlike and cynical vocals over lo-tech basement electronics with profound lyrics. This expanded 12" reissue adds 3 unreleased bonus tracks on the B-side taken from a mini-album of 9 songs, recorded at the same time as "Compulsion". Originally titled "Ken Blagdon Sings" with music by Joe Crow and lyrics by photographer Brendan Jackson, as a birthday present to the latter's girlfriend, Jacqui Neave. The whole session lasted one day and the line up was Brendan Jackson (alias Ken Blagdon; vocals/percussion), Joe Crow (vocals/bass/guitar/Boss Dr. Rhythm/Wasp synthesizer), Mark Rowson (drums), Helen Rowson (alto saxophone), Eamonn Duffy (Nightingales bassist; squawks) and Legs Akimbo (technicals). The jacket is an exact replica of the 1982 edition enlarged for the 12" format, featuring front and back photos of Joe from a dawn beach shoot at Hayling Island, Hampshire, England. Each copy includes a 2-sided newsprint insert with lyrics, never-before-seen photos and liner notes by Joe Crow and Robert Lloyd of the Nightingales. These songs are perfect new wave / post-punk tracks, full of attitude and dark romanticism.

private plane / international / 12"

Thomas Leer is an innovative electronic musician who was born in Port Glasgow, Scotland. He began singing for a local band at age 13, and was writing his own music by 18. By 1977, he had moved to London, where he fronted Pressure, a clash-esque punk group with fellow experimental Scottish musician Robert Rental. After hearing Kraftwerk, Leer became interested in synthesizers – not long after, he was exploring the experimental techniques of Eno, Zappa, Beefheart, Faust, and Can. In 1978, Thomas released his 1st single, "Private Plane"/"International", on his own Oblique Records. Both songs were recorded in his small Finsbury Park flat over 3 days, using a TEAC A3440 4-track recorder and an ALICE mixing board. The only effects used were a Watkins Copicat tape echo unit, Electo Harmonix DrQ filter, an old Roland drum machine, and a Stylophone. So as to not wake his sleeping girlfriend, Leer's vocals were nearly whispered, which lends them a textural, psychedelic quality. NME named "Private Plane" Single of the Week, and the hand-stamped first edition of 650 promptly sold out. For this expanded reissue, 2 bonus tracks have been added. "Kings Of Sham", from the 1981 Cherry Red Records sampler "Business As Usual", is perfect motorik trance, echoing Conny Plank's 1970's productions. "Saving Grace" is the extended instrumental version of Leer's 2nd single "All About You" from 1982, a slow-burning cosmic work-out chock-full of anthemic synth riffs. The jacket is an exact replica of the 1978 handmade edition enlarged for the 12" format, featuring a cut and paste collage by Thomas. Each copy includes a two-sided newsprint insert with never-before-seen photos, an interview, and liner notes by Professor Keith R. Laws. 37 years later this is fresh UK DiY post-punk, compelling pop with a dark heart, vacillating between the pretty disturbing and the disturbingly pretty. Essential !!

experiments in incest / LP

Shoc Corridor was the London post-punk quartet of Paul O'Carroll (voice, synth), Andy Garnham (synth, bass, drum), Chris Davis (guitar, bass, e-bow) and Nogi Prass (synth) named after the Sam Fuller film from 1963. Chris met Nogi shortly after moving to London in 1979, started playing music together, fell madly in love and decided to form a band. They recruited Andy, who had previously played in a band with Steve Luscombe of Blancmange, and lyricist and vocalist Paul. A home studio was set up at Andy's flat in Notting Hill, where the band recorded and rehearsed. More interested in studio experimentation than live performance, the band only played a handful of gigs. Their influences were wide reaching: Kraftwerk, Neu, Cabaret Voltaire, Eno, PIL and Joy Division. Their equipment list included a Korg MS-20, Wasp, Pro-One, Roland TR-808, WEM Copicat, guitars, bass, e-bow and an assortment of effects pedals. The crucial 5th member of the band was, of course, a TEAC reel-to-reel 4-track recorder. After recording a 4-song demo they were offered a deal by Shout Records. The debut 12" single, 'A Blind Sign', was released in autumn 1982 and the band booked a studio to record an album's worth of songs that winter. But Nogi received notification from the home office that she would have to leave the UK when her visa expired at the end of the year. Chris was faced with a dilemma: follow Nogi to Israel or continue with the band. Nogi & Chis recorded their tracks for the album and left London shortly after. Paul & Andy were left to complete the album at Ollie's Studio with Dutch engineer Paul Groothuis. It was titled 'Experiments In Incest' and released in march 1983. 6 songs, clocking in at almost 40 minutes, the album is largely instrumental pieces built around electronic rhythm tracks and layers of ethereal keyboard melodies. Evocative and dreamy, the music escorts you on a tour of icy landscapes, with Paul's occasional deep, rich vocals guiding the way. As one reviewer stated, this album is a "hypnotic electronic soundtrack music for a movie of the mind". Each LP comes in an exact replica of the original neon red jacket, featuring stick figure artwork by Paul O'Carroll. A 6-page booklet of liner notes, lyrics, photos and press clippings designed by Eloise Leigh is also included.

muscle up / 2x12"

Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem Records have teamed up again to release another volume of gay porn soundtracks by San Francisco-based musician and producer, Patrick Cowley. Perhaps one of the most revolutionary and influential people in the canon of disco music, Cowley created his own brand of hi-nrg dance music, 'the San Francisco sound'. Born in Buffalo, NY on october 19, 1950, Patrick moved to San Francisco at the age of 21. He studied at the City College of San Francisco where he founded the Electronic Music Lab. During this time, Patrick, along with his classmates Maurice Tani and Art Adcock, would create radio jingles and electronic pieces using the school's equipment: 1st a Putney, then an E-MU System, and finally a Serge synthesizer. He would make experimental soundtracks by blending various types of music and adapting them to the synthesizer. By the mid-70's, Patrick's synthesizer skills landed him a job composing and producing songs for disco superstar Sylvester, including hits like "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)", "Dance Disco Heat" and "Stars". This helped Patrick obtain more work as a remixer and producer. His 18-minute long remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" and his production work with edgy new-wave band Indoor Life were both of particular note. By 1981, Patrick had released a string of dance 12" singles, like "Menergy" and "Megatron Man". He also had founded Megatone Records and released his debut album, 'Menergy'. Around this time Patrick was hospitalized and diagnosed with a then-unknown illness: that which would later be called AIDS. Throughout 1982, he recorded 2 more hi-nrg hits, "Do You Wanna Funk" for Sylvester, and "Right On Target" for Paul Parker, as well as a 2nd solo album 'Mind Warp'. On November 12, 1982, he passed away. In 1979 Patrick was contacted by John Coletti, owner of famed gay porn company Fox Studio in Los Angeles. Patrick jumped on this offer and sent reels of his college compositions from the 70's to John in LA. Coletti then used a variable speed oscillator to adjust the pitch and speed of Patrick's songs in-sync with the film scene. 'Muscle Up' is a collection of Cowley's instrumental songs recorded between 1973 & 1980 found in the Fox Studio vaults. This compilation also includes bonus compositions found in the basement of Megatone Records owner John Hedges and the attic of former bandmate Maurice Tani. Influenced by Tomita, Wendy Carlos, and Giorgio Moroder, Patrick crafted an electronic sound from his collection of synthesizers, percussion, modified guitars, and hand-built equipment. The listener enters a world of forbidden vices evocative of Patrick's time spent in the bathhouses of San Francisco. The songs on 'Muscle Up' are divided into 4 sides, each showcasing a different facet of Cowley's work. Side 1 opens with an ambient journey through the Amazon. Tension builds on side 2, with the instrumental demo version of the slow-chugging masterpiece "I Need Somebody To Love Tonight". On sides 3 & 4 things go interstellar with ecstatic space-funk and galactic workouts. Featuring 75 minutes of music, this compilation contains soundtrack music from 2 Fox Studio films, 'Muscle Up' & 'School Daze', plus additional songs from the same era, never before released on vinyl. The tapes were restored and transferred using the same speed and pitch settings. The vinyl comes housed in a extra wide spine jacket and giant fold-out poster featuring a handmade collage using photography and xerox graphics of classic gay porn imagery from the Fox Studio vaults by Berlin-based artist Gwenael Rattke with an essay from Maurice Tani. For Patrick's 65th birthday, Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem Records present a glimpse into the futuristic world of a young genius. These recordings shine a new light on the experimental side of a disco legend who was taken too soon.

clifford darling, please don't live in the past / 2x12"

Severed Heads are one of the longest surviving bands to emerge from the Australian post-punk independent music scene. They began in Sydney in 1979, incorporating elements of industrial noise-generation, tape cutting & looping and electronic sound synthesis. As the project developed song-structures and vocals were employed in a more-or-less recognizable mutant electro-pop style. After many line-up changes featuring Garry Bradbury and psychedelic guitarist Simon Knuckey, Severed Heads was the vehicle for composer Tom Ellard. In 1985 their record label asked them to release a retrospective, so they dragged out bits that we had lying around from 1979 up til 1983. The compilation was titled 'Clifford Darling Please Don't Live In The Past', spread out into a montage over 4 sides of vinyl. Bradbury and Ellard would fuss each bit and sling it on their new digital recorder, and since they still have the digital recorder, this reissue is made directly from the bits assembled 20 years ago. This compilation includes live recordings, raw demos, unreleased studio recordings and solo pieces from each member of the band during from the first 5 years. Their early music was characterized by the use of tape loops, noisy arrangements of synthesizers and other dissonant sound sources in the general category of industrial music. After several releases in that vein, Severed Heads began incorporating various popular music tropes, such as a consistent 4/4 rhythm, strong melodic lines, resolving chord arrangements and the occasional vocal. This move was underscored by the incorporation of mimetic devices, such as drum machines and bass synthesizers. The result was a striking hybrid of the avant-garde industrial and pop. Housed in a jacket featuring brightly colored, distorted, VHS graphics output by Stephen Jones' video synthesizer created by Tom Ellard video piece 'Kato Gets The Girl' in 1985, designed by Eloise Leigh. Each copy includes a fold-out poster with a color video still photo on one side and liner notes and credits on the other. 30 years later Severed Heads' perverse creativity is still paving the way for powerful imaginative challenging music far and wide.

lamborghini / petrol / 12"

Dark Entries digs deeper in to the archives of Severed Heads, one of the longest surviving bands to emerge from the Australian post-punk independent music scene. They began in Sydney in 1979, incorporating elements of 'industrial' noise-generation, tape cutting & looping and electronic sound synthesis. As the project developed song-structures and vocals were employed in a more-or-less recognizable mutant electro pop style. In 1986 the band released the 12" single 'Petrol' on Nettwerk Records. We've decided to shed light on the evolution of 'Petrol' with this ep showcasing 4 earlier incarnations of what became an instant synth-pop classic. "Petrol", originally titled "Lamborghini", was written by Garry Bradbury and Tom Ellard in 1981. The 1st version of the song featured vocals by Finoa Graham and music by Tom Ellard. "Lamborghini" was featured on a compilation of Experimental Australian bands titled 'Entrave Et Étouffement, From Australia...' released by L'Invitation Au Suicide in april 1982. Djs in Chicago discovered the import compilation and "Lamborghini" became a proto-house secret weapon, traded on mix tapes. In july 1982, the band was invited to record several songs on Metro TV in Sydney to demonstrate the video synthesizer, a new piece of equipment played by Stephen Jones. The video synthesizer was installed into Metro's control room above the main studio to process the performance in real time on 2 cameras while recording to video. Tom Ellard & Garry Bradbury were using analog synths and tape recorders along with the screaming guitar work of Simon Knuckey, while Garry took over vocal duties. In 1984 Tom took another stab at the song, re-recording and singing "Petrol" for the compilation 'Beyond The Southern Cross', a double compilation album of electronic and post-punk bands from Australia and New Zealand. Finally in 1985, the band went into the Terse Tapes studio with producer Robert Racic to record "Petrol" for a 7" single release on Volition Records. Featured here is the B-side of the 7", a cut-up dub version remixed by Racic and packed full of intensity. Housed in a jacket featuring brightly colored, distorted, VHS graphics output by Stephen Jones' video synthesizer created by Tom Ellard video piece 'Kato Gets The Girl' in 1985, designed by Eloise Leigh. Each copy includes a postcard with notes and original hand-written lyrics by Garry Bradbury. More than 30 years later Severed Heads are still paving the way for powerful imaginative challenging music far and wide.

