Artist : Doris Norton

Label : Mannequin

personal computer / LP

34th anniversary reissue edition ! Doris Norton was Apple's 1st music "endorsement" and Roland affiliate, and is one of the most important female pioneers in the use of synths and in the early electro computer music field. 'Personal Computer' showcases some computer game-style workouts along with some really canny cuts in the tricksy metrics of "Caution Radiation Norton" and the psychedelic wig-out "A.D.A. Converter".. In 1980, Norton began her solo career by recording at Fontana Studio 7, the Milan studio of the composer and musician Tito Fontana, resulting in the electronic opera 'Under Ground'. Norton became more prolific, continuing her adventures in experimental electronics and computer music with 'Parapsycho' (1981), 'Raptus' (1981), 'Nortoncomputerforpeace' (1983), 'PC' (1984) (whose album cover prominently features Apple's colored logo) and 'Artificial Intelligence' (1985). While the beat-oriented style of Norton's music aligns her with such global fellow-travelers as Yellow Magic Orchestra and Kraftwerk, her championing of the personal computer as a tool for self-sufficient musical creativity also connects her to more artsy musicians such as Pietro Grossi, Laurie Spiegel and the League Of Automatic Music Composers. Norton's predilection for the bright, glossy timbres of early digital instruments also recalls Hubert Bognermayr and Harald Zuschrader's bizarre 1982 one-off Erdenklang. Later, her talent and expertise attracted the attention of IBM, who in 1986 named her as an official consultant. Already the reigning queen of the Italian electronic scene, she recorded 2 CDs for IBM: 'Automatic Feeling' and 'The Double Side Of The Science'. Influenced by her son, the musician and producer Rexanthony, Norton brought her fascination with the early days of techno into the 90's, when she released 3 volumes of 'Techno Shock' on Italian trance/hardcore label Sound Of The Bomb. While her music remains largely out of print and inaccessible, Norton's early records have recently begun to receive the inevitable rediscovery treatment.

nortoncomputerforpeace / LP

35th anniversary reissue edition ! Doris Norton was Apple's 1st music "endorsement" and Roland affiliate, and is one of the most important female pioneers in the use of synths and in the early electro computer music field. This 3rd album of experimental computer works is anther peach, and includes the beautifully lush 10 minute medieval/prog regression "Don't Shoot At Animals" and the whirling psychedelia of "Iran No Ra".. As a teenager, Norton was drawn to medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music, not to mention quantum physics, differential equations, organic chemistry, the experimentalism of John Cage and animated movie soundtracks. Her love for modules and circuits found expression through the waves of an old harmonium, the frequencies of a Minimoog, a Roland System 100M, a Roland System 700 and the ARP 2500/2600. 3rd studio album, 'Nortoncomputerforpeace' involved Doris Norton, Antonius Rex and Rudy Luksch (hardware engineer). "Don't Shoot At Animals" was used as original soundtrack for the RAI tv program 'Rumore Di Fondo' directed by Umberto Marino.

Artist : Group A

Label : Mannequin

untitled / 12"

Berlin-based, Japanese industrial synth duo Group A's debut on Mannequin Records. Tommi Tokyo & Sayaka Botanic play pinball on your synapses with the body-sparking metal dance jabs of their eponymous debut as Group A for Mannequin. Over the last few years the duo have built up cult acclaim thru a tight handful of self-released CDrs and tapes and their incendiary live shows in Tokyo and more recently Berlin, which they now call home, bringing them to their 1st record proper. A-side is given to the zinging bullet train momentum of "T.O.P.", where they hammer out a martial tattoo of drum machines, shark-toothed 16th note arpeggios and robotic vocals which, rather brilliantly, work at the intended 45rpm for brisk pacing, or at 33rpm +8, if you're that way inclined. Think Factory Floor meet radioactive buttplugs. B-side, they channel that energy into something like a distant, numbed echo of The Neon Judgement's 'The Fashion Party' with illegible vocals delivered by an 8-bit gremlin, then trap your swede in a maze of psychotomimetic delays to emulate the most intense nitrous buzz of yer lyf.

tapes

Artist : Alessandro Adriani

Label : Mannequin

tapes / 12"

Mannequin's boss Alessandro Adriani has certainly stepped out from the shadows from his retrospective leaning label to create some brilliant modern EBM/industrial derivatives, that still give a respectful nod to their origins. For his newest release, he presents us with some fairly fierce offerings. "A Man Who Would Come Here Of His Own Free Will" is tough, acid-infused EBM that lunges for right he jugular. A does "He Is Everything And Nothing", the kind of techno-punk that's reminiscent of past work with Douglas Lee as An-I: could it possibly be him on vocals? Finally on the flip, the brooding darkwave of "You Never Sleep" features lovably cheesy 80's synth leads and Silent Servant style howls through walls of delay and distortion. You can just imagine PVC clad goths sweating it out to this one, in basements from Berlin to L.A.

dédales / LP

Montréal synth-pop band Police Des Mśurs is one of the finest and rawest bands in the minimal-synth and coldwave scene. 'Dédales' their 3rd LP, is keeping the pure energy of their previous efforts while leaving greater room for atmospheric and textural considerations. The album will lead you into the passage zone between civilisation and wilderness, a mysterious place where truth, lies, light and darkness collide. dust on common

Artist : Led Er Est

Label : Mannequin

dust on common / LP

2017 reissue of one the best minimal-synth / coldwave albums of the past 15 years. 'Dust On Common' from Led Er Est (aka Sam De La Osa, Shawn O'Sullivan & Owen Hutchinson) was originally released in 2009 by the seminal Brooklyn based record label Wierd Records. The band's 1st LP showed the 3 pieces clearly breaking out the minimal-synth underground they have been a vitally integral part of since its inception in Brooklyn to create an undeniably contemporary set of highly crafted and restrained, icily psychedelic pop songs.

take suicide

13.29€

Artist : Flo & Andrew

Label : Mannequin

take suicide / 12"

One of the holy grail of the minimal-synth and one of the most obscure musical projects ever produced in Italy. Finally reissued on Mannequin Records. Originally released in 1981 by Broadbean Records, a sub-label of LM Records, Flo & Andrew's only release 'Take Suicide' was home-recorded and home-mixed by the duo in Bologna, using early drum machines, analog synthesizers, guitar, saxophone, tape loops. Flo & Andrew's music is truly unique and exemplifies the fact that limitation can be the perfect source for creativity. The title-track "To Committ Suicide" travel through contort and nervous synth sounds and loops, taking somehow inspiration from the no-wave heroes, while "Japanese Girls" is nothing less than a beautiful minimal electronics track in the mythology of the futuristic rise of Japanse country. Recently (re)discovered, 'Take Suicide' is a milestone of the european minimal-synth singles and is not really a coincidence that a young generation of producers take it as inspiration. Another must have in your collection ! (Black vinyl)