Crash Course In Science are a post-punk band formed in 1979 in Philadelphia. The band members, Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago and Michael Zodorozny met while attending art school. They began to experiment with crude electronics and off-beat writing. CCIS avoids conventional instrumentation by using toy instruments and kitchen appliances to augment the distorted guitar, drums and synthesized beats. Their 1st single "Cakes In The Home" was released in 1979 and their 4-song 12" ep 'Signals From Pier Thirteen' in 1981. 'Jump Over Barrels' was recorded at the Third Story Studio in Philadelphia in 1981, one year after 'Signals From Pier Thirteen'. The songs remained unmixed and unreleased at that time for a proposed album titled 'Near Marineland'. Lyrically the song tackles overcoming obstacles, be them self imposed or otherwise with vocals interplay between Michael and Mallory. On A-side are the original mix and a demo mix from 1981. Then on the flip is a brand new remix by prolific Ann Arbor producer Charles Manier, a pseudonym of Tadd Mullinix, who toughens up the track. Also included is an unreleased demo version of the song from 1980, possibly at its rawest and stripped down skeleton. Housed in a custom-made jacket by our in-house designer Eloise Leigh that incorporates abstract barrel symbols rolling in different positions with the jumping squiggles also changing accordingly riffs of synth knobs and sound wave visuals.

The Frozen Autumn is an Italian darkwave band, formed in may 1993 in Turin, Italy. Originally the solo project of singer, keyboardist and synth programmer Diego Merletto, guitarist Claudio Brosio joined on during early studio sessions and live performances. Together they recorded and released 2 albums, 'Pale Awakening' in 1995 and 'Fragments Of Memories' in 1997. In 1998, Claudio left the band and Diego recruited Arianna (aka Froxeanne) who sings, programs and composes. After 18 months of work, The Frozen Autumn's 3rd album, 'Emotional Screening Device', was released in april 2002. 'Time Is Just A Memory' is a 6-track overview of songs from The Frozen Autumn's 1st 3 albums. Characterized by a blend of melancholic vocals, atmospheric gothic-wave and 80's style electro-pop, the duo call their style 'frozen wave'. The Frozen Autumn have stated that labelmates Clan Of Xymox have been their main source of inspiration over the years. Other influences include Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, The Sisters of Mercy, X-Mal Deutschland, David Sylvian & Depeche Mode. These 6 tracks stand out for their rich melodies, from the guitar-laden early tracks "Dusk Is Like A Dagger", "Wait For Nothing", "There's No Time To Recall", and "This Time", to the electronic sheen on later songs "Is Everything Real?" and "Silence Is Talking". The release is housed in a custom-made jacket by Peer Lebrecht, from German electro/synth-pop band The Dust Of Basement, incorporating a photograph by Diego over a textured background that recalls early 4AD designs. Each copy comes with a double sided 11x11 insert with lyrics and notes.

the sparrows and the nightingales / 12"

Wolfsheim are a synth-pop duo from Hamburg, Germany consisting of Markus Reinhardt (music) & Peter Heppner (lyrics and vocals). The band was founded in 1987 by Markus Reinhardt & Pompejo Ricciardi and was named after Meyer Wolfsheim, a fictional character from F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel 'The Great Gatsby'. Ricciardi soon left the band and was replaced by Peter Heppner, a childhood friend of Reinhardt's. Together they produced their 1st demo tape, 'Ken Manage', in 1988. After making a 2nd demo tape, 'Any But Pretty', in 1989, Wolfsheim applied at various labels until they caught the attention of independent record label Strange Ways Records. They are best known for their debut breakthrough single, "The Sparrows And The Nightingales", the 1st single to be released on Strange Ways in 1991. The band's musical style takes cues from the 80's new romantics, new-wave, synth-pop, and darkwave. The track's sombre synths were produced by Carlos Peron of Yello. Reinhardt says the lyric was inspired by 'The Great Gatsby', "in the 'onomatopoeic tension' between predator and security". Over 6 minutes, the narrator describes being lost, unsure of where his life is heading, using highly metaphorical language. On the flip is a brand new remix by German producer Ancient Methods, a pseudonym of Michael 'Trias' Wollenhaupt, who provides a driving, EBM-leaning, amphetamine-laced club ready cut. Designer Eloise Leigh has updated the record's original design with 2 sparrows enclosed in a blood moon circle against a deep black purple backdrop. Each copy comes with a black and white photo postcard notes by Carlos Peron and the song's lyrics. This release comes in time to celebrate the single's 25th anniversary.

Λένα Πλάτωνος (Lena Platonos) is a Greek musician, pianist and music composer. One of the pioneers of Greek electronic music, she remains active today. Lena was born in Heraklion, Crete, and grew up in Athens. She began learning how to play the piano at the age of 2 and became a professional pianist before turning 18. Soon afterwards, she received a scholarship to study in the the Berlin and Vienna Academies , where she was exposed to jazz, rock and Middle Eastern music. She returned to Greece in the late 70's and began working with the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation. Released in 1984, 'Μάσκες Ηλίου' ('Sun Masks') was Lena Platonos' 1st record to feature her own words and vocals. All instruments were performed by Lena herself. 'Sun Masks' was inspired by Argentine writer, Julio Cortázar as well as the film 'The Wall' by Pink Floyd. "I began to reverse my thought process, to let melodies fade out, to turn to minimalism, to experiment on my Yamaha C60 synthesizer and a variety of 'boxes' which I used to change the sound of my voice as well as the sound of the synthesizer" says Lena. The album featured experiments with different sounds and a new batch of electronic equipment, such as the legendary Roland TR 808 drum machine. Lena narrates each song in deadpan fashion, skillfully reciting her surreal Greek poetry. Her lyrics deal with the futility of love, the gap of human relationships, consumerist alienation in the bourgeois lifestyle of the 80's. The jacket is an exact replica of the 1984 edition, featuring a photograph of Lena wearing sunglasses or 'sun masks'. Each copy includes a 2-sided 11"x11" insert with lyrics in both Greek with English, and liner notes by Lena.

'Helden Platz', a long out of print 12" maxi single from seminal Italian electronic act Kirlian Camera. Keyboardist/vocalist Angelo Bergamini founded the project in Parma in 1979 and named it after an electronic device that photographs the electromagnetic halo around objects and living beings. By 1980, Angelo had recruited singer Simona Buja, keyboardist Fabrizio Chiari, and bassist Mauro Montacchini. Their demo cassette, 'Dawn', attracted the attention of Italian Records, a popular independent label. Over the next few years the band would release their st mini-LP, 'Kirlian Camera', the full length 'It Doesn't Matter, Now' and the singles "Communicate", "Edges", and "Blue Room". The latter was a significant hit, eventually landing them a deal with Virgin Records. By 1987 the line up consisted of Angelo Bergamini on all instruments, Charlie Mallozzi on electronic drums and Simona Buja on vocals. Virgin wanted the band to provide another hit single in order to exploit the success of 'Blue Room', refusing to release the band's less commercial material. In 1987 the band went Lark Studio at Carimate Castle, Italy to record with italo-disco producer Oderso Rubini. Thanks to the insistence of Bergamini, the label agreed to release "Helden Platz", German for "Heroes' Square', in 1987. The song features Kirlian Camera's brand of dark wave, marked by haunting melodies, slow moving synth washes, and orchestral strings. The song features the stark, dramatic vocals of Simona Buja, who sings about the 'blue blood of winter' in a tale of Germany and Austria during World War II. Included here is the extended 12" mix, the 7" edit, plus the original B-side "Burial", an instrumental that evokes a funeral procession soundtrack. It is housed in the original jacket, featuring a photo of a headstone from Zentralfriedhof Cemetery in Vienna. Each copy includes a 2-sided postcard with lyrics and photos of the band.

Lunapark is the trio of Burkhard Ballein, Klaus 'Schlips' Gebauer, Reinhard 'Zoppen' Benisch from Wuppertal, Germany. Formed in 1981 when the boys were dissatisfied with their surrounding musical environment. They packed their instruments and a cassette recorder and set off to create their own brand of Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW 'New German Wave'). Their influences included The Beatles, Colloseum, Roxy Music, Frank Zappa as well as Sex Pistols, Ian Dury & The Blockheads, Blondie and The Cure. 'Gefangene Vögel' ('Prisoner Birds') is their debut album released by Intakt-Records, Stuttgart in 1982. Utilizing a simple set up of guitar, bass, drums, drum-computer, Korg MS-10 and Korg MS-20 they recorded 10 tracks that make up the album. Songs bridge the Belgian-type industrial and cold sounds with NDW quirkiness. In the vein of Sad Lovers and Giants, and Schleimer K they blend post-punk and new-wave music with electronic influences. All songs are sung in German with monotone vocals and epitomized the urban Zeitgeist of the Cold War. The vinyl comes housed in a replica of the original jacket design, which features a drawing of birds on a grid. There are 4 different color versions of the screen printed jacket: blue, yellow, turquoise and here in magenta. household shocks / LP

16-track compilation of UK DiY/synth/new-wave/post-punk originally released in 1980. The album showcases 9 bands from the thriving post-punk scene in Scunthorpe and the North of England. Operating on a shoestring budget, co-producers Chris Leaning and Paul Singleton (both of One Gang Logic), released 'Household Shocks' on Stark Products, a label they founded in 1979. At almost 50 minutes of music, the album took 4 weeks to produce at the Studio Playground in Lincoln. It was supported heavily by the late Radio 1 DJ John Peel. In july 1980 Paul Singleton and Chris Leaning opened a record shop in Lincolnshire, England. It opened under the name 'All Tomorrow's Parties', but later moved to the city center and was renamed 'Parade'. Through their growing local music scene and the separation of economic classes, their shop became the hangout for the local punk movement. It was there that the idea for 'Household Shocks', a compilation of their friend's bands, was born. Thunderboys offer 3 punky pop blazers and feature Carmel McCourt who who subsequently achieved chart success with her band Carmel. Product Of Reason contribute 3 haunting synthesizer heavy numbers. Sinking Ships supply 2 tracks of off-kilter dubbed out angst. Juveniles provide 2 power pop jams. Mystery Girls supply 1 track of quirky post-punk that recalls The Prats. Defectors, a female fronted quartet featuring COUM Transmissions affiliate Tony Menzies, grant us 1 superb track of somber gothic new-wave. Fault 151 serve a slice of wistful Flying Nun-esque indie pop featuring a 14-year old bassist. Urbantech, a short-lived synth-punk outfit, deliver one delirious track. One Gang Logic contribute 2 metallic synthesizer drenched pieces and close the album with a somber atmosphere. The vinyl comes housed in replica of Chris Leaning's original jacket design, which features a black and white photograph of a doll shocked by a vacuum cleaner. Each LP includes a copy of the double sided 11x11 insert that was included with the original pressing.

Dario Dell'Aere is a new-wave musician, producer and singer from Milan, Italy. At the end of the 70's Dario performed in a mime show influenced by the glam cliches of David Bowie. In 1979, he met Victor Life outside a cinema, and began a lifelong collaboration of projects: Diamond Dogs, Ice Eyes and Fockewulf 190. Musically, the duo were inspired by the Human League's 'Reproduction' and John Foxx's 'Metamatic', while they took visual cues from the new romantics Visage and Ultravox. With the Fockewulf 190 moniker, they created their own dark blend of italo-disco and new-wave, and released the hit singles "Gitano" and "Body Heat" in 1984. At the end of 1984, the duo took a break, and Dario went into the studio to record his debut solo single. "Eagles In The Night" was released in 1985 on Market Record, and is one of the most coveted italo-disco 12"s. Clocking in at over 8-minutes, the song features xylophone-esque synth hooks and Dario's powerful, booming vocals. Dario sings of a spirit that flies on high, searching for a partner in true love. Backing vocals were provided by Dario's sister, Nora Dell'Aere. On the B-side is a shorter instrumental version with the occasional 'oh wacky co-co' from Dario. The sleeve is an exact replica of the original 1985 edition, which features a black and white drawing by Dario's wife, Tiziana Dell'Aere. Brand Image is a trio formed in Bergamo, Italy in 1983. Created by the same group of musicians as their previous project Some Bizarre. The line-up is Marino Scarabelli (music, producer), Tiberio 'Tyber' Scarfone (arrangement, producer) and Stefano Brignoli (lyrics) and vocalist Mauro Farina. Originally, Stefano sang the song but his performance was too close to the brand new Some Bizarre single, so they recruited Mauro for distinction. "Are You Loving" was recorded at Regson Studio in Milan in 1983 and released on Il Discotto the same year. Similar in approach to Some Bizarre, the song's music was composed by Marino as lyrics were written by Stefano with sitting on the sofa in the studio. The band created their signature sound using a Mini Moog, Prophet 5, Korg Synthesizer, Linn Drum. Mauro's vocals are warm as he aggressively debates internally going out dancing or staying in and ordering take out. Where "Don't Be Afraid" ”was the trio's 1st experience at songwriting, "Are You Loving"” became a popular hit and gave the group strength and enthusiasm to continue this musical path. Tiberio was a fan of the Italian pop group Pooh” and their song "Non Siamo In Pericolo" ”had a solo break with an electric guitar and background bells that section inspired the guitar and claps solo in "Are You Loving". Enrica Danesi makes a return appearance with her signature call-and-response back up vocals during the chorus. On the B-side is the instrumental version with extended breaks, drum claps and dubbed out bass lines. The vinyl comes housed in an exact replica of the original 1983 edition with bright yellow and magenta line graphics against a black background. Each copy includes a double-side postcard insert with lyrics and notes.

Space Art was the French electronic duo of Dominique Perrier (keyboards, vocoder) and Roger Rizzitelli (drums, percussion). Between 1977 and 1981, they released 3 albums of comsic synth-pop, in which they laid much groundwork for French electronic music to follow. After their 3rd album in 1981, they toured around the world with Jean Michel Jarre in support for his 'Concerts In China' album. Space Art's 3rd single "Nous Savons Tout" was released in 1978 on IF Records. Their sound was similar to Jarre's early analog albums, but with the addition of real drums. Dominique plays an ARP Odyssey, Clavinet, Eminent, and Minimoog, maximizing their warm textures. Roger plays the drums in an intricate fashion, influenced subtly by jazz fusion. "Nous Savons Tout" features an early prototype of the Vocoder, which the band used to create the chorus. On the flip is the slower "Melodie Moderne", an electronic take on progressive 70's rock. Both tracks were recorded at Studio Ferber Paris in June 1978. Like Richard Pinhas/Heldon and Yellow Magic Orchestra, Space Art created their own brand of dark space disco, paving the way for bands like Air and Mellow. The record comes in a sleeve featuring the original cover art of a firefighter crossing a burnt landscape, painted by Gilles Lacombe. Each LP includes a postcard with liner notes by surviving member Dominique Perrier. The sounds here evoke a Parisian noir thriller set in a discotheque circa '78. Series-A was the duo of Sam Anderson aka Dj Maestro and Dave Webb (aka Kid Fresh). Sam & Dave both grew up listening to the sounds of the Electrifying Mojo on WJLB in Detroit. They met in 1983 at a Dj gig that they were both hired to play. In 1986, they collaborated on the Nu-Sound II Crew project. After developing a friendship with Juan Atkins, they became hip to the emerging new club sounds that were to become electro and techno. Their subsequent project, Series-A, was named after different car model numbers, but also hints at the evolution of humankind into a new species. In 1987, Series-A recorded the single "Evolution ⁵ Technology" at Spectrum Sounds Studio in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Their set up was a vocoder, E-mu Emulator III, Roland 909 drum machine, and an Otari 24-Track recorder. They landed a record deal with Satellite Records in Burbank, California, which had been founded by Pete Moore of The Miracles. After pressing 50 promotional copies, the label ran into financial problems, and the record never reached a full release. Taking cues Kraftwerk, Grand Master DST, Grandmaster Flash & Jam Master Jay, Series-A created dark electro beats in an era when sampling appeared to be the future of music. Lyrically the song addresses our species' entry into the technological age. For this ep reissue, the '7" Mix' and 'Dub Mix' are included on the A-side. On the flip is a new remix by prolific Ann Arbor producer JTC, an alias of Tadd Mullinix (aka Dabrye, SK-1, & Charles Manier). JTC speeds up and expands the song to 7 minutes. Drawing on influences from Ron Hardy to Jeff Mills, he drives around suburban techno landscapes while simultaneously launching the listener into deep space. Nagamatzu were the British duo of Andrew Lagowski (SETI, Legion, Terror Against Terror) on synths, guitar, and programming and Stephen Jarvis (Pure Motorised Instinct, Terraform) on synths and bass. Formed in 1982 after messing around with old tape machines and drum boxes, making numerous contributions to international compilations and erratically releasing their own cassettes. Their name comes from a character in JG Ballard's 'Atrocity Exhibition' and their music reflects his influence. Nagamatzu self-released their debut cassette 'Shatter Days' in 1983 after messing around with old tape machines, drum boxes and effects. 'Above This Noise' is a compilation of 9 songs recorded in the period between the release of 'Sacred Islands Of The Mad' in 1986 and 'Igniting The Corpse' in 1991. It gathers tracks which surfaced on some of the international compilation cassette releases that the band were invited to contribute to in the 80's as well as some previously unreleased songs. The band's working method was for Andrew to 1st record a backing track, usually rhythm, sequence, samples. Then both members would layer more electronics, samples, guitar and bass over the top, recording the whole piece in one take. These instrumentals combine stuttering bass, guitar bursts and funeral keyboards draped over a dragging drum machine beat, calling to mind Clock DVA, early New Order or Cocteau Twins. Their sound is full of complex rhythm patterns and dark electronics. The vinyl comes housed in jacket silver and black designed by Eloise Leigh. Each LP includes a fold out poster with liner notes by Stephen Jarvis and an early gig flyer. Finally rescued from the UK DiY cassette underground and restored, 'Above This Noise' presents 9 Nagamaztu tracks for the 1st time ever on vinyl.

Gianluigi 'Gigi' Farina and Francesco Rago are to be counted among italo-disco's true originators. Operating as a duo under many monikers, they brought us masterpieces such as Wanexa's "The Man From Colours", ‘Lectric Workers "Robot Is Systematic", and Decadance's "On And On". Their sound is propulsive and ethereal in equal measure; dense, psychedelic, and tinged with melancholy. "The Man From Colours" was recorded in Milan in 1982 and released on Discomagic Records the same year. The song's music was composed by Rago and Farina, with lyrics written by Xenia Monneret who was only 16 at the time. Mournful synth pads are buoyed by an 808 groove, while Lyana Galis provides haunting vocals, singing of a man who will bring color to this grey world. "The Man From Colours" was influential on early house and techno music thanks to support from WBMX in Chicago and and WJLB in Detroit. It was later a cornerstone in the 90's Hague electro scene, frequently appearing in Dj sets by I-f and Intergalactic Gary. On the B-side is the instrumental version with extended breaks, drum claps and additional vocoder verses. There is a slight warble in the beginning of each version that was due to the band re-recording multiple takes on the same reel of tape. The record comes housed in a newly designed die-cut jacket by Eloise Leigh, updating the pink and green color scheme of the original Discomagic Records label. Each copy includes a double-sided postcard insert with lyrics, notes, and a never seen before photo from a fashion show.

sandy eyes / 12"

Zwischenfall formed in Belgium in 1982 with Michael Sass (synths), Martin Urban (bass/vocals) and Stephan Kraemer (guitar/drums). They were united by their interest in combining electronic and traditional instruments, which developed the basis for 1982 demo recordings. By chance Patrick Codenys of the Belgian electro pioneers Front 242, heard 2 songs and decided to record a 4-song ep. The 'Heute' ep was released in 1983 after a week of recording in Front 242's private studio under the direction of sound-whiz Daniel B. In 1984 Martin Urban left the band and was replaced by vocalist Iben Larssen and bassist Thomas Kürsten. They recorded their 2nd 12" single, "Sandy Eyes", which contained a remake of their song "Flucht", sung in the English this time. Some fairly revolutionary techniques were used, including the introduction of sampling (with an Emulator I and Ensoniq Mirage), and 'gated reverb', in which the sound of a large reverb room was processed through a Yamaha CS15's envelope follower. This record was originally released in 1984 on both Les Disques du Crépuscule and Fuzz Dance, packaged in 3 different covers. Our reissue ep features 2 bonus tracks from the 1984 recording sessions previously unreleased on vinyl: the saxophone drenched instrumental "Polar Magazine" and street beat dance track "Sacred Time". The record comes housed in a newly designed die-cut jacket by Eloise Leigh, updating the magenta and yellow color scheme of the Fuzz Dance release. Each copy includes a double-sided insert with lyrics, notes, and never seen before photos.

Die Form is a French post-industrial and electronic band formed in 1977-1978. Die Form is the primary project of electronic musician and multimedia artist Philippe Fichot. He began by recording a number of experimental cassette releases in the late 1970s and formed the Bain Total label to release these early cassettes, as well as various side projects such as Krylon Hertz, Camera Obscura, Eva-Johanna Reichstag, Hurt and Fine Automatic. In 1982 Die Form released their debut vinyl album, 'Die Puppe' in a limited edition of 1000 copies. 'Zoo' is a compilation of 10 tracks recorded during the "Die Puppe" sessions from 1980-82. These were the 1st esoteric electronic experiments, often improvised. Underlying themes of eroticism, death, and other 'taboo' subjects become apparent in both the music and the album artwork, which Philippe also produced. The album was recorded with entirely analog equipment, including a Roland MC4 Micro-Composer, TR-808 Rhythm Composer, ARP 2600, and Kawai 60F recorded to a Revox B77 reel to reel tape machine. Songs range from hypnotic, minimalistic proto-IDM to daring experimental sound manipulation. 4 of these songs were featured as a bonus 7" to accompany the 1989 vinyl reissue of "Die Puppe" but remixed for the project. The remaining 6 songs were also remixed and released on CD in 2001. The front cover was designed by Eloise Leigh and features a black and white photograph by Philipe. Each album includes a double sided post card with liner notes and a rare photo of the band.

Bocal 5 were a no-wave art group composed of Doc Pilot (synths, vocals), Zouka Dzaza (bass), Florian Guillou (synths), Mickey Lepron (electronic drums, bass) and Evy Tinguette (lead vocals). The project was born in november 1980 in Tours, France as the brain child of Doc Pilot. Between 1981 & 1986 Bocal 5 recorded one 7" single and a cassette-only album before taking a year off in 1984 to launch X-Ray Pop. Influenced by Erik Satie, Brigitte Bardot, Suicide and Young Marble Giants, they call their music 'minimum naďve new-wave'. 'Musique Electronique' is a 19-track compilation of songs recorded across 1983, most of which have never been released on vinyl before. 16 tracks appeared on the 'From Bocal 5 To X-Ray Pop' album originally released on cassette by Sound of Pig in 1984. Both tracks from their debut 7" originally released in MB5 1984 are included and show a progression in sound as a result of newer recording equipment and techniques. Also present is a song from the tape compilation 'Andreas N°3 L'Animal' released by Fraction Studio in 1984. Armed with a Korg 770, MS-10, Prophet Pro-One, Roland TR-707 and TB-808 they crafted their own brand of quirky synthesized electronic pop. Songs are short, concise and well structured; richly textured, moving at a quick speed with hardly a pause. Evy's pouting, tongue-in-cheek vocals (sung in French) come together for a catchy, sensuous, danceable, eccentric psychedelic ride. This collection shows the group's sense of humor, vitality and carefree playfulness. Each jacket displays a bright neon green collage of photos and ephemera from the band's archives designed by Eloise Leigh that exudes the project's DiY spirit. Each copy includes a 6-page xeroxed booklet with photos, original artwork and press clippings.

dirty songs / 12"

4-track ep by Swiss musician Carlos Perón, founding member of Yello. Carlos was born in 1952 in Zurich and began collecting music at a young age. Inspired after attending a concert of Karlheinz Stockhausen in the 60's, he began to compose Musique Concrete pieces using a 4-track reel to reel and found sounds. In 1979 Perón founded the trio Yello with musician Boris Blank and vocalist Dieter Meier. Yello released their 1st album in 1980 and the following year Carlos released his 1st solo album 'Impersonator'. In 1983 Carlos left Yello in order to pursue a solo career and released the soundtrack to 'Die Schwarze Spinne' and 1984 his 2nd solo album 'Nothing Is True; Everything Is Permitted'. In 1988, Belgian label LD Records released a 4-song ep of instrumental tracks from 1984 that predated, influenced and became staples in the New Beat scene. 'Dirty Songs' is a collection of songs from Carlos Perón recorded between 1980 and 1986. The recordings were made with the core set up of an ARP 2600, Roland's Drumatix, TB-303 and TR-808. "Nothing Is True; Everything Is Permitted (Instrumental)" recorded in 1984 is a slow burner with dark, gloomy atmospherics, presented here in an extended version with a bonus intro. The song was inspired by William S. Borroughs' 'Naked Lunch' and paints a bleak futuristic landscape. "Breaking In (Instrumental)", from 1984, is a crossover of electronic body music and pitched down Chicago acid house featuring overplayed snares by hand though an Ovomaltine Box. Originally featured on the soundtrack for 'Die Schwarze Spinne', the song is about breaking into a large pharmaceutical company to steal drugs. On the B-side is "A Dirty Song (Instrumental)", originally recorded in 1986 and released by Play It Again Sam in 1988. The song uses one of the earliest Roland SH synthesizers, the SH-1 A, as a solo instrument and is strikingly aggressive with percussive rhythms. "Et" was recorded in 1980 on a 4-track and later and remixed to 8-tracks in 1984 for the 'Frigorex' ep, which is where this extended version comes from. Featuring eerie, cut up vocals and Dadaist lyrics by Isa Nogara atop a proto-techno beat. The jacket features a never before seen black and white photo of Carlos taken in 1988. Each album includes an double-sided postcard featuring the cover art from the 'Frigorex' ep. Prepare to make your own movie to the Swiss John Carpenter soundtrack vibes of Carlos Perón.

silence / 2x12"

East Wall was an Italian electronic dark wave band started by Fabrizio Chiari (ex-keyboardist of Kirlian Camera) and Wilma Notari in 1982. After a series of demos and live performances, the duo recruited Angelo Bergamini of Kirlian Camera to help with arrangement and synthesizers. They released their debut single "Eyes Of Glass" in 1985 which had huge success in Germany, leading to a deal with ZYX. By 1991 the band consisted of Fabrizio Chiari (synthesizer, electronics, keyboards), Tiziana Wells (vocals, synthesizer) and Angelo Bergamini (synthesizer, piano, arrangement). At the beginning of the year, they recorded their next batch of songs at Prominence Studio in Cremona and A Love Sound Studio in Piacenza. 'Silence' was self released by the band in 1991. The lead track "Silence" was a left-over song by Kirlian Camera recorded in 1985 with vocals by Simona Buja under the alias Lorenza Larini. It was recorded largely using a variety of now-classic Roland, Yamaha, and Oberheim synthesizers. The album displays East Wall's maturity and unique aesthetics, with instrumental pieces reminiscent of Angelo Badalamenti' Twin Peaks score. Tiziana Wells sings with pure emotion, hypnotic at times, upbeat and carefree at others. Frankie Teardrop (of the Wierd party and the Systems of Romance blog) describes this album as 'possibly the closest thing to darkwave freestyle that exists'. We decided to expand the album, releasing it as a deluxe double LP cut louder at 45rpm. An unreleased extended version of "Ice Of Fire" has been included and the bonus track "Intro", found on the DAT tapes Fabrizio Chiari sent us. It is housed in the original jacket, featuring a dramatically lit photograph of the band by Andrea Gambetta. Each copy includes an 11x11 double-sided insert with photos of the band, lyrics, and liner notes by Intergalactic Gary, who's Despair Mix turned us onto to this album.

cockerill-sombre / 12"

The Neon Judgement hail from the small town of Leuven near Brussels, Belgium and gave birth to the new-beat and EBM scenes worldwide with the release of their 1st 2 cassettes 'Suffering' (1981) and 'TV Treated' (1982). Always a consistent duo of Dirk Da Davo (synthesizers, vocals) and TB Frank (guitar, drum machine, vocals), The Neon Judgment worked in a parallel world alongside Suicide, Cabaret Voltaire, and the Deutsche Neue Welle. In 1983 they released the infamous 4-song 'Cockerill-Sombre' ep containing the dancefloor smash "The Fashion Party" on Anything But Records. Dirk Da Davo says, 'First we recorded and mixed the drum parts and effects on 4-track, then we bounced this mix to 2 tracks again what left us with 2 more channels to use for vocals and additional instruments'. Veering between minimalistic industrial drones, odd new-wave-ish synth-pop and dance music, underlain by cold, mechanical rhythms. The band combine brash and seedy lyrics, with raw synthesizer stabs and repetitive drum machine beats both aggressive and danceable. 'Cockerill-Sombre' was recorded in a small basement room under the watchful eyes of Ludo Camerberlin from A Blaze Colour. Housed in the original jacket featuring a black and white photo of the duo performing live. Each copy includes a 2-sided 11" square insert with photos of the band, lyrics, and liner notes by Dirk Da Davo.

Silvia is the name of a Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW 'New German Wave') project created Tommi Stumpff & Silvia Nemanic. The pair met in Düsseldorf in the late 70's and started dating when Tommi was the singer of punk band Der KFC. Silvia was absolutely inexperienced in musical things, she said 'I've played the recorder'. Tommi rented Klangwerkstatt studio for a few days in January 1982 to record his an album with his bandmate Ferdinand Mackenthun aka Käpt'n Nuss of Der KFC, but finished earlier than expected. With one extra day that was already paid for, they quickly wrote some more songs and recorded them. All they needed was a singer, so they asked Silvia. Simply titled 'Silvia', the record was released in mid-1982 on cult label Schallmauer Records, which had released many German punk, NDW and new-wave records in the 80's. Tommi and Käpt'n Nuss played all instruments and wrote the lyrics. Since Silvia had a very deep voice, Tommi slightly pitched up her vocals to sound higher on the recordings. The album displays Tommi's transition from punk rock to cold electronics, EBM and eventually techno. Tommi's instrument set up was a Sequential Circuits Pro One and Moog Prodigy controlled by a Fricke sequencer and a Korg SQ-10 Analog Sequencer. Silvia urges the listener to save themselves and says 'No miracle will happen you die tomorrow, young and guilty' evoking the urban Zeitgeist of the Cold War. Housed in the original jacket featuring a full color of Silvia on the front with hand drawn magenta type. Each copy includes a replica insert of the original lyrics sheet in German and a postcard featuring a black and white photo of Tommi and Silvia. Sadly Silvia passed away in 2003 and this reissue is dedicated to her.

susan sleepwalking / 12"

The Arms Of Someone New was formed in 1983 in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois by Mel Eberle and Steve Jones. Steve managed and helped record Mel's band The First Things; while in the studio to demo some of Mel's songs, they started collaborating. Both grew up around their families' pianos and got into psychedelic rock drawing inspiration from Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles, taking their name 'The Arms Of Someone New' from a line on a Beatle's X-Mas Fan Club Single. They modeled their sound after the melancholic side of Factory Records, The Cure's 'Faith' period and The Teardrop Explodes. Between 1983 and 1985 they released 4 cassettes, one 7", and one 12" ep. In september 1985, the duo self-released their debut full length 'Susan Sleepwalking' on Office Records. To They drafted locals for the album's recordings, including Lynn Canfield, Henry Frayne, Brenden Gamble and Joe Strell (all of the group Ack-Ack!) as well as Nick Rudd. Equipped with Casio keyboards, drum machines, and jangly guitars, The Arms Of Someone New provided an American take on English folk, ambient, and industrial music. Over the album's 10 tracks they paint pictures of stillness with sparse instrumentation and simple chord change. Psychedelic vocals add a dream-like veneer. The Arms of Someone New fearlessly mix genres without sacrificing the unity of their vision. 'Susan Sleepwalking' could as well be retitled 'Music For Interiors' (both architectural and of the mind - The Michigan Daily 1985). Housed in the original jacket featuring a blood red-tinted photograph with ghostly textures. Each copy includes a 2-sided 11" square insert with lyrics and press clippings from the band's archive.

sound of danger / LP

Espen Beranek Holm is a Norwegian musician and comedian, born 1960 and began his music career as a clarinetist. Inspired by early synthesizer bands Kraftwerk and The Residents, he began making experimental pop music. His debut single "Dra Te' Hćlvete" was released in 1981 and was immediately banned by national TV/radio channel NRK due to explicit lyrics. This gave the young artist tons of publicity, helping the single spend almost 6 months on the national charts. Beranek returned to the Starholm Studios in Oslo from june to september 1981 to record 9 new compositions. His debut album, 'Sound Of Danger', was released on Mind Expanding Records in november 1981. Nowhere near as accessible as the previous single, the album fared poorly commercially. Withdrawing from the single's fun, kitsch pop, the album is cool and static, driven by thin rhythm boxes, cold synths and glacial guitars. Taking heavy cues from David Bowie, all of the songs are sung in a nasally English accent, a rare occurrence in Norway at the time. The lyrics are melancholic, but tinged with paranoia. There are also upbeat tracks that evoke a prog or glam sensibility a la King Crimson, Alan Parsons, or Roxy Music. Housed in the original jacket featuring red, black and white lines that evoke a visualized Richter Scale designed by Monica Moltzau. Each copy includes a 2-sided 8x11" insert with lyrics and an autographed press photo of Beranek.

transdance / 12"

All 4 mixes of "Transdance" by Night Moves as a tribute dedicated to the lives lost in the Oakland Ghost Ship fire on December 2, 2016. Night Moves was the brainchild of Michael Guihen, from South London. Inspired by seeing Tubeway Army perform on Top of the Pops in 1979 he placed an add to form a synth-based band in the NME. In November 1980 he was introduced to Denis Haines, formerly Gary Numan's keyboardist on the 'Telekon' album. Denis and Michael worked closely together, writing a number of backing tracks. One of these was the farewell song from Gary Numan to his band Tubeway Army, "Love Needs No Disguise". In exchange for this backing track, Denis gave Michael the studio time needed to develop "Transdance". The 1st version of "Transdance" was recorded in late Spring 1981 at Ridge Farm Studio in Surrey and within the week Michael had a recording deal with GC Recordings. This mix of "Transdance" was pressed onto a white label GC1 and was sent to clubs around Britain and Europe. In Summer 1981 he met John Davis (aka John Darc) also part West London's new romantic scene. They recorded the 2nd mix of "Transdance" at Matrix Studios in London early 1982, and John added the new bass line. This was titled 'U.K. Disco Mix' and released by GC Records. On this mix the backing vocals were sung by Eve Goddard, Adam Ant's ex-wife. In March 1983 Michael and John turned to New York's budding electro & hip-hop scenes to have Jay Burnett remix the 'New York Disco Mix'. Back in London, the duo disappeared into the cutting rooms at Utopia studios with Francis Usmar and emerged with the final dub edit 'Robot Rock'. All 3 later mixes were programmed with a Roland TR-808, some live drums, and one homemade handclap machine. "Transdance" was embraced by Chicago's WBMX, Hot Mix 5 and Ron Hardy as well in New York at Larry Levan's Paradise Garage and Tony Humphries' Club Zanzibar in New Jersey. It is considered a blueprint that traces the line from UK synth-pop to Chicago house and Detroit techno. Housed in the original jacket featuring a black and white photograph of 2 mannequins dancing set against a cantaloupe hue. Each copy includes a 2-sided 11" square insert with lyrics and drawings of all 36 victims of the Oakland Ghost Ship fire. Also included is a 6 page booklet with liner notes, original press kit sheets and photographs from the band's archive. 100% of all profits will be donated to the Oakland Fire Immediate Relief Fund.

After a series of demos and live performances, the duo recruited Angelo Bergamini of Kirlian Camera to help with arrangement and synthesizers. In September 1984 they booked a recording time at Master Studio 33 in Cremona Italy. Working with produced Ray Masola, they recorded their debut single "Eyes Of Glass", which was released on No Comment in early 1985. The equipment set up was a PPG Wave 2, Roland ProMars, Roland Juno 60, Simmons drum, and an upright piano. "Eyes Of Glass" is an outstanding example of 80's italo-disco full of dark, moody atmosphere and depth. Wilma Notari's coy vocals cast a spell on the listener as she weaves a story about lost love and 'bitter tears'. Included here are the original extended 12" mix and instrumental version with mid-song breakdown and dubbed out chorus. Housed in the original jacket featuring a photo of a boy by Pushe 27. Each copy includes a 2-sided postcard with photos of the band, lyrics, and liner notes by Flemming Dalum.
